Not a tawdry thread, but fluff I guess...

I read to my little boy every night - and there are some books that have become our favorites. There is one book that I absolutely love - "Knots on a Counting Rope" by Bill Martin. It's a good lesson in life, and the relationship between the little boy and his grandfather always brings tears to my eyes.

"Guess How Much I Love You" is another favorite - just love Nutbrown Hare!

What children's books are special to you?

WGM:

I meant to add, good for you! Kids who are read to regularly grow up to be the best readers. Fill your son's life with books, books, and more books.

Those are all wonderful books, prof!

My poor child doesn't stand a chance LOL - I have a degree in English, so he doesn't have a choice!

Actually, I started reading aloud to him when I was pregnant; I took a boook with me to the hospital the night he was born, and read to him when he was less than 2 hours old.

I can't even begin to count how many books we have read so far - he just turned 6 - but we read often. When he was just 4 years old, he knew "Are You My Mother?" by heart. And "The Little Engine that Could" - he has that one memorized as well. He is a train fanatic, and has quite a few train books...so every night is a give-and-take - we read one train book and one story book

I forgot to add the reason I am particularly fond of "Knots on a Counting Rope"...

I think grandparents are such an integral part of growing up. Both sets of my grandparents had passed before I was born, so I never knew them. My parents live in the same town, so my little boy sees them daily.

Life is too short, but memories stay with us forever

That's great, wgm.

I did the same with great success. I didn't start in the hospital but I've read many books to infants. LOL... It's one of the best things that a parent can do.

wgm - I agree, reading to children encougages them to develop the love for reading themselves.

On the grandparents subject, I had the BEST grandparents in the world. I visited each summer as soon as school was out and didn't return until the day before school started. Visited during some winter vacations too. They were farmers and what I learned from those experiences was wonderful. Plus....grandparents give unconditional love...you [almost] can do no wrong...and they spoil you.

I can clearly remember back when I was in pre-school, the teacher read a book called "Tikki-Tikki-Tembo," a chinese folktale about why Chinese names are so short. The character's name was Tikki-tikki-tembo-no-sa-rembo-chari-bari-ruchi-pip-pari-pembo and I thought it was the funniest thing I ever heard. If you can find this book get it!

helen - it is the best things a parent can do...I picture you as the type of person that would read to a child

Linda - you are certainly blessed to have those memories!!! Although I don't, my little boy will - and you are right about spoiling!

dad - I will have to look for that book

auctionguy - I LOVE that story! We have it and it is so fun to read!

You know, when my little guy was born my best friend gave me a card that read "whenever a child is born, so is a parent" - and that is so true. I learn a lot of things all over again...things that we all seem to forget in the rush of everything around us.

Thank you for sharing on this thread
