Is it just me or is this story about trade deficits (which we ALL know will never be balanced) not job restoration.

Bush Vows to Help Restore Lost Manufacturing Jobs
By Steve Holland
RICHFIELD, Ohio (Reuters) - Feeling political heat over lost manufacturing jobs, President Bush (news - web sites) marked Labor Day on Monday with the promise he will work to ensure nations attracting U.S. factories overseas have fair trade policies.
About 2.5 million of the 3 million U.S. jobs lost since Bush took office in January 2001 have been in the manufacturing sector, and Democrats hoping to unseat him in the 2004 election are using that to say Bush has been a failed steward of the U.S. economy.
Acknowledging that "there's a problem with the manufacturing sector," Bush said he had directed Commerce Secretary Don Evans to appoint an assistant secretary of commerce to focus exclusively on the needs of manufacturers.
"One way to make sure the manufacturing sector does well is to send the message overseas ... We expect there to be a fair playing field when it comes to trade. See, we in America believe we can compete with anybody just so long as the rules are fair, and we intend to keep the rules fair," he said.

This is interesting. How will the administration force overseas employers to pay higher wages, benefits, and taxes ?

Tarrifs cause retaliatory tarrifs. And tarrifs are what ran the world into a depression in the 1930s.
Wages, benefits, and taxes, can not be reasons to affix tarrifs either. Tarrifs are warranted only if a government subsidizes or provides unfair treatment for market goods.
Low wages, benefits and taxes do not reach the tarrif question, and never have.

So, let's see...we're going to force manufacturers in foreign countries to pay higher wages, thereby reducing the incentive for moving factories out of the US. In other words, we're going to make OUR problem, somebody else's. Yeah, that should work .

Bringing our standard of living down to theirs is not a solution either.... besides why not have them raise their standards?

Twelve - do you really believe this crap that you spew? I mean SERIOUSLY... do you really believe that they US has the right to dictate labor standards to other nations or that we are going to become a third world nation if we don't?

Well it would be hard to explain to someone who plans on moving to Mexico to do some exploitation of their own... but yes the US should make them start to bring their standard of living up if they want to do business...
There are many ways to do it... one is just require that wages of foreign employees must now, at a minimum, match those in the US for the same type of work or the duty on that product will be high enough that a manufacturer here will be competitive.
We need to stop "rewarding" those that leave the country with jobs, but try to come back with goods...

Once again you have not a clue what you are talking about Twelve. I am not planning to exploit anyone. In fact it is exactly the opposite. My intentions are to help smaller artisans and manufacturers to increase their distribution onto an international field, increasing their sales and profits by expanding their market. You know, that other concept you fear.....foreign manufacturers selling directly to American suppliers and retailers.
In other words, while I would profit from my knowledge and skills, the only person that would profit from THEIR labor and skills is them. BY assisting them in increasing their profit levels I assist them in raising their standard of living.

Well I stand corrected... I will gladly applaud you if you do bring their standard of living up... however you are correct, I do not like the importing of cheap foreign products at this time.
