A number of possiblities:

- a scammer got hold of your email address and is sending out email in your name. If it fails to be delivered, it comes back to you

- the recent worms that hit the internet go through people's address books. then they send email to everyone on the address book using one of the IDs they found. So if you are in someone else's address book and he got hit, your name could be used to send out the email.

It is the email of the So.Big worm. Your email address is being used as its "spoof address" so all returned mail goes to you.

news item about it today...

Just when it looked safe to go back into the Internet waters, the SoBig worm, called the fastest spreading virus ever, clogged the Internet this week, filling e-mail inboxes and slowing networks.

The worm causes computers to send out additional copies of itself to other users as e-mail attachments, making it a convergence of two of the worst aspects of the Internet spam and virus software.

"SoBig is a pain in the neck," said Mark Soresi, director of operations for the Maryland division of computer service technicians Geeks On Call Inc. in Potomac. "I'm looking at one out of every four or five e-mails in my inbox has a SoBig attachment."

While anti-virus security software blocked the infection from spreading to his computer, the additional amount of e-mails did slow Soresi's machine.

"It's a wildfire spread, as they refer to it," Soresi said. "Some programmer is in love with it."

"I got about 150 [infected] e-mails on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday because of that bugger," said Kasra Ghanbari, president of Gaithersburg biotechnology startup Panacea Pharmaceuticals Inc. "Our network guy came in yesterday and things have slowed down quite a bit."
