We are becoming over-populated and resources are being taxed. Obviously, birth control education doesn't work. What now?

Who's we?? The world, the US or Canada?

Without having looked at the latest stats, I don't know what country might be 'over-populating' the most. Do you?

Obviously, birth control education doesn't work. What now? Guess we're just going to have to live with it. And as gravid said, [I believe it was him] some illness might come along and kill of millions of people.

The world. One good thing, is that teenage pregnancy is down in the U.S., so birth control education is working with you guys, but the rest of the world is out of control. It's too bad people are too stupid to associate sex with pregnancy and that it will take a mass plague or something to control things.

Krafty - well as long as the Catholic church keeps demouncing all forms of birth control there will be overcrowding. Of course their pronouncement that condoms are not effective in reducing the spread of AIDs will possibly counteract part of that.

Linda, I think that Gravid and I have both presented the possibility that there are diseases that seem to present themselves spontaiously in over populated areas. Personally I think it is mother nature fighting back. Viruses such as AIDs, Ebola and to some extent SARS generally present themselves initially in areas where the natural resoures are being stripped and destroyed by over population. Modern technology and ease of travel however has made the spread of the diseases much more widespread than perhaps originally intended. I think that in that sense Ebola is nearly the perfect virus, quick acting, quick death, and seems to disappear from the radar as quickly as it appears.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Surely you're not trying to blame the world's population ONLY on the Catholic's are you? lol
Is all of Africa, etc Catholic? Most Catholic's in the US don't follow what Rome sets as standards anyway. Their parish priests tell them to follow their own hearts on practicing birth control.

Well...part of that statement they've made is true. Condoms have one of the lowest % of preventing pregnancy. And it's within reason to think that if one can get pregnant using a condom, one can also get AIDS/HIV.

Okay....more than willing to give credit where credit is due. You and gravid said......

Here's an interesting site. Not only does it address in which countries populations are growing and those declining, but the site's sidebar has interesting subjects too.

Of course.. it's all fault of those crazy catholics.... No just kidding. Of course not, just saying that the Pope is not helping much. The past year or so has not been his best in terms of dealing with the realities of todays world.

The link was interesting, although the news about Africa is not surprising. I would not be surprised to hear about more outbreaks of ebola of a new similar strain there in the coming years.

On the sixth day God turned to the Archangel Gabriel and said: "Today I am going to create a land called Canada. It will be a land of outstanding natural beauty. It shall have tall majestic mountains full of bears and eagles, beautifully sparkling lakes bountiful with trout, forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs overlooking sandy beaches with an abundance of sea life, and rivers stocked with salmon." God continued, "I shall make the land rich in oil so that the inhabitants will prosper. I shall call these inhabitants "Canadians", and they shall be known as the most friendly people on the earth."

"But Lord," asked Gabriel, "don't you think you are being too generous to these Canadians?"

"Not really," replied God. "Just wait and see the neighbors I'm going to give them.

The following is allegedly the transcript of a radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995, as released by the Chief of Naval Operations:

Canadians: Please divert your course 15 degrees the South to avoid a collision.

Americans: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, I SAY AGAIN, THAT'S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

fenix -

What I found more interesting than the original article were those on the side of it.

It appears we're [the world] never going to get this right.

Like the one that says Australia has the smallest growth rate....they worked to reverse it downward...now they're paying 'baby bonuses' to bring the population back up.

And Iran clerics are trying to curb the baby boom they once were promoting.

Egypt claims if their population continues at it's present rate, there won't be enough bread for all to eat in 10 years.

Then another article tells us that the population in the Middle East will double by 2050.

In the 'two child policy will not work' article it says:

She added that UNFPA, working with religious organisations, found that many people, who continued childbearing because they wanted male children, had started to respect the needs of women and the value of the girl-child.

"Religious values that are pro-women and pro-girl child need to be propagated and imbibed in the society," she said. Obaid added that the Indian Government should encourage such campaigns, as they would help reduce the number of people opting for female infanticide and sex selective abortion.

Reason I highlighted that part is because I have been repeatedly challenged when I have stated that when women from certain countries [and it's not limited to Indian women] come to our country if they become pregnant with a female they want to terminate the pregnancy only for that reason. I use this to support what I've said in the past. This article shows they recognize it and are working to change it. Which is a GREAT thing, imo.

And of course there is also China. Even with AIDS/HIV countries like Africa are still growing in population.
