non political

I searched and searched, looked through my grandmothers recipe file, and these are not there, and I don't know the names of a couple

'Snowball' or Russian Wedding cookies, they are the round, with powdered sugar, and I think just pecans inside

the one where you put the hersheys kiss on it, and it is a peanut butter cookie (I think!)

AND, I learned this one in OK and TX, I think they are called Ice box cookies, but the ones I found on the internet have brown sugar and LOTS of shortening... now I don't quite remember the shortening, but I KNOW they didn't have brown sugar. And they were NO bake, but I know you had to cook the chocolate on the stove...

Did any of those ring a bell? those Ice box cookies I know are a big thing in the South I believe, and I know there are probably variations. I haven't made them since I left there, and that was a very long time ago

Anyone???

Wish I could help you - I even tried to call my mother because she usually sends me a tin of the powdered sugar rolled pecan cookies but she is MIA. I have a beef with her anyway. I didn't get any cookies this year including her super secret Currant Cookies which she refuses to give me the recipe for. Christmas is the only time of year she ever makes them and she didn't send me any? There is going to be war!

NTS - do these look familiar?

SNOWBALLS

1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup chopped pecans
additional powdered sugar

Cream butter, sugar and vanilla until fully mixed. Add flour with salt to creamed mixture, blend throughly. Add nuts and mix well. Chill dough for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 400F. Shape into 1-inch balls and bake 8-10 minutes. Do not brown. Cool, then roll in powdered sugar.

PEANUT BUTTER KISSES

18 oz. jar creamy peanut butter
1 1/4 c. sugar
2 lg. eggs
"Hershey" kisses

Mix ingredients. Drop by teaspoon onto ungreased sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Immediately after removing cookie from oven, put a Hershey kiss in the middle of the peanut butter ball. Cool.

I've got the recipe for the 'snow ball' cookies. But they're made with butter and powdered sugar and pecans only. Nothing else....although I guess you could add whatever you want to them. But yuck...why ruin a great cookie?

I'll go see if I can find which cookbook I've stuck it in. bbl

Thanks Linda : ) - none of those are like hers but the lemon one sounds really good!

Completely off topic but the currents reminded me of this - does anyone know when champagne grapes (Teeny tiny tart currant sized grapes) are in season? The grocery store near me in LA used to get them and the one here has promised to try to find them for me but I have no ideas when they are in season. RIght now I am wallowing in the joys of pomegranate season.

wow! thanks!

fenix, I don't know when champagne grapes are in season... sorry, I'm sure someone here should..... a war on cookie recipes?

wgm, Thats the one! Thank you! Linda, though, you don't use flour?

and wgm, on the peanut butter kisses one, there is no flour in that recipe either, just creamed peanut butter, sugar and eggs... but that one sounds easy though, I like easy!

Linda, I looked... wow... some of the bars look great!!! I think I would like the cheesecake brownies or the 'congo bars'
and I need 'visual aid' here, so the pictures were great!

Thanks all... now to get all the ingredients....

(plus MIL will be on Sunday night, so I have her to MYSELF for a few days, oh boy and Mike told me she loves to make cookies, thats when she's not flying off to exotic places! I am so jealous of her! So its cookie making, cuz I'm all shopped out!!!!!!)

Thanks you guys, and are you all baking too?

Ok that was weird... I hit a wrong key, and poof there went my post, unless it sneaks in here later!

Ok OT from cookies

Ok I don't remember the name (yeah I'm bad today! ) but my mother used to make these every Christmas, and thinking now, they are so cool. You take a whole orange, and cover it with whole cloves, and hang them.
But have you priced whole cloves? woaw!

But, I can't remember the name, or anything today for that matter!

Linda, those cookies look yummy!

NTS - I never use recipes that call for flour for peanut butter cookies - too starchy for me I guess. The ones without flour are wonderful, and bake pretty much the same way as the ones with flour. Must be the carbs in the peanut butter LOL

On the refrigerator cookies, the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are the ones you cook on the stove - with cocoa, oatmeal, and peanut butter (and some other ingredients) - is this what you are talking about? If it is, I have the recipe...

I am doing some baking, but mostly mine and my little boy's three favorites this year...peanut butter fudge, buckeyes (chocolate covered peanut butter balls) and Chex party mix If I have enough time, I will make some Haystacks too - love those!

I wish all of you a very beautiful Christmas, filled with much love and happiness extending well beyond the holiday. You give so much and it's only fair that you get it back in return - I have really enjoyed posting with yall, and look forward to more happy times

wgm, YES, thats the one, oatmeal, cocoa, peanut butter, -icebox cookies is what they called them down in TX!

I found Haystacks too! LOL, I loved those, my mom didn't make them, but a friends mom did, and they were sooo good!

My mother was so into Christmas, that she started baking at the end of Oct. and froze everything in a deep freeze downstairs.. well, we knew, we took 'em, then they got a deep freeze with a lock on it... it was never MY idea, it was always my brother, he sure was a bad influence!

And Merry Christmas to all of you!!! though I'll be around, as long as I can... I should be doing all this other stuff, but got sidetracked

NTS - Linda, though, you don't use flour? Yes, I use flour too. [brain fart, I guess]

No...no baking for me this year either. I'll get back into the swing of things next year, I hope.

My MIL LOVES haystacks. Think I'll make her some for Valentine's Day.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone shared. I wish the same to all of you ...and your loved ones too.

Merry Christmas!!!

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=champagne+grapes+currants

On some of the links you can purchase currants online and have them delivered. I believe one link said they're grown August throught December. So better hurry..

Sounds like "Russian Tea Cakes" to me. Here are a couple of recipes:

1 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup chopped walnuts
1/3 cup confectioners' sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
In a medium bowl, cream butter and vanilla until smooth. Combine the 6 tablespoons confectioners' sugar and flour; stir into the butter mixture until just blended. Mix in the chopped walnuts. Roll dough into 1 inch balls, and place them 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake for 12 minutes in the preheated oven. When cool, roll in remaining confectioners' sugar.

----------------

2 cups butter
1 cup confectioner's sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
4 1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour
1 cup ground walnuts
Extra confectioners' sugar

Beat the butter with 1 cup confectioners' sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in the vanilla and salt. Gradually blend in the flour and walnuts to make a stiff dough. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls between the palms of your hands and place 1 inch apart on a greased cookie sheet. Bake in a 400° oven for 12 minutes or until firm and lightly brown on the edges. Roll, while hot, in the extra 10X sugar. Cool on wire racks and roll again in the confectioners' sugar.

Linda- the funniest part of that link is that I had no idea that curreants originated from champagne grapes. Thanks for the link : )

wgm! thats it! thats the one! I copied it. When my kids were real small, they loved these!

Bunnicula, yeah, Mike told me and I *thought* he had said Russian Wedding something, but thats it, Russian Tea Cakes! I like them, and they do look so 'Christmasy'

Linda, I can understand that, not into baking this year, but you will be spending it with your granddaughter, right, so it should be a nice time

Whew, I was cleaning the carpet in the 'guest room' ugh.... for Mikes mom. Now I have a TON of laundry to do, and finish cleaning in 2 days, and this is the biggest house we've lived in... argh... sometime... I can't wait for the holidays to be over.
but hey I love Christmas

Thanks all, and Happy Holidays!!!!
