LOS ANGELES (AP) - Isabel Sanford, best known as Louise Jefferson or "Weezie" on the CBS sitcom "The Jeffersons," moved on up to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Sanford, 86, was joined at the ceremony Thursday by about 300 fans, family members and friends, including "All in the Family" and "Jeffersons" creator Norman Lear and Marla Gibbs, who played the Jeffersons' maid Florence.
Sanford, a native New Yorker, said she was honored to have her own star.

"Here with stars in my eyes - something that I dreamed about when I was 9 years old," she said after the ceremony. "There are others that deserve it, but let everybody get their own."

Sanford made her feature film debut in the classic "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," before co-starring with Sherman Hemsley for more than 10 years in "The Jeffersons," a spin-off of the popular series "All in the Family."

In 1981, Sanford became the first black woman to receive an Emmy for best actress in a comedy series.

Hemsley was out of the state and couldn't attend his TV wife's ceremony, officials said, but Gibbs couldn't pass up watching her friend receive the star.

"I am so happy to be here to represent the queen," Gibbs said. "She is such a generous star."

Sanford's star, No. 2,245, is on Hollywood Boulevard near La Brea Avenue only a few away from the star honoring Carroll O'Connor of "All in the Family."

I always wondered who decides who gets a star and who doesn't. Anyone know?

Fans nominate their favorite celebrity. The committee meets once a year and votes on the nominees--20 get voted in each year. But: it then costs the recipient (or his/her nominating fans) $15,000 to get the star. The nominee has 5 years to schedule their ceremony.

Every June, a five-person committee chaired by Johnny Grant, the honorary mayor of Hollywood, meets to consider the approximately 200 applications that roll in annually. The committee selects around 20 honorees from the batch, including one posthumous recipient per year. The applicants' sponsors must then pony up $15,000 each to pay for the unveiling ceremony—no cash, no star, regardless of the person's artistic achievements. The fee is usually picked up by the celebrity's studio or record label, though fan clubs sometimes pass the hat to raise enough money. Aficionados of 1980s rocker Rick Springfield, for example, have collected $19,607.56 to pay for their hero's enshrinement on the walk. (The committee, alas, has yet to grant the "Jessie's Girl" singer a star.)

kinda confusing if ya ask me

Cotton Swabs - Leo Gerstenzang and Q-tips

Cotton swabs or Q-Tips ® were invented in 1923 by a Polish-born American named Leo Gerstenzang who founded the Leo Gerstenzang Infant Novelty Company to market his new invention. Q-tips was not the first name Gertenzang used, Baby Gays was. In 1926, Baby Gays was expanded to Q-Tips Baby Gays, and later the Baby Gays part of the name was dropped. The Q in Q tip stands for quality, and tips refers to the cotton ends.

Here ya go, Profe:

"Q-TIPS"

The Q-tip was invented in the 1920's Leo Gerstenzang (a Polish-born American). His wife had used a toothpick with cotton stuck on the end to clean their baby's ears, and Leo invented Q-tips to replace her jury-rigged invention. Gerstenzang's original Q-tips consisted of a wooden stick swathed in cotton at both ends; much later, the wood was replaced by white cardboard. Gerstenzang started the Infant Novelty Company to sell Q-tips (which he then called Baby Gays); in 1926, he changed the name of his product to Q-Tips® Baby Gays. The Q stood for "quality". Eventually, the name changed to Q-tips. Doctors today advise that you should not use Q-tips to clean inside your ears. Q-tip, however, have many other uses, including cleaning small areas (like jewelry or the space between computer keys), applying glue, spreading paint, etc.

Thanks!....I wonder if maybe they should reconsider on the name...there might be a great niche market these days for "Baby Gays"
