LOS ANGELES (AP) - A federal judge has thrown out a section of the USA Patriot Act that bars giving expert advice or assistance to groups designated as foreign terrorist organizations.
The case before the court involved five groups and two U.S. citizens seeking to provide support for lawful, nonviolent activities on behalf of Kurdish refugees in Turkey.

What I don't get is why the entire Patriot Act hasn't been thrown out by a sitting judge with even a modicum of respect for the U.S. Constitution. There *is* a case pending in Detroit, brought by the ACLU, which seeks to overturn provisions (of the Act) that allow the government wide latitude to seize records, books and papers in investigations of international terrorism.

Am I just too stupid to realize that this is the quiet way in which our guvmint will back off of the Patriot Act -- by hearing seemingly unrelated (to our own terrorist concerns) cases and bit by bit nodding and winking at judges to carve it up in obscure court proceedings that barely get a fifth-page paragraph in the newspapers?
