i am watching a pretty plump woman now on tv,i am wondering if we should all worry less on calories and just be happy we have more to offer.
fat people have less wrinkles, fat people are better nature, fat people are easy going, fat people wear loose clothes and can put away more.
fat people get a better deal as they pay the same price for their clothes.
not to mention,EATING WELL IS THE BEST REVENGE.
comments please.

I don't know if it's available in anything but PAL video form, but British comedienne Dawn French, who is a large woman, produced a one-hour show a few years ago called "Dawn French on Fat" that is worth viewing.

Her life itself is one of success; some of you may recognize her as half of the acclaimed comedy team, French & Saunders ( - Jennifer Saunders of Absolutely Fabulous) ; the wife of British stand-up comedian Lenny Henry; or even the Vicar of Dibley.

She never let size dictate her "place" in society and actually has used her substantial physical presence to its best advantage. I always admired Jackie Gleason for having done the same thing.

More likely to die young. More likely to have heart problems. More likely to sweat more and smell worse. More likely to crush furniture. More likely get food poisoning. More likely to get diabetes. More likely to get out of breath doing simple tasks.

"worry less on calories and just be happy we have more to offer."

Not more to offer. Just bigger portions

I think we all do place too much emphasis on lookings. Fat folks don't necessarily look bad. They ARE undeniably less healthy. No matter what you want to tell yourself, you would feel better if you were thin.

And yeah, I'm on a diet this week. Sucks to be me.

"Any specific diet you're using, Replay?"

Yeah, the one where you eat salads from Wendys until you can't take it anymore and start back on the McDonalds plan.

It's rough being a single guy on a diet. Take fruits & veggies. If you buy tiny portions, you pay a fortune. If you buy in quantity, it's rotten in a week. I'm perfectly CAPABLE of cooking, but with the portions involved, it really is cheaper to eat out.

There's a really popular diet aloose right now in California, Replay; the South Beach diet. My 56-year-old sister has been on it for about five months and swears it's the only diet she's ever been able to follow with ease.

Here's a link:

On the other hand, as a single man you might find it easier to do the high-protien, low-carb Atkins diet.

http://atkins.com/

I know people who've met their goals with both. I wish you luck and don't give up!

" they pay the same price for their clothes. "

There speaks a man who has never been in a big and tall shop.
A nice sport jacket cost me what a very nice suit would cost you. And the variety is much less. $20 t-shirts and $50 plain cheap dress shirts.

So far the Atlins diet is the first one I have tried that actually works.
My doctor put me on a conventional calorie counting diet at 1600 calories a day and I did better and took it down to 1400 calories a day. At 1400 calories a day for a month I weighed within a pound of where I started.

Gravid, I realize you've got painful arthritis; does it prevent you from taking leisurely walks? In my "home-remedy" economy, nothing eliminates unwanted pounds so fast as a combination of sensible eating and daily walking.
My 82-year-old Mom has been doing Tai Chi every day for about six months now. Nope, it's not "weight-loss" exercise, but it has greatly improved her sense of balance and, surprisingly, has helped those few joints in which she has arthritis.
A Boyfriend From My Past had been a heavyweight wrestler in high school. Probably, he tipped the scales at 300 in his twenties (when I knew him). Were he here today, he could attest to the paucity of clothing choices available to large people, and commiserate that when he was able to find clothes that fit, they were rarely fashionable, and cost a fortune.

Best of luck to you, too, with Atkins.

Gravid - there is a CD on ebay of 2000 Atkins friendly recipes. No I am not the seller! I bought one of these a couple weeks ago and it's great. There are some BS recipes in there (do we REAALY need a recipe for antipasto) but the vast majority of them are really good and as a single person that most of the time finds cooking to be a waste of time that could be better spent doing other things, very quick to prepare and cook. If you start getting tired of the same old thing and need a some new idea or have a building craving for a piece of chocolate cheesecake - give it a try.

Thanks - I'll try one of those CDs.
Fortunately I love to cook and try a lot of recipes off the web and make things up myself.
We had a brocolli salad with golden raisins, freshly made bacon crumbles and sunflower seeds and a touch of sweet onion today. And shrimp egg foo young for a main dish. I was just careful to avoid the raisins where my wife didn't worry about them. Last night we had veal parmesian with low carb pasta and a complex salad. In the morning I will make a omlette with asparagus, red pepper, onion and three kinds of cheese. Doing Atkins well is not about just grilling mounds of meat. You can only do that so long. It is a lot of slicing and dicing and work to keep a variety. One thing helping is you have more low carb products coming out all the time. We found a new low carb bread last week at whole foods from Natural Ovens Bakery that only has 3 grams of carb per slice and it has just as good of flavor and texture as normal bread. In fact it is better than the 6 gram a slice stuff we were buying that was slightly spongy in texture.
Yeah - A long walk is not leisurly for me - it's torture. I have a mountain bike and can ride it with much less loading on my feet and knees than walking.
What I am doing right now is I put a wool blanket down on the living room floor and work out without standing including a lot of motions that are similar to tia chi that a physical therapist has shown me and work out with free hand weights - dumbells. And I have an exercycle that does not have a seat. It goes under my desk and I peddle while surfing. I also work out and swim in a pool. Fortunately for me I have access to two pool facilities. With both lanes and small theropy pools.

Oh great - it's 2am and now I a hungry thanks to you. Can I move in with you for a month?

I'm actually not good at motivating myself to make "meals" so I do 5 to six "large snacks" instead. Generally 3 are a chunk of meat in one of 4 or 5 different marinades I keep around that I toss on the George Foreman for a couple minutes when I'm not in the mood to fix a real meal.

I thought that giving up bread and potatos would be torture but it has turned out that it is tortillas that I miss the most

Yeah and I wish somebody would come up with a good low carb cracker!
Nothing beats a cracker to put cheese on.

There are LOw-carb tortilla shells out there. About 3-5 grams of carbs, whole wheat, even has fiber! Fill 'em with scrambled egg etc., for breakfast; sandwiches, burritos. I've lost 40 lbs last year and feel great. Lots of veggies & only whole grain breads, occasionally sourdough. All meats EXcluding wienies..never cared for the contents.
Cut out sugar, replaced it with PURE fructose. Cut my intake by 1/3...just about everyone eats too much. I've never dieted, They DON'T work. Change your eating habits to something you can live with for the rest of your life. Sensible eating is what it is called.
Kavli is pretty good for crackers, lower in carbs & fat.
Everyone I know that's on Atkins, considers fiber potions (metamucil?) and laxatives as part of the diet.

Two or three fiber tablets a day yeah. A laxitive no. And you should have several helpings of greens either cooked or as salad and we always have green beans or squash or something like asperagus. I like to fry spinich lightly with a tablespoon of olive oil pine nuts and a couple spoonfulls of crushed garlic. Maybe a pinch of cumin.
The low carb bread we are getting now has quite a bit of fiber in it.
Just bought some low carb bagels at Whole Foods today and they make womderful hamburger buns. Only 7 grams. We use bean sprouts and alfalfa sprouts. When we make a sandwich we pile on cucumber avacado tomato and sprouts. Sometimes a little sweet onion.

Being with a fat woman provides shade in the summer, warmth in the winter and something to grab on to when you are falling out of bed

A couple of years ago for 2 months I tried a diet that is kinda like Atkins. It's called the Caveman diet. It's a high protein, high fat and very low carbohydrate diet. basically you can eat anything that the cavemen ate and in any quantity that you wanted. This included eggs, all meat and fish, nuts, most vegees, and most fruits very sparingly, etc. No processed foods were allowed like cereals and bread, pastas, canned food, sauces and salad dressings except mustard, etc. Rice, beans or any legumes wasn't allowed either or coffee, teas, juices or dairy products like milk, cheese or butter.

There is a book called The Caveman Diet that you can prolly find at Amazon that tells about this diet.

I did fudge a little by allowing sausage, bacon, cheese and vinegar which are considered processed foods but it was hard getting past the no bread part.

In 2 months I lost about 18 to 20 pounds but then I also stepped up my excersise routine and I was able to do this because I felt alot more energetic.

I found it to be a very expensive diet and it quickly became cost prohibitive for me Meat, cheese, fresh veggees and fruits are expensive.

Some days I would eat 4 or 5 large high protein and high fat meals a day and I was still losing weight, but normally I was satisfied with 2 or 3 meals with a couple of snacks in between.

I think that the main difference between the Atkins diet and the Caveman diet is the amount of carbs that are allowed. The idea being that if you consumed anymore than the amount of carbs in a tomato a day or a pear once a week while on the Caveman diet it would cause the fat that you would be eating everyday to be turned into fat because you would burn the carbs consumed instead of the fat intake.

One dish that I used to like was a large salad that I added a whole package of fried sausage to and I poured the grease from the pan into the salad and then added about 3 tablespoons of vinegar.

To set the record straight - IT IS A MYTH THAT BIRTH CONTROL PILLS CAUSE YOU TO GAIN WEIGHT!

It disgusts me to see an overweight person in line at McDonald's ordering hoards of food and then blaming McDonald's for their weight gain. Diet and exercise are key. There are exercises even the disabled can do. It's all about nutrition - not hormones or genes. Granted some people's metabolisms are slower and they can't eat what other people eat because it doesn't burn off as quickly. My daughter is a case in point. I can eat whatever I want and not gain a pound. I burn off whatever I take in (sorry). My daughter, on the other hand, cannot. She had a terrible weight problem. She finally took matters into her own hands and stopped eating at fast food restaurants and started cooking healthy meals at home and exercising (walking mostly). The pounds melted off. If we do go out to eat for lunch, she'll get a baked potato at Wendy's and eat it plain. She's done a fantastic job of maintaining her weight. She'll "fall of the wagon" occasionally and will treat herself to a "no-no" meal, but she exercises it off.

Overweight people are no more jolly deep down than anyone else. They over compensate for the weight. Their health is in danger and they should be helped, not poked fun at.

A friend of mine is doing Atkins here in California. Yesterday, she tried Carl's Jr.'s new 6-carb burger. (Actually, if you specify no mayo, mustard, or ketchup -- the three condiments they automatically put on it -- the carbs go even lower.) She had hers without the condiments and said it was really good.

The burger consists of:

two "bun-shaped" chunks of iceberg lettuce, two tomato slices, two or three raw Bermuda onion rings, a couple of dill pickle slices, a slice of American cheese, and the burger itself is huge -- between five and six inches in diameter.

They run about four bucks apiece out here.
