Is there any possibility his political troubles are connected to his getting ricin in the mail? maybe somebody is irritated with him....

No, I wouldn't think so. No more than when the anthrax was sent to the democratic leader, Daschle. Most likely some nut case who's looking for his 15 minutes of fame. Since they never found out who sent the anthrax most likely they won't find out who is responsible for this either.
If a potential terrorist is involved, they may be testing the new WH security system put in place since the anthrax letters were received, to see what changes have been made.
