I'm hoping someone here may know the answer to my question. I went to WalMart today (ya, I know - boo, hiss). I went to use my debit card as a credit card and the machine kept asking for my pin. I told the checkout person I didn't want to use it as a debit, but wanted to use it as a MasterCard. I was told that beginning 2/1, WalMart will no longer allow you to use your debit card as a credit card. Huh? Are they allowed to do that since they accept Visa and MasterCard? If I use it as a debit, I get a fee from my bank AND WalMart. I told her to basically kiss my a** and walked out. Anyone know the answer to this? I thought Visa and MasterCard had strict rules about this sort of thing. WalMart is finished in my book after this one.

walmart and other stores have been suing mc/visa on the fees they charge on bank card used as credit cards.
you can search online and find out the details.

i shop at costco and they dont want any bank card or mc/visa credit card,only american express,cash or check or costco gift card.
they said accepting bank card,they still have to pay a fee whether it is used as debit or credit card.

But the fee is smaller when it is used as a debit card.

I shop at Cosco and use my MasterCard debit card all the time as a MasterCard. They've never said anything about it. So, it's okay as an eBay seller to have to pay the fees to Visa and MasterCard, but the big boys don't want to do it? It's the cost of doing business. A lot of people don't like to carry cash nor do they want the fees associated with debit card use. Maybe the stores should do like eBay sellers do and build that cost into the cost of the product. Why not? They've jacked up prices already. What's another 50 cents or so. Geesh. And, just what is WalMart doing with their profits? They sure aren't paid to their employees.

are you saying you are using your bank mc card as a mc credit card??
this is not what they told me??
ebay sellers do not have to accept credit card payments either thru their own account or paypal,but they do as they dont want to hear the excuse your check is in the mail.
walmart has its own credit card,i would think they want you to use that card instead.

I don't own a credit card. A couple of years ago I had to file bankruptcy because I had lost my job and vowed I would not own one. I use my debit card as a MasterCard. It has the MasterCard logo on it.

what i ask is - are you using your bank card which has a mc logo as a debit card or a credit card??
i believe for the merchant,either way it has to pay a discount fee and transaction fee.
maybe it is smaller as a debit card,but still there is a fee.
as for why cant they built it into the product price,well,they dont want to,so they can save us some money.
as a seller,i always appreciate when my buyer sends me a check or money order.

Cheryl, I can't answer your specific question about Credit/Debit cards and using them at Wal-mart. Sorry.
I would like to mention that Costco has partnered with American Express to offer a dual Costco Membership/AmEx Card, which is good anywhere AmEx is accepted and grants one an extra 2% off all Costco purchases.
I realize you're not in the market for another credit card, but others here might want to take advantage of this deal. (And no, I don't work for Costco or AmEx! )

i just read my merchant account statement-starting jan 1,merchants can refuse visa cards-debit or credit.
no mention of master charge.

I have a Visa Bank Debit card with my Bank and of course my Paypal card which I use as a Master card. I use both of them at Wal-Mart,Used the Mastercard yesterday. I also use it at the Post Office everyday and I buy gas. I don't have any credits cards,I only use my bank cards.

when you say you are using paypal card as MC,are you using your own fund in your paypal account??
where does the money for purchase come from??

If you use your PayPal debit card, the money comes from your PayPal account. I use mine when I can because you get cash back.

Don't know if it's a regional thing or not. There is a sign at my WalMart stating that effective February 1, debit cards can no longer be used as credit cards. That's fine with me. There are plenty of other stores around here that accept them as credit cards. I have a feeling that this WalMart will lose business over it. No one carries cash anymore and no one wants to pay a fee themselves for using their card as a debit instead of a credit.

Stop - Merchants are charged one rate for credit card transactions and another for debit card. Credit card transactions are more expensive. Since the card companies charge credit card rates for debit cards that are used as credit cards Walmart has decided not to accept that form of usage. You can still use a traditional credit card and you can still use debits cards but you may not use a debit card as a "credit card".
Cheryl - It's not regional. It is a national policy that was announced following battles with the card companies. Also I am not sure why you think it is going to cause a loss in business because someone has to enter a pin number rather than sign a receipt.
PS - Debit cards are traditionally not charged additional fees when used for a purchase -- I know mine does not. If you are charged fees by your bank for using your debit card at a store you might want to switch banks.

the debit card fees should be checked into too..
I dont get a fee for using my debit card from my credit union. and I dont get a fee for using my bank of america debit card too (although its rare that I use my debit cards, and the bank of america one is an associate one, so I'm not sure if they charge otherwise.. I dont think so though)
I would think though, using it as a point of sale at a location that accepts ATM cards (one of the ATM card networks), but not mastercard/visa, you will get a fee.. from the terminal that you use it, and from your bank, unless its one of the accepted networks.
I just pay with my amex so I can get those silly reward points. heh. I didn't think I'll buy into that, but eh it works. sure its like spending $2,000 and you get 10-20 bucks, but thats one magazine subscription I dont have to pay for!
