do this
right click on the picture, then scroll down to properties, click properties, then you will see the url, copy and paste between the brackets shown above

It should work, logansdad.
Make sure that there are no spaces between the end tags and the url or spaces within the end tag. and also make sure that the brackets are turned in the right direction.

Nah, Logan may be right, Helen. Geocities (and a lot of other places) have their gifs encoded so that even when it looks like one can link to them, it can't happen. (I know; I've been hunting for an obnoxious sigline 'bumper sticker' ala Bear for days now. With no webspace of my own to upload it to, I have to link directly, and a whole lot of folks, understandably, don't want me or others sucking up their bandwidth every time I make a post.)
Logan, one suggestion: if the image you wanted to post has a name or a few key words you could use in a Google Images Search,
