The infamous Howard Stern radio show was taken off the air in several major markets by ClearChannel. Recently Stern has complained about the many "dumps"(removal) of content by the station's own censors, out of fear of fines by the FCC, amidst the post-Janet Jackson Superbowl censorship frenzy. The show seemed to be no more raunchy than ever, but there was recently more pressure to censor it causing Stern much angst. He blames this on Bush and Colin Powell's son who heads the FTC.

Hi Stu - He blames this on Bush and Colin Powell's son.
Everyone blames everything on Bush....so he's not alone. Somehow some appear to think Bush has the power to control/regulate every nook and cranny in the world, on each and every issue.
I hadn't heard about Stern, but had read last week that all ClearChannel affiliates had received written warning about abiding by the FCC rules. They're trying to protect themselves from all those fines the FCC has been giving out.

Are you suggesting that Bush's appointees do not do what Bush tells them to do? The last Treasury Secretary will disagree with that assumption.
If you think Clear Channel did this on their own without Powell Jr putting a bug in their ear, you'd be wrong.
You don't take a huge market leader and money maker like Stern off the air because you all of a sudden feel a tinge of moral duty to the public. The FCC told them to muzzle Stern or there would be fines in the offing.

I personally think it was because of all the 'screaming' about Janet Jackson's actions at the SuperBowl. There were calls for the FCC to do something about it. That, in turn, made the media honcho's get real nervous about paying more FCC fines, than they already had paid. They're just working to avoid paying more fines and court costs, plus keeping the 'screamers' [their customers] happy.
I really don't think Bush called anyone and put out orders.

Linda, there is a move in this country to squash everything deemed not moral, decent and right. People are nit-picking at what they choose to be offended at. My God, it is so much more offensive to me to see a homeless person freezing in the cold; than to care what Howard says about boobs or whatever. Yet this is what people spend their precious time complaining about.

reamond - You were right about Powell's involvement....but only to support the already established FCC rules.
This is a super article that addresses both sides of the issue, imo.

Max - I believe this is what you might have been referring to.
Infinity Broadcasting, which owns the Stern show, paid a $1.7 million fine in 1995 to settle several indecency violations related to it. The show is heard on dozens of Infinity stations.
That's why Stern was fired, imo. They don't want to pay those hefty fines again.

The whole thing is silly if you ask me. If you don't like him, don't listen. It's called freedom of choice. If you don't like the sexual overtones of some of the TV shows, don't watch. It's just another case of the government thinking they know what's best for me. Personally, I think he's an idiot. My solution is that I don't listen to him. That doesn't mean that no one else has the right to.

Under FCC rules and federal law, radio stations and over-the-air television channels cannot air material that refers to sexual and excretory functions between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., when children may be tuning in. The rules do not apply to cable and satellite channels and satellite radio.

It's too bad that we can't focus on things really offensive.
Howard Stern's indiscretion is so silly that it makes me wonder if focus on his show could be a diversionary tactic to avoid discussion of the Social Security debacle in which money will be taken away from old people so that the wealthy can have their tax cut untouched. That is offensive. I could write all night about what is really offensive.
As a diversion, the Jesus chain saw massacre movie would have sufficed.

I'm with you, Cheryl. Personally, I think Stern's show is sleazy trash and therefore don't tune in to it. But I would never dictate that others can't.
edited to put "don't" in

Just so there's no confusion, the Stern show was dumped by Clear Channel which carries his show in six U.S. markets (Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Rochester, San Diego, Pittsburgh and Louisville). He wasn't fired by Infinity which syndicates the show nor is he off the air in any of the other 75 markets currently carrying his show.

I think some of you may have missed the Clear Channel story the day before where they fired Bubba the Love Sponge whose antics are about to cost them a few hundred thousand in additional funds and fines. The day after the fired BTLS Stern has a guest that violated another FCC regulation. The Janet Jackson incident has turned the whole entertainment industry on it's ear (no more bare butts on NYPD Blue etc) and the FCC is looking for blood. Clear Channel suspended (not fired, suspended) Stern more than likely to show the FCC that they are making an effort and so avoid additional fines.
You have to remember that Clear Channel is under the microscope anyway because of their massive market saturation.
Oh yeah - Linda, Stern raked Clinton over the coals for years because when he was appealing his massive fines, Clinton didn't come to his rescue (not sure why he thought he should) Stern just hates everyone who does not consider Fredericks of Hollywood to be outerwear

Michael Medved was talking about just this on his radio show this afternoon.
He did say that Infinity? still was carrying his show
He said, his show is a little nuts, but that he knows him personally and thinks Howard Stern is a brilliant guy.
(and this coming from a Conservative talk show host! )
He also is a movie critic, and reviewed the Passion or better known as the Jesus chainsaw massacre movie (Helen, that is SO cute! and gave it a glowing review..
btw he is Jewish. amazing.

The "thing" about all this nonsense is that the FCC rules by whim and is not answerable. Stern mocks the FCC relentlessly and the previous chairman and the current one target him specially. In all of the appeals Stern's lawyers would say that he was fined $100k because on some date he said "penis", while Phil Donahue said "penis" 67 times. These idiots reply with straight faces about Donahue or Jerry Springer being "news" programs, while Stern is prurient. LOL

Stern has pretty much always backed republican candidates. At least thats the way it was when I was up in NY and listened to his show.
I heard today he said he would do one interview with a woman reporter, but he had to pick out her lingerie.

Stern tried to bring that crap hole of a show here about 5 years ago. The show got such poor ratings that it didn't even make it here for a year. Tom Bernard at KQRS (the highest rated morning show in the country) absolutely kicked his ass. We haven't had to listen to Stern's garbage for roughly four years now.
