I was reading an article about Bushs recent and future plans to appear at more sporting and "everyday guy" events in order to instill that perception in the public eye. It made me wonder. what kind of president do people really want? I'm not talking about specific people or party affiliations. I'm talking about the traits you want in the leader of this country. Is an "everyday guy" really what this country is looking for in its president? Is it what you want and if not - what traits do you think are important for a "leader of the free world"?

A mixture between this one and Reagan would be almost perfect in my book...
Strong National Defense and a no non-sense attitude...
Perfect would be kicking the UN out of this country and us being in isolation for a decade or so...

Some aspects of "regular guy" are okay but I don't really want to know about their personal life behind closed doors. Or under their clothes...... like when someone asked Clinton if he wore boxers or briefs. If they are too much the "regular guy" I think it's harder to remove themselves from that image when they have to be "Chief".
Looks don't matter to me but I would like to see a leader that shows an inner strength, someone articulate and with a sense of humor. Someone who looks very confident and is a good listener if reporters or interviewers asked questions, someone who truly believes in their policies so they can answer without stumbling or double-talking because it comes from their heart.
Someone who tries to do best for their country and the world and listens to the people that they represent and has the people's views in mind first, not their own. Also someone that instilled in me a feeling of trust when decisions are made. In other words, the almost perfect woman or man.

I want a president with personal integrity along with the intelligence and experience to lead this country. He should recognize the value of world opinion and international cooperation. I value a president who has wisdom along with knowledge of the futility of war. I also want a president who will communicate honestly and sincerely with the American people. A good president will have the interest of all Americans in mind -- not just the wealthy. And he will honor the constitution of the United States of America.
Such efforts mentioned that Bush is making to portray an "image" is just another of the many illustrations that he doesn't have what it takes to be a president.

Why not let the American public decide the next president reality style.
Fox should come up with a show "Elected by the People" or "Election Idol"
Then we would really have the people's president and not some so called politician who thinks he knows what the everyday worker wants.

Logans - I have to agree with that although I think that the "contestants" should be nominated. Let's be honest here, no sane person, and certainly some of the most quaalified would never run for political office out of fear of the press seeking every youthful indiscretion they, their family, and or former business partners may have committed. The publics curiosity and the press's desire to skewer in the name of the publics right to know, high sales and TV ratings have probably roobed this country of some qualified and admirable possible leaders.
As for me, I want someone with a strong background in business, a student of history, someone with foresight and a willingness to make unpopular decisions when it is in the best interest of the nation. I want someone with a world view, not just a local one that sees that this nation, and it's economy is liinked to that of many nations and takes the whole picture into effect when making decisions. I also want someone that is able to say "this is not my decision to make" sometimes (i.e. Creating a Marriage Czar) and focuses their attention and this nations financing on the issues that government should be involved in and stays out of ones they shouldn't.

Fenix, while it would be interesting to watch "Elected by America" I know that would never be a reality. I can't see "Joe the Plumber" or Susie the CEO running this country without having any sort of political background.
I would like to see the next President having more of a business background and start running this country as a business. No more $500 hammers. No more spending trillions more than what we get in income. NO more tax loopholes for the wealthy.
I would have loved to see Ross Perot as president.

I'd welcome someone firmly attached to reality who doesn't belong to mystic fraternal organizations suitable for 10 year old boys to play at in their tree fort and who can tell the difference between countries who actually have the capacity to bring harm to the US and bogey men who are left over puppets of the previous regimes.
As a bonus it wouldn't hurt to have someone who could articulate his thoughts in clear standard English using full sentances. At least we wouldn't have to worry that how he speaks is how he thinks.

I'd like to see a president who was truly concerned for the welfare of the people of this country. One who wouldnt get caught up in washingtonian political games or gain.
Thats a fantasy, tho.
add: Fenix, I cant believe Bush is marketing himself to the so called nascar dads! Not likely a whole bunch of them relate to his background.

Nero - the article I was reading was saying that he was trying to stregnthen his image with his base demographic of white mails although I goota say that "buzzing" the raceway in his 747 and then taking a lap in his motorcade hardly seems "every man" ish to me either. He should have at least taken the lap in the pace car. Then they could have auctioned it off in the name of one of a Daytona area literacy program........................... Sometimes I think I should be a media consultant

What KIND of President do you want?
I don't think we could have a better president than Bush. He's cut from the same mold as Lincoln and Reagan.
In the future, I want to see a black, hispanic or female conservative republican president. Condi Rice might be the one.
And must be a good Christian. You can't lead the free world without help from above.

"same mold as Lincoln and Reagan"
LOL - I totally agree.
Lincoln was the one who totally destroyed states rights. Before him each state was still sovereign and had every valid expectation they could withdraw from the union if it no longer served them. A sad road down which the States of Europe are now following - and the will find out they are slaves in the end. Oh - and Lincoln was the first to suspend Habeas Corpus and frighten Congress and the Supreme Court out of their socks.
Reagan also scared the whole world with his finger on the nuclear button and at the same time unable to distinguish between reality and movies he sort of remebered making. At least his dementia had not progressed to where he could not pronounce nuclear like W's alcohol pickled brain.
