Iraq personnel to receive thousands of care packages sent by Texans
By The Associated Press

(4/12/04- DALLAS, TX) — The 10,000 care packages shipped over the weekend for U.S. troops serving in Iraq were not generic; many had a personal touch.

The cardboard boxes, packed as part of a program run by the United Service Organizations, contained items soldiers had requested. They included prepaid calling cards, disposable cameras, decks of playing cards and sunscreen.

Grapevine Fire Capt. Randy Bradley and other members of Station No. 5 jumped at the chance to join about 200 other volunteers assembling the shipment Saturday at Embassy Suites Outdoor World in Grapevine.

"It's a lot of work, but it's real gratifying to get here, support the troops and meet people," Bradley told The Dallas Morning News in Monday's editions.

A Vietnam veteran and the commander for Veterans of Foreign Wars District 3 said he wished the idea of stuffing boxes for troops had been thought up in his day.

"People just didn't think about doing something like this back then," said Jerry Murphree. "It was a very moving experience to see all the people out here helping out."

The threat of anthrax after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks prompted the Department of Defense to stop forwarding packages from the American public to "any service member." In its place, the USO created the care package program. Since 2001, it has sent more than 230,000 packages to troops.

"When they said they needed someone to move boxes, I said, 'That's me; that's my job,' " said Michael Fowler, an engineer at Lockheed Martin who put himself through college by unloading shipments at Wal-Mart. "I would do this again, gladly."

'We have dispatched Dr. David Kay...to search for the bio-warfare agents we believe hidden in Senator Kerry's forehead. If Senator Kerry has used botox as part of a wrinkle enrichment program, he is in violation of UN Resolution 752. Upon receiving Dr. Kay's report, the weapons of mass destruction that Senator Kerry so adamantly insists do not exist...may well be above his very nose.'" --Dick Cheney when asked whether John Kerry has had Botox treaments

That's really GREAT news bear. Hope it serves as an inspiration to others to organize and do the same thing.

They can always use personal hygiene items... disposable razors, soap, deodorant, clean socks, gum, anti-bacterial ointments and bandages for those foot blisters, etc. Plus music tapes, reading materials, and letters of appreciation for what they're going through for us.

Re-elect President Bush!!
