The sad part is that the Pentagon is hiding the numbers of wounded soldiers.
There are many that will be wounded for life and will the government give them good care from now on or will they be ignored........ like the Veterans in the hospitals laying in deplorable conditions like Diane Sawyer recently investigated with a secret camera?
What about the families and the cost to care for their wounded loved ones?
Happy to see that you made it back alive, Jack and that you still enjoy your life. It shows in your posts here that you are a "real" person. Take care!

I think the public should be able to see that as all you see are the coffins and that shouldn't be hurting the families. It is the reality of war, same as seeing the injured.

Would I want to see pics of our wounded? No
Would I want to see pics of our dead? No
What I or anyone would want to see pics of makes no difference. What would make a difference is; Do the families of the wounded and dead and the wounded themselves want their images plastered all over the internet and/or TV? I would have to say post 'em but ask the wounded and their families first.
I beleive it would hurt the families to post images of their loved ones, dead or wounded, for all to gawk at. I can only imagine how someone might feel about seeing images of their wounded or dead son, daughter, brother, sister, mom or dad on the internet or a TV screen.
It comes down to a matter of respect for the dead, the wounded and their families.

The pictures are disturbing, that is for sure. But how long that lasts to us in our desensitized seen-it-all society though, makes me question whether some are exploiting these pictures for pure political gain against the war.
I've always thought death was a highly personal and solemn thing to experience.
Showing them like a bunch of annoyomous potters coffins belittles the individual life that was in them, in my opinion.

All I'm saying is that you should be aware of the consequences of showing these types of images. The consequences are that, what if the families of dead and wounded and the wounded themselves don't want their pictures showed.
I just think that a little respect could be given to these people and they should be asked first for permission before showing their dead and wounded pics.
You call it political reasons I say it's morbid curiosity to want to see this type of imagery.
Come on now we all saw the Tom Hanks movie, Saving Ryans Privates. In this movie there were some gorry scenes and IMO it was a true depiction of the horrors of war. So why do we really need to see actual images of the horrors of war as inflicted upon our own soldiers in RL or real death?
We all know what is going on with our soldiers, we all know what it looks like to see a leg blown off, we all know what it looks like to see burned and maimed. I don't see it as sanitizing government actions to not show these images, I see it as respect for the dead, wounded and their families.
I will say though, that I beleive we should be given the numbers of dead and wounded on both sides of the conflict, civilians included.

If seeing a picture of a casket that has no visible identity "bothers" the relatives, they should go shut themselves up in a closet and never come out. I guess we should also get rid of the monument of the unknown soldier as it might upset someone too.
Having an open and honest government is much more important than offending a deceased soldiers relative.

To me this issue is strickly a political one. The anti-war people think it will win more support for why we should pull out if we show the coffins of our dead soldiers. The 'sometimes war is necessary' crowd think this disrespects the families wishes....and it may or may not....everybody's different.
By the way....most probably already know by know but the Drudge Report said some of the coffin pictures posted were not really returning soldiers coffins...but rather some were coffins of our astronauts when their bodies were being transported. I'm sure others were our soldiers though.
Anyway....I remember a time when our soldiers bodies were being returned and the media show our president golfing on a 1/2 screen while the other half of the screen was of the coffins of returning servicemen. You'll never convince me that wasn't a political move.....to make a point.
And in the past when coffins were returned to.....there was a media circus....that's what most disturbed the families.
For me...I have no problem seeing pictures of the coffins....but I do believe they are used to gain support to end [whatever] war. I hold the soldiers who gave their lives in the highest regard possible and thank them quietly for paying the ultimate price for their country. I also pray for the families of the soldier who was killed.

I don't remember this policy of privacy for the returning dead changing from 1991 to now. Are you saying it has?
posted on April 24, 2004 03:31:27 PM new
The policy was never enforced by Clinton -- that's executive privelege.
The DOD released the photos due to a Freedom of Information act request. The DOD released the photos and when the Bush administration found out casket pictures were released they issued an order not to release any more photos under any circumstances.
So what we have here is the executive branch of the government controlling information.

BTW Just got his in today::
A friend's soldier son was flown from Iraq to Army Hosp in Germany to have his nose re-built and had to wait 3 weeks to boot.
It seems that his transport company was so low on water that a driver passed out and caused an accident that crushed his face and nose. He was lucky, another guy was crushed to death.
There was no water because convoys aren't moving due to attacks.
Unbelievable. Bush is brilliant, he needs 4 more years.

It is also amazing that supporters of the idiot liar Bush thought it was OK to show victims remains being removed from the WTC for a Bush political commercial and now support Bush gagging the press from using unidentifiable casket images for news reporting.
You Bush supporters are anti-American. We have troops in the field fighting for our Constitutional freedoms while you support Bush defiling those same freedoms.
