Stopwhining, it's called eating too much! Mr. Kraft just got back from a business trip to Orlando. He said that at the dinners, the Americans gobbled their food up within minutes and were back for seconds, while the Canadians sat there stunned. He said it was unbelievable how many fat people there were at Disneyland and everywhere he looked, everyone was always eating something.
I've noticed it too. When I go over to Michigan for lunch, they serve you on a PLATTER not a plate. Enough food for a family of four. Maybe some have forgotten that if you eat right and excercise, you won't get fat.

Yup. Simple problem.
Too Much Food = FAT!
It's not really even the lack of exercise. We all just eat too much of the wrong things.

so Kraft, your saying if one lives in Canada, they'll be fit and trim?
Your Mr Kraft and the other Canadians were stunned? to see Americans go back for seconds.... hmmmmmm have to think about that.. I take it, this must have been a buffet (all you can eat type thing)
I don't know, of course I've been to a buffet, its that I've never noticed how many times others go back and get more.
I try not to keep watch on what others do in public places, as its not my place for one thing and I really don't care what others do. What I do care about, is the my own manners, and when my children were young, theirs.
Your right in saying that you eat more, you get bigger. But then there is alway the ones with the super metabolisms who eats all they want and won't gain an ounce, now how do you figure those people?

take more,give less=fat
those with high metabolism rate run into problem as they age and their rate slows.
food is expensive in many countries-french have a hard boil egg and a cup of yogurt ,japanese have soup noodles with some topping, but here we have all you can eat buffet .
do you ever notice how much food is wasted at those buffet-half eaten eggroll, soup, pound cake, strawberry, canteloupe, fried chicken wings, general tsao chicken, mogolian beef with brocoili, etc

Yep, I'll bet tons of food is wasted at the 'all you can eat buffets' and its a real shame.
I don't know how restaraunts run, but I'm sure they have some sort of health regulations, where the employees can't take it home, its probably mandated that they have to throw it all out, and thats a waste.

next time when you go to an all you can eat buffet, pay attention to the soup, leftover diced chicken kew is now in today's chicken soup.
chinese restaurants are known to sweep the leftover white rice into a large bowl to make fried rice. The secret of fried rice is that the rice must be dry,so leftover rice is ideal.

Yes.
I don't notice as many overweight people in Michigan as much as Florida - maybe because it's more of a retirement state. (??) When Mr. Kraft was at the dinners, which was steak and lobster each night, he said most people went back for second plates. He said none of them could figure out why they needed all that food. Stopwhining is right too. Food's expensive here. A steak and lobster dinner would run around $40.00 per person at a nice restaurant, so you can see that nobody can really $afford$ to get fat here.
posted on May 3, 2004 07:35:37 PM new
Dinner as you described, steak and lobster at a nice restaraunt here is about the same, probably more, but people still love to go out.
I've stayed away from Michigan Florida? I don't know, thats a big state, yes there are a lot of retirees there, my dad has a condo there. There's a lot of beaches there, I don't know is if to say that overall FL is an overweight state.
Here, in Seattle, I see overweight people, sure, but I see a lot of anorexic Barbies too. Probably could be said the same for CA.
Now kraft, I figured out your job! Your the Canadian Tourism PR person right?

I think most people try their best to eat properly but a lot of jobs anymore are ones where you sit at a desk all day. I'm sure the numbers for overweight people is the same in the the U.S. & Canada.

I just love going to the all-you-can eat buffet, Furr's Cafeteria, but I get what I am going to get by just going through the line once and I never go back for seconds. I do load my tray with all that I can fit on it though. I will usually get 2 entrees, fish on 1 plate and roast beast on the other plate along with mashed potaters, brown gravy and some sort of vegetable like corn or green beans and a roll. Sometimes when they have some sort of Mexican entree like enchiladas, I will get that along with spanish rice and cornbread. A green lettuce salad with ranch dressing, croutons and bacon bits. For desert they have this pie called million dollar pie and once in awhile they have this really good pie called billion dollar pie. they are both cream type pies and I will usually get 2 slices. Iced tea rounds out the meal and I gotta get a couple of jalapeno peppers to eat along with my meal.
I am starting to get hungry just by writing all of this down.
NTS
They do have to throw out what they don't sell. A number of years ago I worked as a garbage truck driver on a commercial route and some of the dumpsters that I emptied were at restaurants. I saw alot of good food go to waste, it was disgusting. The most disgusting dumpsters that I emptied on my route, in terms of food wasted were the ones at the back of the kitchens at the penetentiary of NM. Sometimes these dumpsters were filled with nothing but food.
I used to find alot of neat stuff in the dumpsters on my route, especially from the Salvation Army and Goodwill dumpsters and I usually went back to the yard with the cab of my truck filled with stuff, but thats another story, I suppose.

As I live out here in the bushes and don't get to see large numbers of humans together very often, I've noticed in the last year or two that when I do get someplace and have an opportunity to people watch, there sure seems to be an increase in the number of seriously obese people out there. People need to get out and do some honest physical work, the health clubs and exercise machines are obviously not helping. What's really scary is how many fat kids there are.

I'm fortunate as I've never had a weight problem (good genes) but I know some people have slower metabolisms than others and it's a struggle for them to control their weight. I don't eat in restaurants very often anymore because of MSG and other preservatives.
You're right prof, the biggest concern now is overweight children and the US has the highest rate of obese kids worldwide because of fast food and a more sedentary lifestyle. Canada is becoming concerned about this because of the soda and snack machines in the schools. Parents are so stressed from working hard that they don't always take time to cook proper meals so kids are getting fatter here too.

It's amazing to me the number of kids who are sent to school by their parents without breakfast. "But he/she won't eat" is often the reply I get when I ask parents if they're feeding their kids before school...what do you mean won't eat? You're making it a choice?? Since when does a child know enough to make sound nutritional decisions?
Failing to provide healthy meals to a kid, and ensure that the child is eating those meals, is child abuse, plain and simple. Kids are fat because their parents are, or because they don't "have time" to cook decent food for them. What a miserable excuse.

Lots of kids don't eat breakfast nowadays or else it's just one of those sugary cereals.
I was reading an article on Aspartame the other evening and it mentioned the danger of brain damage in children. It makes me wonder about so many kids on Ritalin or antidepressants now, and I often wonder if it's because they don't have a proper diet so they suffer from attention deficit disorder and other ailments.

That is precisely the problem, used to people ate large meals because we worked very hard... now we eat large meals and work but not physical....
Health Clubs will work, however the person going tends to eat more and not less when exercising, so that is the down fall...

Now thats a winner.....not! It does just amaze me how many parents put their young kids on drugs, just mind boggling.
Was watching a clip on CNN the other day where they where talking about parents putting preschoolers on Prozac of all things. Makes me wonder what the doctor is even thinking about to do this.
I would have to seriously question the ethics of any doctor who would prescribe this crap for a preschooler. Time to find another doctor.
I can just see another whole generation of pill poppers growing up who are doomed to all kinds of medical problems later in life.
Walk around any supermarket and you will see parents loading up on junk food. Huge bags of popcorn, soda, etc. etc.
Sure thing is that they are overweight and their kids are in gross shape.
I know that the school boards are hard up for funding but in my humble view there should be no junk food sold in schools till they get into Jr. high and up.

but what is junk food to you is regular staples for them??many children eat nothing but pizza, drink nothing but soda??
snacks??how do parents find snacks which is not junk??
do you think they have time to make their own snack??
lobster and steak dinner does not have to be 40 dollars,i have seen frozen lobster tail and steak for under 15.

trai, its cheaper to buy the crap they call 'lunch' for the public schools.
Yeah, I was watching the news one night, they were talking about the 'addiction' to diet Pepsi or diet Coke. They said, that people get more addicted to the asparteme than they would the stuff they put in regular Pepsi or Coke. They found it also tends for people to crave more carbs when constantly drinking diet colas, go figure...

More and more people are eating while they shop now and some of them are disgusting. Like the ones that eat Cheezies and then wipe their fingers on white t-shirts in my store. Or the ones that spill their drinks all over the place. They totally disregard the No Food or Drink signs.
Look how many people are eating while they walk down the street nowadays or while they're driving their cars.
