Hello All, I travel a fair amount and talk to a lot Maids in Motels. These hard working people work very hard for very low wages and very little benefits. They clean up 12 to 15 rooms a day. Lets all chip in and leave these hard working people a couple dollar tip. I small token of appreciation like this would make a big difference in their lives. I believe in helping hard working Americans.

I always leave maids a tip. I remember several years ago I was at a nice hotel (in Atlanta - I think) and I was "dying" for a pepsi. I found a maid and asked her where I could get a pepsi - she brought me one. I think it cost 80 cents. I gave her $2.00 and told her to keep the change. The next day I overheard her telling one of the other workers - "there's that lady who's the big tipper". I was humbled to think the 1.20 that I thought so little of meant so much to her.

I also used to put the tips on my expense account when I was traveling for business. Once a no-class executive said no more tips. A co-worker even said he had never heard of tipping maids in hotels. I still tipped - I just didn't turn it in anymore.

The working poor are neglected and dependent on occasional tips. We should be ashamed.

The problem with the working poor is that they don't vote. Non unionized workers such as you mention are really mistreated and abused. According to census reports, If people with family incomes under 25,000 had cast ballots at the same rate as those above 75,000, more than 6.8 million additional voters would have gone to the polls in 2000, when Al Gore finished with a slight edge of 543,895 in the popular count over Bush. These added votes would have overcome Florida's biased results and reversed the results.

David Shipler, winner of the Pulitzer Prize wrote a very good book called The Working Poor, pub. 2004, that addresses the problems of the working poor in America.

Leaving a tip for Housekeeping is part of travelling. At least that is what I what taught. I leave $5-$10 for every day I stay at a hotel, depending on my finances.
