We have a super Kroger just open in our neighborhood, and most of the time the parking lot is empty.

Me too.

Looking for input?

When the 1st Walmart Super Center opened prices dropped all over town on groceries but now Kroger has (I believe) given up and and doesn't worry about being competetive on prices, instead gets by on nice facilities and numerous convenient locations, especially in newer upscale neighborhoods.

All of the new Krogers opened since Walmart arrived are in these neighborhoods - all those closed are in working class or below neighborhoods. Krogers has also bought out 2 chains that left town- one local and one
regional and repeated the pattern.

We are soon getting our 1st Publix, a big southern chain, supposed to be very competitive, very nice stores. Hopefully their arrival will drive/keep our grocery costs down but I suspect Kroger wont try real hard against them either- cream the market and go on.

So Kroger's story here is simple, nice facilities, good products, high prices - at times their sale price is higher than competitors regular price.

Because there is one just down the street I still go there for milk, bread and occasionally sale items- but for any "major" shopping it's off to Wally World or Meijer's.

bob - you're right about Kroger's prices. But for some reason I like shopping at Kroger's better than Walmart. We used to have a biggs. they had a nice store and good prices - but they didn't last long.

We're supposed to be getting a Lowes soon and the rumour is that Bigg's may come back. I hope they do.

I like Krogers meat so I buy some of my meat there. I hate shopping at Walmart super center. Do most of my shopping at Sav-a-lot and Aldi.

Cherished,

True about shopping at Kroger- nicer ambiance.Wally world has the ambiance of what it is- a warehouse with linoleum. The Sam's Choice house brands are generally awful watered down crap but if you stick with name brands the prices are right and the price matching guarantee keeps me from having to go to 5 different stores to get the best prices.

MAH,

There's a Sav A Lot not a mile from here - but their meager selection keeps it from being a regular stop - and on some name brand stuff they're higher than Krogers. Cheap on basics, cooking oil, flour, etc.

The very best deals I get are at Big Lots and Dollar stores. I grew up in NYC and know the northeastern brands - many of which are not distributed here in the midwest - and occasionally they get them and deep discount them because nobody here knows these brands. Pathmark, Grand Union, Freshpak etc, all come off around here as
sub standards and are priced accordingly.

well,all you Kroger fans-
This super Kroger store which just open is the only game in town ,and there are 2000 houses within 5 miles radius, not to mention more are coming.
You should see the big pile of beef marked down on the date of expiration, bags of green marked down and no taker.Their deli counter only serve fried chicken and potato wedge as there is not enough business.
The Kroger fans do their full shopping there, the rest of us just drop in to buy a pack of cigarettes, fill water bottles or see if they have anything on sale which is cheaper than their competitor.
I find this Kroger card plus business very annoying, why should i carry this dumb card all the time??This is passe and they should get rid of it.
On saturday, they have more employees than customers.
Upscale?I bet you if wholefood market comes in ,it will have more business than Kroger!
