btw, is there a cheaper alternative to CENTRAL air...... Mike is looking at putting central air in here, and I THINK ITS WAY TOO EXPENSIVE! Isn't there anything else, besides those A/C units that you put in the window, we have one of those, but its like it only cools down one room, and a small area at that.

It's 85 here in Cleveland, too and it's 6:30 in the evening. We don't normally get this heat until August. It was 95+ last week. And rain? I've about had it with rain!

Well, we had rain already last week(and you know how popular rain is in Seattle ) but now its heating up, and its unusual for here too to be this hot, this early in the season..

Do you have A/C?

No air here! We are way above the amount of rain we normally get. There is major flooding in most areas. Basements are not at all dry. At the same time, it's hot and humid. What is going on with this crazy weather? Aside from the rain, I don't think our temps differ too much from your normal temps. Our average is in the 70's for June. We never hit 90's until August and that's fairly unusual. We didn't hit 90's at all last year. We also had a very snowy and wet winter - also above normal. I'm out of this hot house and into the yard. It's got to be cooler out there! My office is on the second floor where the majority of the heat is. I've gone through two tall glasses of ice water already!

85 degrees?? That's a cool day in Central CA! You probably don't need central air, a few electric fans should help.

I hear you. I'm in our 'dungeon' outside its still too hot! A/C just went out in the car too, figures! Oh! I remember humid hot from living in OK! Makes you want to take a shower every 10 minutes!

I don't know...... I think the unusual weather is all over the country.

Hey EAG! We have all kinds of fans, the box ones, the big oscillating one, all they do is blow hot air around, so I have to stay in the dungeon, thats where my computer is, obviously!

It's been 95-96 around here most of the last couple of weeks. And we've had the normal, short-lived thunderstorms/lightning that this area always get this time of year.

Don't know what they're called, NTS, but they have whole house fans that work wonderfully.

Two neighbors in CA had them and many people here do. It's usually installed in the ceiling in a central part of the house. When it's hot...you open a window/door and turn on the switch. Takes all the hot air out of the house.....then you turn the air conditioner on.

These fans are so powerful they'll take the shirt right off your back if you're standing under them when you 'flip the switch'. Really an energy saver according to those who have them. Might ask Mike to check into one of those.

Yeah, I'll tell him when he gets home... we did go and check out central air, the guy askes, how big is the house, and well, its just about 3000 sq ft, and so that central air would not only cost A LOT to install, it would cost tons to run!

I've think I've heard about those 'attic fans' is that what they are called? Yeah I'll tell him, I don't want to be in debt over my head with A/C

The difference is probably that the humidity here is at 90%+. They liken it to the tropics. You are wet the minute you step out the door and breathing can be difficult. The excessive heat and humidity are causing record rainfalls (like the rain forest) and that in turn is causing major flooding all over the area. A house in New Philadelphia, Ohio had it's basement wall cave in due to the excess moisture. Our grass is yellow from all the rain and our tree in the backyard is dropping yellow leaves. It's a mess.

On the bright side, we just had a heavy storm roll through here about 1/2 hour ago. It's cooler and we had the most wonderful rainbow because even though there was a heavy downpour with lightening, the sun was out.

Gosh ... 85 is almost a cool front to those of us in south FLA. We are having our usual sticky and icky weather down here at this time of year. Although, I must admit, we haven't had as much rain as in other years, which, although is scary for the fires, is certainly nice on the mosquito front.

Cheryl - I'm assuming that you run a couple dehuidifiers in your basement when it gets like this? If not - GET THEM!!! They are an important part of protecting resale value of your home as well as your health and your families.

Near the sea, I figure this will sound obvious but in case you hadnt thought of it:
close all the doors to rooms in your house if youre running an a/c in one room or two and put up curtains and/or shades to block the sun on the windows. Little things added up all together like that make a big difference with the heat. It is a pain to go in and out of rooms and remember to shut the doors all the time though... lol..

neroter12 yep, thats what I've been doing. The upstairs of course is the hottest. Still thinking about that attic fan, Mike wants to put one in.

Wow, we had a lightening show last night, sat on the deck for hours watching it on the east side and in the mountains. Its already 75 degrees and 9am (I know, thats nothing to some of you guys) but its an indicator that its going to be another hot day!

Stay cool, I'm going to try!

That is rather cool for South Florida this time of year. They say that after living with hot weather for a long time that eventually your blood thins out and you can handle it better. I still don't know what that means, but I think it makes as much sense as the dry heat of the desert not being uncomfortable. 110 degrees in Las Vegas is uncomfortable, trust me.
