BETTENDORF, Iowa (AP) - A couple has finally discovered what was happening to the yellow ribbons they were tying to the trees in their yard in support of their son and other troops in Iraq.
`The ribbons started to disappear. Every time it disappeared, I would hang a new one,'' said Bob Saskowski, who tied the ribbons with his wife, Alexis.
It went on for eight months. The last straw was when three ribbons disappeared in three days.
So Bob Saskowski appealed to his neighbors through a memo, asking them to talk to their teenagers about respect and patriotism and asked for their help.
`It indicated I needed their eyes to help them watch the trees,'' he said.
Neighbors responded by adding yellow ribbons to the trees in their yards.
`My husband and I were ticked,'' said neighbor Patty Kenyon. ``And we all decided if this person was going to pick on Bob, they can pick on all of us. And we literally put ribbons up and down the street.''
The ribbons kept disappearing, but only from the Saskowski yard.
`We thought someone had a vengeance against us, personally, because no one else's ribbons in the neighborhood was disappearing,'' Saskowski said.
Finally, the couple set up a video camera, focused on the yard. Six weeks later, they caught the culprit on tape. The ribbon was being shimmied slowly down the trunk.
At the base, the squirrel pushing the ribbon, bit through the ribbon and took off with it.
`We can laugh now,'' Saskowski said. ``Before, it was not funny.''
He says the squirrel was actually a good thing.
`And I named him Patriot because he brought our neighborhood together,'' Saskowski said.

Sorta like the threads here. Neither party understood the motivation or actions of the other party, yet the end result was synergistic. Conservatives stubbornly stay the course and liberals keep annoying them while lining their agendas.
God works in mysterious ways.

You know...the best way to defeat a liberal is to let them speak.

What a cute story.
Shows too how our assumptions [some mischievous person was doing this] are often not correct.
This story reminded me of the post-its commercial where their postit's kept disappearing. In the end the camera shows the inside of a hollowed out tree where the squirrel
had a hundred 'notes' he had made to himself. At least it was one commercial that was cute, rather than insulting our intelligence.

Nice story Fenix
The squirrel commercial I like is the auto insurance commercial where the squirrel causes a car to swerve off the road to miss him and then he goes over to his buddy and they slap hands, point at each other and chitter away in glee at what they caused.

I've seen that one too, yellowstone.
I enjoy commercials that make me laugh. Too many other serious things in life we have to deal with....so when we can enjoy a good laugh...here and there...it's certainly a welcome change that I appreciate and enjoy.

Actually, I've only seen you using smileys as bullets so I was really pleased to learn about your ability to appreciate humor.

As bullets, helen? Doesn't surprise me you'd take them in a negative way.
No, most of the time because I'm laughing at something someone has said - or that I've found humourous for funny. Other times to show my mood [through print] when I think there might be doubt about my 'tone'.
Smiling is a GOOD thing helen. Really - it won't crack your face. Joking - teasing with people is also part of life. I'm usually a pretty happy person....and you make me laugh a lot at some of the things you say - come up with - view things. Thank you.

Linda, I know a bullet when I see one.
Your thoughts on every issue are repulsive to me. Based on your constant focus on name calling and nasty insinuation I doubt that you are as happy as you claim to be.
Don't worry about the possibility that I might misunderstand your tone. I know your "tone" and it's nasty and unpleasant.
Helen
ed.to add...
With all that, you do protest too much, Linda. You must be trying to ressurect yourself but in your effort to do so you manage to insinuate that my comments are so funny to you...what I "come up with" that is.
Like the derivise laughter, maybe we will see fewer grinning bullets for awhile.

I think it was Linda who started that row. Should have left well enough alone.
Cute story fenix! Squirrels are funny creatures. My grandmother used to have one that sat on the windowsill everyday waiting for a handout. One day he fell down into the chimney, into the fireplace while it was lit, his tail caught fire, my grandfather promptly put it out and from then on she had a tail-less squirrel at the windowsill every day.

Why are you lefties so blinded by helen's attacks?

Must have been a liberal squirrel....objecting to the Partiotic symbolism of the Yellow Ribbon....
"The natural family is a man and woman bound in a lifelong covenant of marriage for the purposes of:
*the continuation of the human species,
*the rearing of children,
*the regulation of sexuality,
*the provision of mutual support and protection,
*the creation of an altruistic domestic economy, and
*the maintenance of bonds between the generations."

Excuse me but I was just wondering - When did yellow ribbons suddenly become a "Patriotic Symbol"
The whole thing started from a rather sappy love song about a guy getting out of prison and then became a polular symbol during the Iran hostage crisis and was adopted by family members of everything from service people to kidnapping victims. It is a symbol of love to those that are away. Although some that use it may also fall into your definition of patriotism the meaning of the yellow ribbon has nothing to do with patriotism and while I realise I have gone of on a tangent here, I'm just sick to death of everything suddenly being defined as patriotic or not patriotic. Good lord, next thing you know we are going to start seeing edorsements... drink Pepsi... the drink of real patriots.......
Blaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Fenix, what's your point? You are sooooo easy.

*the rearing of children,
*the regulation of sexuality,
*the provision of mutual support and protection,
