Kids in Florida like to dangle by meat hooks

MIAMI - Law enforcement officials in the Florida Keys are mystified by a bizarre new pastime -- young people dangling themselves from meat hooks on a popular sandbar.
A U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman said today that the Monroe County sheriff's office and Coast Guard were called on July 12 to the sandbar off Whale Harbor in Islamorada where locals say wild behavior is becoming a tradition.
They found that five young people had erected a bamboo tripod and hung meat hooks from it. A young woman, her feet brushing the surface of the shallow water, dangled from the frame, hooks embedded firmly in her shoulders.
According to a Coast Guard video, she did not seem to mind the hooks.
Lt. Tom Brazil of the Coast Guard told the Key West Citizen newspaper that a young man, who also had hooks embedded in his heavily pierced and tattooed skin, assured him the group was "just enjoying the afternoon."
A Coast Guard spokeswoman in Miami said the group had clearly done this before and intended to post photos of themselves on a Web site dedicated to "body modification" -- the ritualistic piercing of the body.
"It looked like a daily routine for them," she said, adding that the hooks had been inserted in the skin in a professional manner and had drawn very little blood."
"As long as they weren't creating any kind of ruckus or riot within a crowd, they really weren't breaking any laws."
The Coast Guard passed the video on to federal justice authorities but no further action will be taken.

I have seen people pierce themselves with "rings" strategically placed on their bdy and hang themselves on hooks through the rings. But this sounds like they were directly on the hooks.

But now that I reread the article, you COULD have posted it without the inflammatory political subject.
This has nothing to do with Liberalism as far as I can tell. Unless maybe they were protesting whaling or something, which certainly is not made clear.
Not EVERY posting here has to be about politics. It really is getting old fast.

It seems that each generation tries to outdo the previous one in bizarre behavior. In the future it will probably be hip to amputate ears, noses, limbs, etc.

We have regular customers in our mid-century store who do things like this. One is a body piercer. The nicest guy. Really friendly. His parents are... very conservative Republicans. His official job title is "Art Terrorist". I'm sure all of you would find that amusing. He is covered in tatoos has tons of body piercings. His latest project is making velvet prints of his pierced penis with the ring surrounded by a girls tongue who had it split to look like a serpent. Interesting to say the least. Ironically, he collects high end Heywood Wakefield Mid-Century furniture and rides a hip vintage bike.
I love the fact that this earth consists of unusual people. It makes life that much more interesting.
As my bumper sticker on the back of my car reads, "Keep Portland Wierd!"

I'd have a very hard time believing any conservative [be they dems or reps] parents would see all these body piercings, especially the shoulder hooks and not have enormous concern about their child's mental state. And that they would not take action to find out why they're making these choices to destroy they bodies at such an early age.
I've read some do this because they enjoy the experience of 'pain'. It somehow stimulates them sexually.
My guess is they're probably using drugs...either way...they need some serious adult supervision.

Replay, do you understand the meaning of question marks?
It would be interesting to hear in your own words why you believe these children have liberal parents.
The children of Conservative parents I know have enough self respect for themselves not to indulge in self mutilation or have any body piercings ("I.E." nose rings, pierced tongue's, navels or whatever/where ever). Though pierced ear lobes are prevalent I can't say that about the children of liberals I know.
Thus the equation from my point of view.

Bear, maybe conservation christian children do not have any such piercings.
But you better turn on MTV or one of the reality shows if you think all these kids are from poor liberal households! How many middle of the roader liberal kids get to go to palm beach for summer break, or all the junk they are pushing on the kids? The ones that do go are probably not the sons and daughters of bus drivers, etc.

My neighbors had an issue like this with their daughter. They voted in a liberal fashion...but were not liberal in their thinking when it came to their daughter doing permanent damage to herself...ie: piercing, tattooing, ...hooks never really came up. And they weren't religious...just concerned parents who didn't find *all* methods of acting out acceptable nor okay.

Well, in my estimation they are all doing it. Body art, body fashion, they call it. Its the trend of the times. Some parents object, some do not. And its probably not soley based on political affiliation. But I do know when I see these kids "partying" at Palm Beach, really dont think their parents are middle class and this is what most of the kids aspire to be. "Cool, dude, ya know?"

My son is the child of liberal parents. He knows, in no uncertain terms, that he can get a tatoo, or a piercing anywhere he wants, or go hang on meathooks the moment he no longer lives on this ranch and is fully paying his own way in the world. Until then, it ain't gonna happen.

If you are interested in self mutilation I suggest attending Burning Man or visit their site online.
Not my cup of tea however but I know quite a few men and women who have gone into body art. Some of it is interesting but I don't find it a turn on but if it floats their boat it's ok with me.
