I wonder if food cravings are meaningful?

For two days I have had a terrible craving for black licorice!! So bad.. that I had to drive to the store and buy a bag of black twizzlers this afternoon.. now.. I am not a big candy or sweet eater.. so this seemed bizarre to me..
I read somewhere that cravings may be the body's way of telling you that you are lacking something... like iron..for instance.

I wonder if any of you have had such food cravings.. other than pregnancy related... and if you have any thoughts on the subject..

Licorice is a laxative that cleans out your digestive track. Maybe your body's trying to tell you you need a good purging.

have you had licorise before??The body does remember what it ate.
i am not a milk drinker, but when i fractured my ankle, the first thing i did in the hospital was to drink milk,i kept drinking 3 tall glasses of milk everyday until they removed my cast.
afterwards,i go back to my old habits.
I know women who are on low fat or no fat diet, before their period, they will eat fat and salty food such as spam, ham and pizza.some even have pigfeet.

Stop.. I have eaten it before when I was a kid.. but haven't had any for years..
Funny because black licorice isn't really sweet.. or especially appealing either..
That's why I thought maybe my body was craving something that it is lacking...
I didn't think about it being a laxative though.. I may be in big trouble.. LOL..mm

Maggie, it could also be a sign of low blood sugar. Do you eat properly?

MAGGIE, did you ever try black licorice that stores like GNC sells? I can't remember its name but the box has Panda Bears on it. It the real thing tastes like the licorice of old like 50 years ago.

Maggie, I think black licorice reminds you of something... that you feel a need to recapture...and right now! lol. Hows that for amateur psychology? haha.
Or maybe, are you having some anxiety about the democrat convention? Dont sweat it, its gonna be fine!!

Kraft, if it was just LBS - any sweet would do...dont you think?

I get killer cravings for chocolate and pizza. I want chocolate especially after eating spaghetti. They say your body craves what it needs. I'm sooooo glad mine needs chocolate!

I have strong cravings for beer every so often. I guess my body is telling me that I need some vitamin B.

I love licorice, one of my sore spots:

"Black licorice" is redundant. Licorice is black. There is no reason to call it "black licorice", there isn't any other kind.

A real good licorice is NIBS, little pieces made from real licorice root flavor, not the fake or anise flavored stuff you usually find. Switzer's is another good one.

You're right, Prof. That red crap is not licorice!

I am lucky to have a Dutch marketnot too far from my house which stocks about 30 different types of licorice. I go there every once in a while and stock up. The one that I am careful about eating too much of is the "triple salty" one. Whoa!

Well.. I just did a search on licorice and Holy Smokes.. it is known as a complete body tonic... beneficial for everything from athletes foot to ulcers it seems!
Here is just one small paragraph on some of its benefits..

Beneficial for hypoglycemia, bronchitis, colitis, diverticulitis, gastritis, stress, colds, nausea, and inflammation. Cleanses the colon, promotes adrenal gland function, decreases muscle or skeletal spasms, and increases the fluidity of mucus from the lungs and bronchial tubes. Has estrogen-like hormone effects; changes the voice. Studies show licorice root stimulates the production of interferon. Warning: Do not use if you have high blood pressure."

I am surprised that so many like it.. I think it is an acquired taste... Prof.. what do you call the red licorice? Is it really licorice at all? Yes, I prefer the NIBS too.

Bigpeepa.. I am not sure if I have ever seen that kind.. but I remember as a young child.. my grandfather used to eat very strong licorice in the shape of fat cigars..with red candy ends to look like the lit end.. that stuff would grow hair on your chest!!LOL Oh..now you've got me going.. I remember little black babies.. not politically correct for sure but that's what they were called..LOL

And nero and Kraft you both could be right.. I have low blood sugar and low blood pressure and have a type A personality so I stay stressed.. and it seems that licorice is beneficial for these conditions too..

I had better watch it or I will gain weight though...anything that tastes good has to be fattening!

Actually Maggie, licorice is, among all the candies, the least caloric and carbs, if I am not mistaken. So eat, enjoy. Unstress!!

Licorice IS good for a lot of problems, but can also have bad side effects if you eat too much of it. It can affect testosterone levels in men, cause premature delivery in pregnant women, cause high blood pressure, water & sodium retention, lethargy, muscle pain, cardiac arrhythmias, low blood potassium, and changes in kidney function.

We're talking REAL licorice candy here, not the artificial stuff that's usually for sale in most stores. Take a look at the ingredients, in most cases even the black licorice is artificial, being made from corn syrup.

And you really have to be socking it away to get these side effects, but I wouldn't just gobble real licorice down asifit were, welll, candy.

maggie, red "licorice" contains no licorice. If you look on a package of the stuff, it isn't even called red licorice. It'll say red ropes or red twists or twizzlers or something, but not licorice. nasty. yechh...

Sometimes liquorice just ‘doesn’t cut the mustard’.
Apparently pregnant women have been known to crave for things ‘inedible’, even rubber from tyres. mmmmmm!

I crave for cigarettes(smoke).

I like Dutch liquorice too bunni, but I think it's an aquired taste.
For those that haven't had 'zaltedrops'(sp?)-
at first it seemed to me, to be like liquorice that's been stored in a soiled sock would taste.
