I'd like to see us less divided than we are. Present a united front to the world. Not reality of the current situation though.
I too am looking forward to kerry's speech tonight. In his recently stated positions he's coming more to the center....at least wanting to appear more centralist rather than the ultra-liberal his voting record proves him to be.
It will be interesting to see how he'll work [in words] to appease both the more moderate dems while at the same time working to keep the 'dean' - [the angry leftist' supporters] still believing he hasn't flip-flopped on the 'hard left' issues he has always represented.
I just love this more 'positive' face they're putting on during this convention. Just wondering when the mask will come off again and we'll be back to the 'vein poppers' screaming 'he betrayed his country - he lied - he... he... he....' My bet is it won't take long after the convention.

Wasn't it Bush that said he would unite everyone if he were elected? Not only was he not elected, he didn't do anything to unite the country. Hard to believe, eh?

Sure he was elected....and I posted proof of that several times.
And I would agree he was a little naive in thinking he could unite with those stubborn/unflexible ultra-liberals when he entered office.

I don't know bear....but I've been led to believe, from what I've read, that we're FINALLY going to hear what HE plans to do IF elected. Tather than just more of how he has been running his campaign up until this point.....only bashing what has been done....not stating what he'd do that would make a difference of any sort.
We'll see.

My opinion, is nobody really WANTS to be united. If they did, there is room for compromise. But I dont think the republicans will ever see clear of the gay marriage issue, for one. And I dont know that the democrats will ever think building up a solid military base is worth funding. <?>
I think Kerry will fund the military and I think he will build it up judging from Edwards' speech last night. It's good that he's a former military man because he understands what the soldiers need in time of war, unlike Bush who played tootsies during the war. I liked what Edwards had to say. I also liked what Sharpton had to say. Yes, we are divided. More now than at any other time except the Civil War. It's not anything to be proud of. There's more to it than building the military, though. Human issues here at home, long neglected, need urgent addressing. As was said last night, it's been almost three years since 911 and how is the US any safer now than it was then? Exactly what has been done here to safeguard us? Not much, IMO. Our nuclear plants and water supplies are still vulnerable. Our ports are not secure and neither are our borders. How many illegal aliens are still crossing over into this country?
I think Kerry and Edwards will move quickly to secure this country.

Cheryl, I know. Theres def more to it than military, that was just one example. But I really think it starts at the top, this whole unity idea and I have doubts and reservations any of the political people in congress or government really are inclined to do that. There is a lot at stake within the 'parties' to keep the country and the monies divided. Maybe we've got a new century, generation, and a new approach to take? That WOULD be hopeful.

Oh god...I'd be laughing if that statement weren't so very, very sad. It's good that he's a former military man because he understands what the soldiers need in time of war.
No, we sure don't need a vet who comes home and shows what a traitor to his country he can become.
He voted AGAINST giving them what they needed in Iraq, as did Edwards. He's voted for spending less on our intelligence agencies....then turns on them for not providing the correct information.....lying to us via the information they gave this President.
He tried to avoid being sent where the fighting was in VN - just didn't work out the way he'd hope....but it only took him four months to figure a way to get out of VN and back to safety.
Yea....brave soul he was. Then video tapes his 'fighting' actions to have for his future political ambitions.
Everything kerry has ever done has been ONLY to lead to this time in his political life - and there's been many who know him as saying just that.

His complete military record in on his web site for all to see. Want to know Bush's? Read this if you have the courage: http://www.awolbush.com/
Cuts? Votes against? Read on, Linda:
Before George W. Bush's political operatives started pounding on John Kerry for voting against certain weapons systems during his years in the Senate, they should have taken a look at this quotation:
After completing 20 planes for which we have begun procurement, we will shut down further production of the B-2 bomber. We will cancel the small ICBM program. We will cease production of new warheads for our sea-based ballistic missiles. We will stop all new production of the Peacekeeper [MX] missile. And we will not purchase any more advanced cruise missiles. The reductions I have approved will save us an additional $50 billion over the next five years. By 1997 we will have cut defense by 30 percent since I took office.
The speaker was President George H.W. Bush, the current president's father, in his State of the Union address on Jan. 28, 1992.
They should also have looked up some testimony by Dick Cheney, the first President Bush's secretary of defense (and now vice president), three days later, boasting of similar slashings before the Senate Armed Services Committee:
Overall, since I've been Secretary, we will have taken the five-year defense program down by well over $300 billion. That's the peace dividend. And now we're adding to that another $50 billion of so-called peace dividend.
Cheney proceeded to lay into the then-Democratically controlled Congress for refusing to cut more weapons systems.
Congress has let me cancel a few programs. But you've squabbled and sometimes bickered and horse-traded and ended up forcing me to spend money on weapons that don't fill a vital need in these times of tight budgets and new requirements. You've directed me to buy more M-1s, F-14s, and F-16sall great systems but we have enough of them.
The Republican operatives might also have noticed Gen. Colin Powell, then chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at the same hearings, testifying about plans to cut Army divisions by one-third, Navy aircraft carriers by one-fifth, and active armed forces by half a million men and women, to say noting of "major reductions" in fighter wings and strategic bombers.
Granted, these reductions were made in the wake of the Soviet Union's dissolution and the Cold War's demise. But that's just the point: Proposed cuts must be examined in context. A vote against a particular weapons system doesn't necessarily indicate indifference toward national defense.
Looking at the weapons that the RNC says Kerry voted to cut, a good case could be made, certainly at the time, that some of them (the B-2 bomber and President Reagan's "Star Wars" missile-defense program) should have been cut. As for the others (the M-1 tank and the F-14, F-15, and F-16 fighter planes, among others), Kerry didn't really vote to cut them.
Tsk, tsk, Linda. I thought you were better at researching.

cheryl....I love how you selectively point out only certain parts of his liberal, anti-military voting record. I KNOW what I'm talking about and I've posted it over and over. You just don't want to see the truth.
If you think that I'd ever agree with your taken on anything....but especially our military....when you supported a progressive/socialist who has never been pro-military you'd be seriously mistaken.

Cheryl you can point out all the facts to Linda about Kerry's voting record in regards to the war. She will never believe you so you are just wasting your time. Both Bush and Cheney have also voted against military funding at various times as well.
Everything is listed on factcheck.org but Linda still selectively believes what she wants.

Thanks, Helen and logansdad. Factcheck.org is really a great site! Well, back to watching the DNC. Wasn't Madeline Albright terrific? What a gal!
BTW, I think both you and logansdad might be interested in this article about her. Says what we've been thinking all along:
Albright thinks Bush hiding bin Laden
Tells Fox News' Kondracke she suspects political dirty tricks
