I have ornithophobia! As far back as I can remember I have been terrified of birds.
Any kind of bird or anything with feathers..
this is a tough one.. because no matter where you go.. there are always birds.

I was recently at a park and decided to walk down toward the lake.. I didn't notice that there were swans until they came running toward me, obviously looking for food... I was so panicked... but I just squeezed my eyes shut and froze.. I couldn't run from them...but I thought I was going to pass out! luckily I was with a friend and she was able to get me out of there... I still feel the fright as I type this.. I have no idea where Phobias come from or why some people have them, do you? Maggie

Heights! I just cannot stand to be anyplace high and then look down. Going to Windsor you have the choice of going over a very high and very long bridge or taking a tunnel under the water. I chose the tunnel.

mice. When I first started using a computer I had a hard time just saying the word mouse!

I recently heard Dr. Phil say there is only one fear. It's the fear of losing control. (Don't blame me. He said it. )

I live in an OLD house in the inner-city so I'm used to mice. In fact, they are so bold around here that they will saunter across the living room, look right at you and just merrily continue on. Just like they belong here! Fortunately, the problem is being taken care of by the onslaught of stray cats in the neighborhood.

I have a few fears, but I they are not debilitating in any way, so I don't think they classify as a phobia.

I absolutely do not like cockroaches! Especially those giant ones that were about 4 inches long!

I fear having a long, slow, painful death.

I fear my second husband's retribution for putting him in prison. (It's been over 11 years....but it's still there.) I do still dream about him shooting my husband, my children and myself...me last.

I can't imagine living with such fear..!! MM

I once served on a jury for a murder trial. A few coworkers used to tease me that the murderer would get out and kill all of the jurors. That thought did frighten me a bit. But it's probably nothing compared to your fear, Terry Ann.

He did get out a few years ago, when last I heard he still lived in the same general area I do - but I wouldn't even know him if I saw him now.

Cheryl, I've always thought I would like you if I really knew you - not just in cyberspace - but as long as you stay in "mouse country" you can rest assured I will not be looking you up for a visit.

Reminds me I went to a coworkers house once to buy some antiques. After I got there she mentioned that she had mice - I guess it's not a debilitating fear - but I was definitely anxious to leave after she told me that!. She lived in an old house too - I guess it comes with the territory.

We're all right. It's been a long time past and it's down to just a couple times a year. The kids are grown now and pretty well adjusted, all things considered. Just one of the things in my life that made me the wormbitch before you today...(Just checking to see if wormbitch will fly.)

Just kinda got on a roll when I was trying to figure out what I've ever been afraid of.

Oh yeah...remember the spider thread? I don't like cane spiders either.

Clown faces. I cannot look at a clown. I've never thought they were funny, either.

LOL! Fortunately, we no longer have mice. We now have stray cats! My backyard is pretty country for the city and the cats love it back there (so does the one raccoon, possum and skunk we have in the neighborhood). However, being here has cured any fear I ever had of them. I caught on in a humane trap once when my son was young. We lived in the country then. He cried and cried until I managed to get the thing loose and set it free! Now, he can't stand them.

OMG TerryAnn! that is awful, but at least he is in prison!

I had *almost* similiar thing with my ex, the father of my 2 girls. We fought, yeah he was abusive, but the day I went to leave with the girls, he did take his gun out, he first went out into the pasture and started shooting wildly at the horses and cows, didn't hit one, but then went after the dogs, got one, then came in the house where I thought the 3 of us were dead. He pointed it and said, I outta shoot you now, but he just up and took off. I left right then and there.
Haven't seen hide nor hair, hear things once in awhile, he married 4 x after me, has a ton of kids, his last wife did pass away. I don't want to see him, and he can stay in OK for good

Roadsmith,

I used to work with a woman who was afraid of clowns and balloons. Once another coworker chased her with a balloon, she ran and screamed terribly, like somebody was chasing her with a snake or something similar.

Cheryl,

Do you live in the Metro Detroit area? You mention Windsor, Ontario and the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel. What's in Windsor besides the casino?

Some people have triskaidekaphobia. (tris·kai·dek·a·pho·bi·a) This is an abnormal fear of the number 13. However, here some might dread the number 12.

I live in Cleveland, Ohio. We go through Detroit to get to Windsor. We like the casinos there (Casino Windsor) although we haven't gone for awhile.

I dunno about "triskaidekaphobia," but I go to Taco Bell about once a week. I usually order the same thing every time, and the total comes to $6.66

The girl at the window calls her manager over to take my money and give me change every single time. She's afraid to handle the transaction.

$6.66

I know what that value represents, but sheesh, sometimes a number is just a number.

Personally, I used to be afraid of heights & water, but worked hard to get over both. About the only thing I won't go near is snakes. I don't have any plans to work through that one either!

Do you know that Detroit has three casinos? All pretty nice too.

I think that in clinical psychology a phobia is defined as an "irrational" fear. In that respect your fear certainly qualifies. Lol

HA! I am glad that I'm not the only cuckoo on this board.. LOL.. but Profe!!!!! really spray cheese, miracle whip, cool whip!!Hee Hee...
And Replay... you devil you... I bet you just go there every week to frighten that poor cashier.. don't you.. LOL

Then there are a couple of you with Genuine Fears.. retaliation from Ex's and we all fear the number 12 here! (good one Yeager!)

Now, snakes, height, water, clowns, mice, rodents and insects I have heard of... but I was kind of hoping someone else had a phobia of birds like I do...all joking aside.. it really is dibilitating...

Just last month I was riding on an open horse drawn wagon... on a tour of a safari type of zoo.. where the animals come right up to the wagon and you can feed them face to face...

well all was well until those
@$#%#$!!! big emu's and ostriches came over and stuck their huge heads and necks into the wagon trying to get the food from the buckets! I just about had a stroke! I couldn't help it.. I just flew (no pun intended) up to the front of the wagon and practically threw myself on the lap of the driver... She was surprised to say the least with my reaction... kind of embarrassing in front of a group of 6 year old kids.. wouldn't you say...
It is an irrational fear.. I just can't help it... mm

My mother is afraid of birds too. She says when she was little she was chased & bitten by a duck or a goose.

When my parents moved to their current home, there was a big birdhouse way back on the back part of the property. It was 20 feet in the air on a pole and you couldn't even see it from the house for the trees. She made my dad cut it down!

My aunt has some driving relating fears that probably would be considered phobias. For years she worked at a place that would have taken her about 20 minutes to drive by interstate. But since she's afraid of driving on the interstate she took some weird out of the way country road trip that took her about 40 minutes. Once she got about 10 minutes away from home and there was a roadblock - the police made everyone turn around. She drove the 30 minutes back to her office and then called one of her daughters to come get her - because by then it was dark and she's afraid to drive in the dark.

There were many times during the years that some odd little thing happened and she would just pull off the at the nearest public building - store, etc and call and cab to take her the rest of the way.

Once I road with her as she was taking her oldest daughter back to college after Christmas break. It started to snow. That's right. She's definitely afraid of driving in snow. I told her I'd drive. She cut the wheel hard to the right and plowed us straight into a snowbank.

On the way back it was a bad snowstorm. I drove. She cried.

Sometimes our family just sits around and recalls some of the nutty things she has done over the years. As long as she's not in a car at the time she laughs right along with us - after all some of these stories we wouldn't even know about if she hadn't told them to us.

By the way, many family members have suggested that she get counseling. But she's "afraid" that someone might see her car parked at the mental health clinic.

Pictures that look at me. All my life I have hated having photographs that seem to look directly at you. Really. I still turn over or around books, magazines, boxes, cans--whatever--if they have a picture that looks at me.

Imagine them naked, without their feathers!

Take away the trees
and the birds'll have to sit upon the ground.
(Hum)
Take away their wings
and the birds'll have to walk to get around.
Take away the birdbaths
and dirty birds will soon be everywhere.
Take away their feathers
and the birds will walk around in underwear.
Take away their (whistle)
and the birds'll have to whisper when they sing.
(Chirp chirp!)
Take away their common sense
and they'll be heading southward in the spring.

Oh, remember me, my darling when spring is in the air,
And the bald headed birds are whispering everywhere.
When you see them walking southward in their dirty underwear,
That's the Tennessee Bird Walk.

How about some trees
so the birds won't have to sit upon the ground?
(Hum)
And how about some wings
so the birds won't have to walk to get around?
And how about a birdbath or two
so the birds will all be clean?
And how about some feathers
so their underwear no longer will be seen?
How about a little (whistle)
so the birds won't have to whisper when they sing?
(Chirp chirp!)
And how about some common sense,
So they won't be blocking traffic in the spring?

Oh, remember me, my darling when spring is in the air
And the bald headed birds are whispering everywhere
When you see them walking southward in their dirty underwear
That's the Tennessee Bird Walk (Chirp chirp!)

I used to have a phobia about spiders and heights... I forced my self to pick up spiders any chance I got instead of killing them and placing them outside...

Also forced my self to go to high places... it was not fun or easy but it worked for me...
