Woman Chows 38 Lobsters in Eating Contest

1 hour, 1 minute ago

By SARA LEITCH, Associated Press Writer

KENNEBUNK, Maine - America's top speed-eater wolfed down 38 lobsters in 12 minutes Saturday to win the World Lobster Eating Contest.

Sonya Thomas, of Alexandria, Va., won $500 and a trophy belt for her efforts, consuming 9.76 pounds of lobster meat.

Each contestant had a partner cracking the shells and pulling out the meat. Eleven competitors ate as many lobsters as they could in a 12-minute period, devouring a total of 300 pounds.

"I have a natural ability because of my stomach capacity," said Thomas, who weighs a mere 105 pounds. "I could eat more, but something else — not a lobster."

The competition, only in its second year, sought to elevate Maine into the big leagues of competitive eating, alongside New York's Coney Island with its Nathan's Famous hot dogs and New Orleans with its oysters.

This year's competition at the Pilot House Grill & Boatyard was sanctioned by the International Federation of Competitive Eating, which ranked Thomas the country's top speed-eater.

Thomas was coming off a baked bean victory days before in Indiana, where she consumed 8.4 pounds of beans with pork in 2 minutes and 47 seconds. She also holds records for hard-boiled eggs.

Naw Snowy. He's trying to imagine me as an overweight whale with hair on my back or something so he doesn't feel too guilty when he insults me.

Twelve, nothing you could ever say will make me stop loving you.

Fuzzy math:

11 contestants less than 10 pounds consumed by the winner for a total of 300 pounds.

It dosn't add up.

More of twelves right wing republican lies.

Bigshot rancher to Tom Horn : "How do you like the lobster?"

Tom Horn: " I don't know, I never ate a bug that big before"

38 lobsters for a total of 9.76 pounds. With a four ounce lobster no wonder she has to eat that many!

I doubt the reporter was there, probably wrote the story off the news release or based on a local news item.

I always thought lobsters that smalll were longastines of crayfish.

The other night at a local all you can eat buffet I saw a Samoan dude eat way more than that many crayfish.

I was too busy with the all you can eat sushi to keep count and I've never liked crayfish anyway.

I will tell you one thing for darn sure. Any Woman that can eat that many beans in that short a time, I won't quarrel with, scare me.
