See, you didn't get rid of me after all! Vacation was great and as is usually the case, not long enough. We camped at a great place called Mohican Wilderness (and I do mean wilderness), which is about 10 miles southeast of Loudonville, Oh. We were the only ones there so it was very quiet and relaxing. Most of the time, I didn't even know what time it was. The tent was pitched right next to the river so you could hear the water all night. That was great if you remembered to visit the latrine prior to calling it a night!! LOL! Visiting it after dark required much bravery because it was set back in the woods!
We did have a mischievous raccoon we named Rocky. The second night there he managed to get into the bag on Ken's bike and eat an entire sealed bag of trail mix. Last night, we had taken the canopy down and Ken bungied the cooler shut. Ha! Rocky managed to get the bungee cord off without chewing it, open the cooler and devour: one chocolate cream pie, a bag of grapes (carefully removing each one from the stems), a bag of peaches, three chicken-ka-bobs, an entire package of bologna AND salami. He didn't even leave a big mess! LOL, he actually did us a favor because we didn't want to haul all the food back. I'm willing to bet his stomach is a bit upset today. We were visited by deer, two female cardinals, a woodpecker and other assorted woodland creatures. The noisiest of all were all the frogs at night.
We really didn't do much other than just relax and enjoy the quiet. We did ride the bikes down the street to see the Chapman log cabin (Johnny Appleseed) and an old 1820's cemetery. All but 4 of the 25 or so buried there were children. To get there you had to hike up a large hill and through a soybean field and then back into the woods.
What amazed me most were the different sounds at different times of the day. Mohican is home to many rare and endangered birds. At night you had the crickets and frogs and the barn owls and during the day you had the other birds including hawks. It was never totally quiet. But, those noises are strangely relaxing.
Well, gotta catch up on the threads. You guys and gals have been busy!!

Hey Cheryl! Glad you're back, safe & sound.
That's why I live in the country - there's nothing like it on a summer night at around 2:00 in the morning - almost makes you want to run around naked.

I would have stayed a little longer, but due to the piss-poor economy I didn't have enough money to.

Oh, Helen, I'll never look at camping the same way again. LOL!!
It was good to get away for a couple of days, but it's oh so great to be home. Primitive camping is a lot of work and if you can't stand to be without luxuries, it's not for you. What I missed most in the 3 days I was gone was my coffee maker! Making coffee was a real production. I was the one who got up the earliest so I had to get the cooking fire going. Then, you have to wait for the coffee to perk. It's a royal PIA. I want coffee NOW when I get up in the morning. Oh, I also missed flushing toilets and a shower that didn't take 10 minutes to get to a tolerable temperature. It got down into the 40's Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights so taking a shower first thing in the morning was a real eye opener! It was a real scream - literally! Three nights so far is my limit for primitive camping.
Now, in October I generally take a week and rent a cabin - with a bathroom!

I would worry about that greeting from twelvepole, Cheryl. When twelvepole calls you sweetie, you are doing something wrong.
