Zell Miller is an anatomical wonder in that his tongue is hinged in the middle, it seems.

I have been watching news clips on him tonight--boy, did he lay into Kerry big-time, garnering applause for his efforts at the RNC. One would almost think Kerry is the Devil incarnate to hear him speak. But just a few short years ago, Miller was telling a very different story.

Zell Miller's 2001 Speech on John Kerry

By Sen. Zell Miller, AlterNet. Posted September 2, 2004.

Georgia "Democratic" Senator Zell Miller on John Kerry at the Republican convention Wednesday night:

"For more than twenty years, on every one of the great issues of freedom and security, John Kerry has been more wrong, more weak and more wobbly than any other national figure. As a war protestor, Kerry blamed our military. As a Senator, he voted to weaken our military. And nothing shows that more sadly and more clearly than his vote this year to deny protective armor for our troops in harms way, far-away."

Editor's note: While the press is busy with oohs and aahs over Sen. Miller's fiery attacks on John Kerry's military votes in the Senate, it's important to remember that three years ago, Miller introduced Kerry at a dinner in his home state of Georgia, saying that Kerry was "an authentic national hero" who had "strengthened our military." The text of Miller's 2001 speech follows.

Democratic Party of Georgia's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner

– March 1, 2001

Zell Miller:

It is good to be back in Georgia and to be with you. I have been coming to these dinners since the 1950s, and have missed very few.

I'm proud to be Georgia's junior senator and I'm honored to serve with Max Cleland, who is as loved and respected as anyone in that body. One of our very highest priorities must be to make sure this man is re-elected in 2002 so he can continue to serve this state and nation.

I continue to be impressed with all that Governor Barnes and Lieutenant Governor Taylor and the Speaker and the General Assembly are getting done over at the Gold Dome. Georgia is fortunate to have this kind of leadership.

My job tonight is an easy one: to present to you one of this nation's authentic heroes, one of this party's best-known and greatest leaders – and a good friend.

He was once a lieutenant governor – but he didn't stay in that office 16 years, like someone else I know. It just took two years before the people of Massachusetts moved him into the United States Senate in 1984.

In his 16 years in the Senate, John Kerry has fought against government waste and worked hard to bring some accountability to Washington.

Early in his Senate career in 1986, John signed on to the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Deficit Reduction Bill, and he fought for balanced budgets before it was considered politically correct for Democrats to do so.

John has worked to strengthen our military, reform public education, boost the economy and protect the environment. Business Week magazine named him one of the top pro-technology legislators and made him a member of its "Digital Dozen."

John was re-elected in 1990 and again in 1996 – when he defeated popular Republican Governor William Weld in the most closely watched Senate race in the country.

John is a graduate of Yale University and was a gunboat officer in the Navy. He received a Silver Star, Bronze Star and three awards of the Purple Heart for combat duty in Vietnam. He later co-founded the Vietnam Veterans of America.

He is married to Teresa Heinz and they have two daughters.

As many of you know, I have great affection – some might say an obsession – for my two Labrador retrievers, Gus and Woodrow. It turns out John is a fellow dog lover, too, and he better be. His German Shepherd, Kim, is about to have puppies. And I just want him to know... Gus and Woodrow had nothing to do with that.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome Senator John Kerry.

Yes, Zell Miller is certainly a credible person.

No, twelve, you dolt, Kerry is not the only one to flip-flop.

EVERYBODY flip flops....the Republicans made it a crinme for Kerry to do so.

So now when the Republicans flip flop which they do frequently it will be pointed out!

Did your bush decide if we can or can't win the war on terror?

bunni - This is how I see this issue.

If you'll notice, Zell made these statements in March 2001...obviously before 9-11. He's a democrat so naturally he'd be saying good things while introducing one from his own party. Puffing up kerrys war record and all.

But then....after 9-11 he's had time to see the difference between President Bush's words and actions in dealing with the attacks on us and what kerry has been saying. Also the news from the Swift Boat Vets has been out, in a way, since May of this year.

Taking all those things into consideration he has made the decision that his own party is not the party it used to be when it comes to handling threats to our Nation....and has decided that President Bush IS willing to do whatever it takes to defend us.

That's called a 'change of heart' because the circumstances have changed....not a flip-flop where the issue has remained the same but the position has changed.

boy did he lay into kerry big time.

Yes, he did and it was well deserved too.

If memory serves me....his anger at kerry started right after the vote for the $87 billion dollars came about. I remember reading he was FURIOUS kerry have voted againt funding our troops. As a Marine that alone probably hit him more than it might have the average person.

You don't send troops off to war and then vote against funding them....NO matter the reason.

Also , has Ed Koch (D) ever said anything good about kerry in the past? Cause if he has he too has decided to support President Bush's re-election. And I know the two of them disagree on about every domestic issue there is.

But he too has made the decision that this President is the best man to protect this nation. He knows if we go 'soft' on terrorism....wait only until we're attacked again [when kerry has stated he'll be SURE to defend us then]....the domestic issues and how they are decided aren't really going to matter much if at all.

THE number 1 issue in this election is defending this Nation...going after the terrorists on their OWN ground....and that's the ONLY reason Ed Koch supports this President's re-election.

Koch and Miller have our Nations best interest at heart and have decided kerry's not the man for the job.

Ever thought of comparing the speech of the Democrat's keynote speaker, Barrak Obama, and the speech of Zig-Zag Miller.

Honestly , who would you vote for?

I have not watched much of either convention. I heard Zell Miller yelling out in the living room and went to see who it was. It was rivoting. Zell Miller told us what he thought. I was wondering where the Republicans had been hiding this guy all this time. Surprise! He's a Democrat, or, I have a sneaking suspicion, was. Wow! What an impassioned orator! He tore it up! Don't let Zell get aholt of the football, then we gotta fix it.

Senator Miller, I now know who Zell Miller is, and where he stands. He should be our ambassador to the United Nations. Let Zell give 'em Hell. Twon't matter iffen they don't parley vous, ya know? They'll understand his position.
