The upcoming debates are obviously important whether you are on a neo-con or ultra-liberal or a moderate, or whatever.

Rumor has it that Bush will chicken out of at least one of the debates. In fact, we're taking wagers on it. Expect Bush to withdraw from the last debate.

Didn't he already back out of the third one.......or, I should say , "backed out" by our president Rove/Cheney.

Bush wants to cancel the second debate because of the town hall format. He doesn't want to answer questions that his handlers haven't screened.

Kerry should show up at Washington University anyway to answer those questions.

First presidential debate:
Thursday, September 30
University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL
Jim Lehrer

Vice presidential debate:
Tuesday, October 5
Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH
Gwen Ifill

Second presidential debate:
Friday, October 8
Washington University, St. Louis, MO
Charles Gibson

Third presidential debate:
Wednesday, October 13
Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ
Bob Schieffer

Bush Likely to Bow Out of 1 Debate

President Bush may skip one of the three debates that have been proposed by the Commission on Presidential Debates and accepted by Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), Republican officials said yesterday.

The officials said Bush's negotiating team plans to resist the middle debate, which was to be Oct. 8 in a town meeting format in the crucial state of Missouri.

What a miserable failure.

Personally I hope President Bush has the guts to go through with it but he's spent a lifetime chickening out and using others to think for him or do some of his dirty work for him.

If he does chicken out there are some who will be disappointed that they will miss an opportunity to see the candidates actually debate the issues.

Others will be relieved that he doesn’t get another chance to embarrass them.

Some will be disappointed that they have such a gutless wonder for a leader.

Others will be disappointed that they will miss the opportunity to view some possible comedy.

And some will just buy into any excuse given for his chickening out and will just grin and nod. Issues? What issues?

This isn't new. It was already stated last week or the beginning of this week that the President was only going to debate twice.

Remember they BOTH have to agree to how many and when the debates are scheduled. So it's not that he's 'backing out' as the dems would like it to appear. And it's already been mention he agreed to two.

This is from the NYT 9-5-04 ONLY to show how President Bush is the one who makes the decision IF and WHEN he will debate and HOW MANY times. It's not like it's automatically set up and President Bush is 'chickening out'? How funny.
-----------

The small group of undecided voters are, pollsters say, people who are not interested in politics, and thus not paying much attention to what is going on. What that means is that this election could end up being decided in the final days.

All of which is worth keeping in mind as Mr. Bush and Mr. Kerry head into the fall campaign. There are a few predictable Big Moments left that bear close attention. Leading the list are the debates. There will be two or three presidential debates, depending on how many Mr. Bush agrees to, and one vice-presidential debate. The debates are likely to draw far more viewers than either convention - and a lot more undecided voters.

Another clip from MSNBC today:

The debate about debates MSNBC's Tom Llamas reports Edwards huddled last night with advisors in Bangor, ME for debate prep, and spotted a hotel room reserved for Democratic domestic policy guru Bruce Reed

Perhaps to counter the Bush debate team's inclusion of all-purpose strategist/spokespeople Mary Matalin and Karen Hughes, the Kerry campaign announces today they're adding Mike McCurry to their team.

[i]The Washington Times says that while Bush met with lead negotiator James Baker yesterday, they "reached no decisions on where, when or how often the president will debate

... Kerry, campaign officials said...Bush spokesman Brian Jones said the president would have his work cut out for him against Mr. Kerry, whom Mr. Jones described as a skilled and proven debater."

A Kerry aide "responded by accusing the Bush camp of 'already playing the expectations game.  The president is a fantastic debater, and he has never lost a debate in his professional career,' she said."

Just a debate between Kerry and Bush. That is what a debate it. Kerry wants to change the rules, why? They need to stick to the issues and if questions are taken from the audience how does one know that that person isn't a plant from the other camp.

Kerry wants debates every week. But remember Bush has a job to do. Kerry doesn't, well yes he does but he doesn't seem to care about that. It's probably a good thing he is hanging on to that senate seat.

If what is coming out is true he has a lot of explaining to do. It is his campaign and he needs to straighten it out.

I personally would like Bush and Kerry to take part in a town hall format debate. If they know the issues that matter to the American people they should be able to defend their decisisons and answer OUR questions with no problems.

Bush is the one that is afraid of these types of debates because he does not know how to answer "the tough questions". He is still trying to comprehend the "Little Engine that Could".

Let's have a BBQ, Texas style, ROAST BUSH

No, that type of debate proves nothing and with the questions that would get asked, some cannot be answered just simply for security reasons...

I am surprised the kerry would agree to a townhall style... he has more to lose than the President... not answering swift boat veterans statements would more than likely be all he would get...

But then are you going to say no one would be allowed to ask about that? Then it wouldn't be a true townhall debate then would it?

Bush is a chicken. He will always be a chicken. He pulled strings to avoid Vietnam by joining the ANG, and yet couldn't even complete his duty to his country. Sure, he received an honorable discharge, but how much did that cost him? He has lied to Americans about his military record and covered up the fact he wasn't fit for duty and was suspended. The point is that Bush isn't fit to do anything but snort some coke and lie.
