From the article:
A California teacher has been barred by his school from giving students documents from American history that refer to God -- including the Declaration of Independence.
Steven Williams, a fifth-grade teacher at Stevens Creek School in the San Francisco Bay area suburb of Cupertino, sued for discrimination on Monday, claiming he had been singled out for censorship by principal Patricia Vidmar because he is a Christian.
"It's a fact of American history that our founders were religious men, and to hide this fact from young fifth-graders in the name of political correctness is outrageous and shameful," said Williams' attorney, Terry Thompson.

Yes, no surprise. This goes on all the time.
But I'm always thrilled when the person who's being singled out....files a suit of their own, like this teacher is doing. Most don't because of the cost and that's why the ACLU wins so many...just threatening their lawsuits make many give up right there. But the more that fight them....the more that are winning their cases.
One reason I give financial support to the ACLJ. They take many of these type of cases....where the fanatics and atheists pull this garbage.

Conservatives are bigoted small minded elitist jerks.
Oh I'm sorry... I thought this was ignorant sterotype thread....
As for the actual topic at hand... I despise religion in the schools but that does not mean that you ignore aspects of history because they involve referrences to religion. If that were the rule of thumb we'd have to remove any mention of war or for that matter, the reason that our nation exists.
Unfortunately I think that the litigious tendancies of our country has lent itself to some rather extreme over reaching on both ends of the spectrum.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Nonsense, Linda. You make it sound like it's the rule, rather than the very rare exception. I challenge you to document that it goes on all the time. If you can find more than a half dozen instances of something similar happening in the entire country in the last year I'll eat my hat.

When they removed the "Ten Commandments" from the courthouse, I was appalled! Other than one commandment- "Thou shalt put the Lord God above all others", you would think a courthouse is the PERFECT place for the other nine! If you steal- go to court, if you kill- go to court, if you lie- go to court etc. Just slap some paint over the "God one" and leave the rest!

Parklane,
"The froot loops are running the asylums, er, ah, I mean schools."
Well, maybe if we didn't have people like Pat Robertson's and Jerry Falwell's constant bombardment of the christian right trying to penetrate the schools, we would be discussing this.
EAG,
"Liberals are unAmerican." Really, why?
linda,
"Most don't because of the cost and that's why the ACLU wins so many"
Well linda, has it ever occurred that the ACLU has made it's case in the courtroom quite successfully when they are challenged? Also, you make the ACLU sound like some group of ultra liberal hysterical nutcases. But this organization has been protecting the rights of EVERYONE for 84 years. They even protect YOUR rights as a woman in many areas.
