Bush Downplays Thompson's Terror Worries

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush played down on Saturday a stark warning from his resigning health chief that the nation's food supply is largely unprotected from terror attack.
Bush said that the government is doing what it can to safeguard the public from threats, but much work remains.
"We're a large country, with all kinds of avenues where somebody could inflict harm," said Bush, asked about the issue after an Oval Office meeting with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. "We've made a lot of progress in protecting our country, and there's more work to be done, and this administration is committed to doing it."
Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said in a speech Friday announcing his coming departure from the Bush Cabinet that he worries "every single night" about a possible terror attack on the food supply.
Despite dramatic increases in inspections of food imports, only "a very minute amount" of food is tested at ports and airports, Thompson said.
"For the life of me, I cannot understand why the terrorists have not attacked our food supply because it is so easy to do," Thompson said. "We are importing a lot of food from the Middle East, and it would be easy to tamper with that."
Asked to respond to Thompson's comments, Bush neither criticized them nor implied that the food supply is safer than Thompson asserted.

Congress has failed to approve country of origin labels for meat. How will they ever identify all food and drugs imported from the mid-east?
"The US Congress has finally decided to delay country-of-origin labels on beef until autumn 2006, despite arguments that the labels would reassure consumers during the current mad cow disease crisis."

Helen one thing people won't do is pay for it... beef is expensive now... until we as a people decide that 4ozs of beef is ok, then we can add the cost of better labeling...
That goes for other foods also, we as people love those $5.00 all you can eats...

I think Thompson's remark was just a Bush gaffe; he made the mistake of telling the truth. Or it could be a last ditch effort to alarm and warn the American people of a problem that nobody is paying any attention to....along with all the other vulnerable terrorists targets that nobody is paying attention to...nuclear power plants, water supply, border security etc.

What terrorists? I thought you lefties here have been saying all these 'warnings' were just made up threats to scare us. Now you're worried about what's not being dealt with? Why? When you think there is no REAL threat anyway. lol

No..we lefties were poo pooing the made up false warnings and threats of non existing WMD and terrorism from S.H. and the Iraqi people, that Bush was trying to force feed us
while the real terrorists were being ignored and not worried about and our power plants, water supplies, food etc..are still unprotected and just ripe for an attack.
We are extremely vulnerable and unprotected against another attack from Real terrorists.
