Oh Linda... we're getting a Fox News preview on our dish for a month (Linda has been raving about this channel for years and thinks Canada is communistic because we haven't obtained the rights to sell it here ). I watched a bit of it last night and from what I saw, it seems to be a religious right based station. Is that true? There was a guy (perhaps a minister) talking about how the tsunami was a sign from God showing us all how angry he is at us, while the others nodded in agreement. Then there was a segment with Bill O'Reilly in it and people were telling him how unbiased he was against gays while he sat there sucking it up like Barney Fife. Is it like this all the time or was this just a bad night? Does anyone else watch this channel?

Krafty - I watch it from time to time - I find it damn funny. Want to get some good laughs and test your self control... check out Hannity and Colmes. Everytime I listen to that idiot I want to throw things at the TV (you'll know which one I am referring to within the first two minutes).
Brit Hume cracks me up too. I keep watching because I know that someday his head is just going to explode. I get a kick out of his barely concealed contempt for anything that does not fall into his narrow view of life. He is as anal as Katie Curic is banal.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?
It's a VERY biased station. Not worth wasting you time on, IMO.

KD - Happy New Year
we're getting a Fox News preview on our dish for a month
I was under the impression that the preview was only a sports station....not the full network news or O'Reilly's program. Glad to hear differently.
(Linda has been raving about this channel for years
Raving?? Supporting it as one of the only networks that didn't shove the liberal point of view down our throats....gave us the 'other' side too. That's why so many have flocked to Fox News...and why their ratings have gone up so high.
and thinks Canada is communistic
Glad you posted a laughting face when you state something I never said. I did say, and show proof, that the Canadian government decides what Canadians are allowed to view.
because we haven't obtained the rights to sell it here). - Again, because you're government wouldn't approve it. Must not have a conservative, more well rounded station to form opinions of all those socialists.
I watched a bit of it last night and from what I saw, it seems to be a religious right based station. Is that true?
LOL....No, not at all.
Then there was a segment with Bill O'Reilly in it...
Bill O'Reilly's ratings in the cable news networks was 1st out of the 10. Your Larry King was 11th. Ratings for the established news networks have continually fallen while Fox News has continually risen. I read that the network stations have experienced a 1/3 tumble in their ratings....and some even more viewer loss.
And I just know there are conservatives in Canada....and they will enjoy hearing another point of view on the current news of the day.
Being Number 1 in cable news has upset a lot of people who would prefer there be NO news network that doesn't fall in line with liberal points of views. tsk tsk.

Linda, Happy New Year to you too!!
It's just a preview, but it's the real deal Linda - 24 hours of news shows. I agree that it does show the other side of political thinking, so I'm thinking of subscribing for that reason. I need to know what makes the right tick (no luck so far) so this might be a good choice for me. (Don't worry Fenix & Cheryl, I'll remove anything breakable in the livingroom before I subscribe. )
Linda, again the Cdn. government doesn't decide what we're allowed to watch. The CRTC is there to insure that we aren't inundated with American channels and that we keep 40 - 50% of our programming Canadian content. If someone wants HBO they can get a US dish even though we have a channel that shows 50% of what's on HBO.
You have a point about Larry King. Although I love the range of guests he has on, he's getting to the point where he should retire or just do sports columns, imo. Maybe they'll get Nancy Grace to replace him.

Good for you, KD. I used to think that was why I came here to read and post....to learn how the 'left' came to the conclusions they did. But so far I've only had my opinions re-inforced about why too many in the democratic party are too liberal in their thinking. So I've gone more the 'other' way.
I need to know what makes the right tick (no luck so far) so this might be a good choice for me.

We'll never agree on this one KD. The conservative Canadian websites that I've read see it differently since much of the U.S. left leaning media IS allowed by your government to be broadcast, while conservative news is scarce and fought against by the liberals in your country. Give it all to the people....let them decide for themselves is my belief. Government shouldn't be regulating only one side being heard, imo.
If someone wants HBO they can get a US dish even though we have a channel that shows 50% of what's on HBO. I understand that. I was speaking and referring to your government owned and regulated stations.

On King: Maybe they'll get Nancy Grace to replace him. I seriously doubt that any conservative would get a permanent position on that channel....especially someone like Grace. But I'll remain optomistic that enough Canadians will like at least hearing O'Reilly, Hume, Thomas, Barnes, etc....that maybe they'll see they're not from the 'religious right' but just more conservative in their world views. Well....I can dream, can't I.

Do you think the right and left will EVER understand each other Linda?
You're not alone with your thinking about government regulation with out tv and radio, but it's not the way you think it is. They don't regulate the channels (it's up to the U.S. channels whether they want to sell to Canada or not), they regulate the content to insure Canadian tv and radio is protected from the U.S. Any country would do the same to protect their own industry. If the only shows you could get were Canadian content, your govenment would step in too. It has nothing to do with "sides" of the political arena.
I'll keep watching Fox and tell you what I think in a few days. I'll try to be unbiased.

KD - Well...O'Reilly's been complaining for a very long time that they've wanted their newwork to be broadcast in Canada...but Canada was having none of it.
So in their case it's not because Fox wasn't trying to get in.

I think many on the left and the right already do understand one another. How I see it is when we discuss the 'far' left and the 'far' right vs the more 'centralist' positions. Then we see the 'clashes of the worlds'. They are just too far apart.
I noticed during our debates here that there were some from both parties that agreed with some of the positions of the other side. I think of those people being the more moderates of both parties....not the extremists of either party.
To me it's like how so many on the left would have like to have seen McCain take the dem 'offer' to be kerry's VP. Why would that be when he's a Republican? Because he, like Zell Miller, makes decision on the issues...and what's best for those they represent...not always taking only their 'party' position. That's why the left tries to present themselves as less liberal, more moderate during campaigns as the Republicans do in the reverse....each trying to appeal more to the center of our country's voters.

It's funny how we each see things. I see republicans wanting to control and conform society into a certain mold based on traditions. I see liberals wanting society to have more freedoms and encouraging independent thinkers. I don't see how the 2 sides will ever meet in the long run. Maybe watching Fox will help me out.
