If so, would you mind sharing your experience with me....how you felt...did your rib cage hurt at all? Anything you can share with me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I had it when I was two. Sorry but I don't remember how I felt, just that I was in the hospital (based on what my parents told me).

Linda, I just did a quick goodgle search on pneumonia symptoms but I've never had it myself. Do you think you have it?

KD - No, I know I have it. Went to the doctors yesterday and x-rays show I do. X-ray of ribs showed no hairline cracks like the doc first suspected. But I'm experiencing excruciating rib pain on one side and unless I remain still I am in trouble. The pain medication the doc put me on [Lortab - 500M, along with an antibiotics, just isn't working. I took two this morning as I could barely get in an upright position.

Called the doc's office this morning and they don't "do" pain killer prescriptions on weekends. Recommended I go to the emergency room. Would like to avoid that, if at all possible and was just wondering if others had extreme rib pain when they had pneumonia. Would like to know if this is normal with pneumonia or unusual.

Thanks for the link....didn't think about reading about the symptons online DUH!!

Here's another link to the types of pneumonia, Linda. From what I've read so far, it doesn't sound like you should have that much pain. (??)

Thanks classic for sharing your own experience with me. I appreciate it.

KD - Yep, haven't been able to find anything about rib pain at all in connection with pneumonia. Your url did mention some experience chest pain...but it sounded more to me like the kind that made them think they were having a heart attack. Mine's not like that at all.

Guess I'm off to the emergency room. Seems such a waste of time and money when I just need a stronger pain med. But I've decided I don't want to go through two more days this way...so...I'm off.

Thanks for your concern and help, KD. It's appreciated too.

I don't think it is rib pain but pain in your lungs when inhaling when deep breathing. I can't remember what you call it though. Short breaths will give you less pain, but big breaths (please note I said breaths) will help heal your pneumonia faster. Lots of rest, plenty of fluids. I don't know where you live but around here when we have warmer weather then colder weather breeds pneumonia. That is what is happening now. Christmas was rather warm, well warm in our sense of the word. 40, then it would go to 0 and back up again. It was like a yo yo and that is hard on the body.

I had walking pneumonia the first year of my x-ray training, I was tired all the time, slept the hours I didnot work. It wasn't contageous so they let me work, but that is the only time I was up and about the rest of the time I was in bed.

Good Luck and get well soon.....

Linda

I have pneumonia all the time. Almost every time I get sick it goes into pneumonia.

I have never had rib pain before. I'm not saying that it's not possible, just that I have never had it. My ribs always get sore from all the coughing but I wouldn't call it excruciating pain.

I think you should go to the emergency room.

You might ask your doctor about Pleurisy. I had it once as a side effect of pneumonia. Hurts like all get out...I've had broken ribs that didn't hurt as much. It's an irritation of the pleura, the bag that surrounds the lungs and rib cage. Pain killers don't do much for it either.

Linda

I had pneumonia two years ago and was too subborn to go to the docs. That is, until I actually heard a rib crack from the coughing! By then I was just about over it. The coughing was horrid. I thought at times I'd never stop. The chest hurt, the ribs hurt. In fact, everything hurt! When I finally made it to the emergency room, I was doubled over in pain from the rib. The doc checked my heart and heard a slight murmer. He thinks it may have been caused by the pneumonia.

If you are having pain in your ribs, get into the emergency room. You could very well have cracked one. You can crack a rib from coughing!! Also, if you cannot sit in an upright position without a lot of pain, you could have a punctured lung. I had one of those, too. It was caused by an air bubble that was sitting on my lungs after a bout of bronchitis. It burst and popped the lung. You just can't get into an upright sitting position. The only way you feel no pain is if you are hunched over.

Whatever it may be, get to the emergency room. Let us know what you find out!

Linda, let us know how you are. I've had pneumonia a couple times, the last time, they put me on a ventilator?? for an hour right in my drs office, sent me home with the 5 day 'kick a**' antibiotics.
I can relate to coughing so hard that you could crack a rib, I never have but I could see that.
Let us know! Hope things are better today for you!

Thanks to all of you who shared your own experience. I just didn't think rib pain was caused by pneumonia, but since the x-ray tech and the doc said there wasn't even a hairline crack showing on the x-ray...I thought maybe I was just being a big baby about the whole thing.

Went to the ER...and yep, it's a fractured rib. Couldn't miss it...how the radiologist and the first doctor did is mind boggling to me. That's why I felt a popping or snapping in my side...it's the bone ends rubbing together.

So...they gave me a stronger pain medication and will see what my regular doc says tomorrow...[well today] after he reads the report from ER.

Thanks again.

Linda - Sorry to hear about your ribs. i have had two cracked ribs and two broken (that time I punctured a lung too). It's one of those very painfully things that you just cannot do a damn thing about which just makes it frustrating as well as painful.

Hope they gave you something good.

Thanks fenix - They gave me Mepergan...is that good? Don't know the mgs as he gave me samples until I could get the prescription filled tomorrow. Told me if I needed more pain relief between the 4 hour wait from the mepergan tabs... to take the Lortab[500mg] in between. The Lortab on their own...even taking 1000mg didn't dull the pain. OUCH!.

I know..can't do much about the healing process but the stretchable rib band, on tight, does give me a little relief when getting up and sitting down. Anything's better than the way it was. Even in the ER the two morphine shots the doc gave me didn't stop the pain...just made me sleepy.

Not sure on your meds. When I broke mine the idiot Dr. gave sent me home from the hospital with a prescription for Tylenal 3. No big deal except for that little notation on my wristband and in my records about my codeine allergy. A friend picked up the prescription for me and I took the meds without paying any attention and spent the next four hours vomiting. I'm sure you can imagine how much pain that one caused. Couldn't get a new script for 4 days since said idiot Dr went on vacation the day I was released so by the time I got a new one for Darvon I was used to the day pain and just used it to get some sleep which was badly needed since I sleep on the same side I broke the ribs.

Good luck finding a comfortable position for sleep! In my case I used Theraflu the first few nights to help at least make me drousy enough to doze.

OMG.. Linda...I am so sorry to hear of your pain! I am astonished that one can cough so hard as to break or fracture a rib!! I can only imagine how uncomfortable and painful this must be for you. Prayers for a speedy recovery. Maggie

Linda, wow! Good thing you did go to ER!
I've broken bones before, but never ribs, I could only imagine!

I looked up the med they gave you, I always look up the meds that my dr prescribes me (ok, I'm paranoid )
at rxlist.com

Your drug Mepergan :

Generic Name: Meperidine & Promethazine (me-PER-i-deen) & (proe-METH-a-zeen)

Drug Class: Analgesic Narcotics

Hope your feeling better with these, boy, I think I'd be a little peeved at my dr, if he couldn't see a cracked rib (but thats me!)

Speaking of docs who don't know their you know what from a hole in the ground. For those of you who don't know, my 24 year old daugher found a lump in her breast on Christmas morning. Today she went in for an ultra-sound and a mammogram. Well, the results are in: "I can feel the lump, but I can't see it on the ultra-sound or the mammogram. It's probably nothing." Huh? Say what? You CAN FEEL THE LUMP, but are sure it's nothing because you can't see it? If you can feel it, it's NOT "nothing". Good Lord. No wonder so many women die from breast cancer. Of course, I told my daughter she is not to take that answer. She will be demanding a CAT Scan among other things. This doctor needs a reality check and quickly.

I also had a doc prescribe a med I'm allergic to. However, I caught the mistake before I took it. I cannot take Demerol and that's what was prescribed. My daughter is allergic to Penicillin and I can't tell you how many times it's been prescribed to her. No wonder there are so many lawsuits flying around.

something has to be done to the mom and pop practice of a doctor.
Most are so burnt out from overwork and stress ,worse they dont have anyone checking to see what they are doing.
Their staff just carry out the orders, how many nurses or file clerks review their boss's work??
Sometimes the pharmacist catches the mistake.
