Putting aside President Bush for a moment, where/what do you think should happen next in Iraq?

I think we should hold the elections as scheduled, but at the same time make and publish a strict timeline for complete withdrawl of troops from Iraq... one that will not change or be delayed... set in stone. This way we will leave when we say and not when the isurgents want...

But that needs to happen... also with a stern warning that invasion will not happen again, but utter and complete anhilation will...

Regardless of how well or badly the elections over there go, the government is still extremely weak. And why shouldn't they be weak, when the leaders are assassinated every third week.

Whoever wins the eletion probably won't live long anyway, And that's WITH thousands of American troops over there keeping things as safe as they can. The government wouldn't last a week if we pulled out.

It could be several years before things stabilize over there enough for us to leave. Then again, look at the rest of the middle east... things may NEVER stabilize.

Nothing wrong with having a timeline.... whether it be weeks, months or years... but stick to it and let the people know that we are not their only security and need to help themselves also.

In my adult life, things have never been stable in the Middle East. Wars have been going on since the beginning of time there. I don't believe they ever will be a true democracy, regardless how many troops are there.

If the insurgents want us to leave, why can't they play nice until we do? We would pull out faster and they would be left.

I do agree that we need a timeline. The average American needs to have something to go on. And the Iraqis need to get their house in order for when we do leave.

Twig-In my life nothing has been stable and I think that is most in every adult life. WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and now Iraq. Look how long Palestine and Israel have been going at it. There will never be peace as we want it to be.

When you have countries with different rules and values nobody wants to cooperate with anyone else makes for disaster. With all the help we are sending to Indonesia they are objecting. I feel nobody wants peace but turmoil.

I also think they need to go on with the elections, and as I think I heard last week the Iraqi troops are doing much better so maybe then the rest of the foreign troops can pull out. I sure hope so.

I wish peace and happiness throughout the world but I will not see it in my life time. I sure hope my daughter does.

Great thread Twelvepole......

Before you have a timeline, you need a well thought out plan. Which is something this administration failed to do from the beginning.

I say pull out now, let the Iraqi people kill each other and then go back later which special forces to pick off whoever is left one by one.

On second thought, why don't we just "stay the course" and leave Rumsfeld in charge. Everything is working great with that philosphy.

We have a car bombing or two everyday. Now the greatest news is seeing which Iraqi official is the next to get killed. With only half of the people being able to vote in Iraq, I am sure there will be revolt because they feel their vote did not count.

It is to bad Iraq is not off the cost of the Phillipines. The tsunami would have taken care of all the "insurgents" and this war would have been just about over.

I am sure it will get worse before it gets any better.
