dumb question, but everytime my daughter comes back, or goes in to see her OB, she said a couple times; he DID induce labor, or he's going to

Today, they went, he said she is dilated to 4, and that on Thursday he will decide on to either give her a drug? (I forgot the name, Matt her husband, told me) or do a C Section, because the baby is so large now

Man, I think I need to take birthing for Dummies! I had 2 children, and one weighed 9.6 pounds the other 7.5 pounds, and don't remember all this stuff! They did want to do a C section on the 9 pounder, but at the last minute, she came right out!

I am not sure she is repeating exactly what the dr has said, and if she is, this dr is driving ME NUTS

Anyone know the drug or chemical they give for actually INDUCING labor? This whole ordeal is making me tired!

Near, I had my labor induced , it was fast and furious.. (total 5 hours) via a pitocin drip.

Using the drug Pitocin. Pitocin is a synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin, which your body naturally produces during labor. Your practitioner may give you this drug through an IV pump to start or augment your contractions. She can adjust the amount you need according to how your labor progresses. Some women say that Pitocin causes more intense contractions, but if this is your first baby, you won't know the difference

Thank you Maggie! I think the drug sounded like that

I'm just sitting here, everytime lately that she has gone to the OB, she said he induced labor, well what he did was stretch the cervix, obviously, that didn't do it.
I guess to get the whole story, I would have to go with her, and hear what he says, but Matt insists on going, and has gone since the very beginning.

I do think this bambino NEEDS to come out, she is sooooo big, that even the largest of large maternity clothes do not fit, and she is so uncomfortable. I know the dr sees this, and telling them today that the baby is well over 8 pounds, wow, I think its more, but we'll see. And the baby has dropped. He keeps saying (what she tells me) that the head is there, well DAYUM if he keeps saying that, the head is going to be out, and waiting for the rest! ACK LOL!

Thanks for the info on inducing labor!

Near.. why in god's name hasn't he induced labor yet? She is past her due date, isn't she? And if the baby is in position.. I can't understand why he is putting it off..
I am astonished at the percentage of Caesarean births these days.. in the old days they were used in emergency situations only.. now a day... mothers can opt for a c-section..

I really feel for your daughter.. she will be exhausted when this is all over and will need your help, so get some rest now Grandma, you'll be on call soon enough..

I don't why.. here I thought he did induce, when I posted the other thread

I mean, she is so big in the abdomen, that the XL maternity shirt is NOT covering her stomach!

And this from one of the 'best hospitals' in King county

She's going to be exhausted I'm sure, and yes I'll help, but her husband gets a 'baby leave' which will REALLY help.

going to rest now! thanks!

All 3 of mine were induced.
#1-8 hours 5.0 lbs, No epi, just demerol

#2-5 hours 9lb 8oz ( thank God for the epidural)

#3 12.5 hours 8 lbs 10oz The anesthesiologist dragged his ass and never got there, I thought I was going to die.

I think you are right Maggie, with my first, I had no idea what to expect and I was determined to stay "in control". By the third, I just wanted it over with and I am scared to ask how I acted...

I'm with you about the c-sections. I think they are done far too often for whatever reason.

My daughter was 8 lbs 9 oz and 22" long. It took 8 hours, but it seemed much longer. Considering I'm 5'5" and weigh all of 105 lbs, she seemed very, very big!

My son was easy. 7lbs, 20" long and a whopping 3 hours labor if you can even call it that. Seems he just popped right on out.

Jenny struggles with her weight while Michael is slim. I wonder if birth weight had anything to do with that?

You know Near, if you remain concerned you might consider giving her doctor a call. I'm sure he won't mind hearing from a concerned parent. Probably won't say too much, but at least he'd be aware of your concern and might explain his 'methods' of waiting and why he's choosing to do so. Won't hurt to try.

Two of my girlfriends daughters were induced...with the drip in their IV because they were way past their due dates. And one of the doctors even broke her membrane/sac and once the amniotic fluid came out that started the labor REAL quick.

But being dilated to a 4...humm....some aren't even that far and are experiencing labor pains by that time. Is she having any back pains? Reason I ask is that another girlfriend, [herself-not her daughter], NEVER had labor pains....and then delivered. The doctor told her that her back pains WAS her labor pains and that some women don't have abdominal pain. We still laugh about that...cause she kept complaining about her back hurting so...and everyone just passed it off as typical 9+month aches and pains and ignored her.

I was only joking Classic. I would never sell her those naked pictures of you & Twelve. Besides, it wouldn't be fair to the baby if that was the first thing it saw - I realize that now.

Linda, I may just do that.

She does have back pain, but she had back pain and was seeing a chiropracter before she was pregnant, so maybe she is used to this? probably.

Cheryl, you sound like me. My first was 9.6 pounds, and I gained a total of 139 pounds in my 9th month. And I'm 5'7" and THEN my weight after pregnancy dropped to 110. I didn't have any maternity clothes, I wore their fathers jeans and shirts.. I was told I carried the baby in my back not sure if that is true, but that is what my ex MIL told me. Same was true with my younger daughter. I had back pain when I went into labor, and it continued, so this is what she is probably having also.

I don't like the idea of C section, but I just might call that dr. Though she would kill me if she found out! She surely has grown up in these past months, I have noticed a huge difference in her attitude toward everything.

Oh, and I do think she is going to have a hard time shedding weight, she TOWERED over me before, at almost 5'10! But she was never fat, but I think she is going to have some problems after

Oh! about baby weight versus what they are today.. my oldest who weighed over 9 pounds at birth, was a 'chubby' child and she is very VERY short! but she lost weight in high school and has kept it off, she is 5'2" and weighs about 120, where as the younger weighed 7.5 pounds is really tall at almost 5'10 she weighed before pregnancy, 135 pounds. She had to have gotten her height from her father, he is over 6 feet tall.
