If you were president of the US what would you do, how would you handle the job?
Myself, I know deep down I could never do this job, I have to much of a temper to be able to order death....
But I think I would first of all
Tell Iraq you now have 3 years to get your security forces in place and trained, until that time double the ground troops and summarily excute any and all insurgents found.
Appoint John Kerry as ambassador to Iraq...
I would tell Iran and North Korea you have one year to disband any nuclear arms building capabilities or the consequences will be grave...
I would also tell any and all countries that if any future attacks ever fall on US soil, any country found harboring the terrorists will see the full arsenal wrath.. yes that includes nukes...
All foreign aid would stop, even that to Israel
Tell the UN to find a new home, we are not going to be a member...
Here at home, I would investigate insurance companies and how and why premiums are paid out and why the expense...
I would look at Social Security and look at the best way of privatize it...
Would look into healthcare support for those working... no work, no healthcare... even min wage jobs would be included...
I would try to do away with min wage, if the employees will set the wage they are willing to work for.
I would close the borders, north and south, as best as possible. Any employer found using illegals would immediately be fined 1 million dollars.
All illegals found will not be deported back to their country of origin, they will be tattooed and microchipped, then sent back... if found here again illegally... executed...
I would take the US out of NAFTA...
I would stop all the unecessary screening at airports for internal flights...
I would tell the states gay marriage is their domain, handle it as you wish.

Not bad, twelve. Honestly? I'm surprised at some of what you'd do, but not totally surprised at other things.
Executing illegals? Don't agree with that. Helping to make life more livable in their country of origin would be a better solution. We could have been helping Mexico improve their quality of life instead of being in Iraq. If things are great there, why would they want to come here?
I also don't agree with privatizing SS. That's a disaster waiting to happen. If you look closely at the plan, it will be the government appointing investors for you. You won't be able to go to your local investment banker. Doesn't work that way. It will work sort of like a 401k and we all know what has become of most of those. The solution is to stop "borrowing" money from the fund.
Minimum wage is a necessity, I'm afraid. You have too many companies out there still willing to exploit their workers. WalMart comes immediately to mind - the cockroach of the retail world as someone once put it.
I wholeheartedly agree with getting out of NAFTA. It was a good idea that went terribly wrong.
I think in order to tell other countries you cannot possess nuclear weapons, we have to begin here at home. It's hypocritical to tell others they cannot have what we clearly have here. Until the entire world is rid of them, no one will be safe. What's to keep a disgruntled American from using ours? Are the safeguards really fail proof?
The world is a community and we have to act as a part of that community. It's not any fun standing alone. My philosophy, right or wrong, is live and let live. I know that there are countries where the people live in deplorable conditions, where they are dictated to every day on what they can and cannot do. However, once upon a time there was a country that was dictated to by the United Kingdom. A bunch of rag tag men banded together and fought to free this country on their own. It was difficult and it looked like the effort was going to fail. Then along came a country called France (you remember them? Everyone is always saying nasty things about them?) that helped finally free this country from the tyranny. We became a free nation because we fought to be free on our own. It's the only way to truly appreciate what being free means. You cannot force freedom or the ideals that come along with it. It has to be earned to be appreciated.

They just tried to increase the minimal wage in Wisconsin but decided against it because if you think about it it would be like the snowball effect. Up minimum wage, up product price, let employees go and then less product sold, company goes out of business. It is just one viscious circle.
About the high cost of hospital prices I agree somewhat but remember those hospital workers deserve a wage also. Nurses were so underpaid about 5 years ago and believe me they really work. According to the law you can't have a hospital without nurses. It is the same for all professional people. You can't run an x-ray department without x-ray techs. To run an emergency room costs quite a bit because they have to have enough employees to cover it even if they are not busy. It's a now win situation.
Now I would tackle SS. The concept is old and needs to be revamped. I have posted a couple of articles under the Social Security Thread about Bush's plan. I honestly don't think there is enough people working to keep SS going. I honestly think there is a major problem but it didn't start with this administration. It start awhile ago and now with the baby boomers coming it is really going to get tough. Both administration know there is a problem and instead of fighting about it they need to get together and fix it. But we know that that won't happen.
Give Medicaid back to the states and get rid of the Federal Government employees. Left the states decide who gets medicaid and who doesn't. I can honestly tell you the medicaid insurance is really a great policy and they have no out of pocket expenses so the state has to get tough and make sure the ones that are on it deserve it.
In Wisconsin they are fighting about Power Plants. I understand the environment people as it does polute but it also gives out cheaper electricity. There has to be common ground.
Well that's enough I can tackle in my 4 years. It will be tough but with cooperation some ideas should work.

Question 12, who will pick your fruit? Who will plant and pick your cabbage? That's to menial a job for the us workers, how to you think it will get done OR will the growers just go out of business as they get just minimum for their product and can't afford the higher wage.
The US-Canadian borders are getting very strict. They have closed some of the small ones and in the larger ones have the high tech finger print system. There is not much else they can do. Terriorists like robbers they will figure out a way to get in. The US-Mexican border is different. The only way to keep out the illegal aliens is to build a wall like the great wall of china. Will that keep them out? I doubt it.

Thats an extremely loaded question, 12pole.
But the first thing I'd do is hire some extraordinarily talented and experienced people. Then, I'd take off for the golf course and relax that it all under control. :P)

Bush already tried that and we were attacked on 9/11. You would not be President Bush by chance now, would you?
I am surprised you just didn't say you would outsource all of your Presidential responsibilities to companies in Africa or Asia. LOL

well logansdad, I was trying to be tongue in cheek, but actually isnt that how its supposed to work? the hegher up the food chain you go, the less you really have to do? Is thius not the HIGHEST office in the land? You delegate, you lead, you build loyality, and t hen you kick back and thank god how fortunate you are to be you. Unless of course you have a complusive obsessive control freak personality where the only one who ever does anything right is yourself, , then you get to do it all and take every step of the blame. lol! The way I proposed it, the only blame your liable for is being a bad leader and judge of character if your underlings fail you.

I would put a cap on what doctors could charge and what could be charged for medicine. Any doctor doing test every week just to get paid would be cut-off from receiving money from Medicare or Medicaid. All doctors having patients going to them everyday or several times a week just to get paid would be cut off. Old farts receiving body transplants when they are dying anyway would be denied. Most doctors just want money, and they could care less about their patients. I only go to a doctor if I'm on my last legs.

So you'd like to put an age limit on who receives transplants. So at what age do people become ineligible for life saving procedures? When an elderly person has a heart attack I guess no measures should be taken to save their life because, hey, they're dying anyway.
Most doctors just want money, and they could care less about their patients.
Most huh? Yeah, you're probably right. When our pediatrician opened up his office at 3:00 a.m. to see our boys who had high fevers, he was probably only concerned about the $20 co-pay. When the OB who delivered our twins five years ago calls every six months or so to ask about the boys, he probably thinks he can squeeze some cash out of us. Of course, he lives in California and we live in New york, but thats no matter. Then there are the doctors and nurses who volunteer at clinics and shelters helping the homeless and less fortunate. Again, there is probably a money angle they're all working.
Yep, color me convinced. Most doctors are in it for the money and nothing else. <rolls eyes>

Taiwan would become the 51st state.
Iraq would become a giant ghost town, salt the earth.
All foreign holdings in the U.S. would be nationalized.
All illegal immigrants would be shipped to Viet Nam. Drop 'em in the jungle.
OBL would be caught, stuffed, and put on display at the Smithsonian; as a display of sub-human.
South Korea would over-run North Korea.
The AIDS colonies would be run along the same lines as leper colonies.
Liberalism would be recognized as a disease of youth, and an indication of immaturity and a failure to thrive.
It would be illegal for women to drive.
Anyone desiring to change their skin color would receive a government grant for a full body tattoo, except for the palm of the hands and the bottom of the feet.
Any company with a white person as an owner would receive preferential treatment in the federal contract process.
Any government allowing trade with Cuba would be denied trade rights in the U.S.

MAH645 Tell a Physician you are going to cap their wages and see how many quit. Do you realize that many physicians go to school 12 years. Some go more. Heart transplant physicians probably go 20 years. Now try and cap that salary and you will see many leave the field. Remember most are on 24 hour call.
As long as we are tackling pay what about the lawyers that sue for tremendous amounts and take a third of that. Shouldn't we cap them also.
Physicians do not get paid because they order tests. Where ever did you get that idea. They order tests to find out what is wrong with you. I am sure your physician doesn't want to see you either with your attitude. Maybe we should just kill everyone over 50 then there wouldn't be any problems.
Another thing they have raised the malpractice insurance so high that the physician cannot afford it because of the lawyers that sue. There is a physician in Mississippi that was just featured on TV. Probably one of the last that made house calls but they raised his insurance so high he went out of business. Now think about the patients that will not receive his services. The only physician in the area. Many of his patients have no car. Many are very poor. He said even though he has never been sued he cannot afford to practice and take a risk.
Lets talk about NAFTA - Whose plan was that? Not the Presidents...can't blame him for that one....

::So you'd like to put an age limit on who receives transplants.::
I would. There comes a time when you have done the deed and it's time to cash out. Living to 90 is nice but it is no more a right than owning a Lexus is. Is the choice is between extending the life of a 70 year old and extending the life of the 30 year old, call me calous, but I say we extend the 30 year olds. The doc were talking a few months ago about doing heart surgery on my 90something step grandmother. WHY for gads sake? Forget that she is an evil old coot, she's 90 years old and that type of invasive surgery is hard on a healthy person to come back from, much less someone of her age. You have to wonder how much of these types of decisions are made based on a good long look at the patients insurance as opposed to good old fashioned common sense.
As for what I would be if I were president? Drive Twelve crazy of course ; )

Good question! I still can't figure that one out logically.
"Oh yeah, we would get our oil from home... screw the environmentalists..."
So what states would be willing to sponsor refineries? The poorest ones? The U.S. can't drill, pump and refine for even a fraction of the going price for oil. If Americans would be willing to pay $8.00 to $10.00+ a gallon, it might work.

They have said it will happen...as it is beginning to in some other countries...the left who support the taking of life before it's born....would someday do the same at the other end of life...take the life of our elders when they felt they no longer produced and needed care or judged they were just 'too old'.
I couldn't disagree more fenix. No one should have the right to decide for anyone, any age, when they are ready to die - if they choose life. And I can see that a person 90 years old has lived most of their years out....but it's still their 'right-to-life' to choose surgery that might give them more years.

Ok, hello Calous.
Actually though, I didn't realize were were talking about a situation where both couldn't have their lives extended. And are you talking about transplants only or other life saving measures?
Everyone is entitled to their opinion here but I'm not comfortable with throwing age limits up as a deciding factor for quality of life. To do so starts to resemble "Logans Run" (if anyone remember that movie).

I do agree with fenix on this, if you are 70 years old and someone younger needs the transplant and it is a choice between the two... the older one does not get the transplant.

I guess for me what I oppose the most is when there are hundreds waiting on a list for [say] a heart. And rather than give it to the one whose most in need of it...they decide that [again, say] Mickey Mantel deserves it more. NO Way!! The one who will die the soonest is the one who should get it...not based on age...but rather medical need only.
Otherwise I feel doctors, people and families start playing God. Not their place.
edited to clarify - BECAUSE...no one can say that the younger receiptant would live longer than the elderly person...if they had received the transplant. No one.
