While doing a search I came across this article. I will have to retract some of my statements about her as you will see in the article. The article crowfarm posted was a negative side of this article and had us convinced that she was objecting (Mary Mornin). Well read it and you will see the good side to Mary Mornin.
President discusses Social Security plan

OMAHA - Mary Mornin works three jobs to support herself and a grown, mentally challenged son. The 57-year-old Omaha native says after years of paying into Social Security, she wants reassurance that she'll receive full benefits from the government program for her retirement, but doesn't want the future of Social Security jeopardized for her children.
She got that reassurance Friday from President Bush, who pushed his Social Security reform proposal before about 10,600 people in Omaha's Qwest Center.
Mornin was one of several Omaha-area residents invited to take the stage with Bush to tell their stories.
"I like his plan," she said after Bush's speech. "He's just so personable. He really put me at ease."
Bush was in Nebraska on Friday to push to his plan to make private accounts part of Social Security.
Bush has said his goal is to see the government retirement program more resemble the changing times, in which many Americans save for their own futures in 401(k) accounts and other vehicles rather than depend on their employers or the government.
Another Nebraskan speaking on behalf of Bush's proposal was Rose Davis, a professor at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, who said her mother died at age 67 - two years after she started collecting Social Security benefits.
Davis said her mother was ill and dependent on her family before she died. But after she died, family members who had cared for her were not able to access the Social Security benefits their mother had accrued during her many years of working.
Under Bush's personal retirement plan, money Americans pay into the system during their working years would be available to surviving family members.
"That's why I'm in so much support of this plan because ... once a person expires, their Social Security benefits will go to their family and their money won't be out there floating somewhere as a number," Davis said.
George Davis, a lifelong Republican not related to Rose Davis and political science professor at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, said Bush's plan is far better than letting Social Security decline.
"Don't just wring your hands and wipe your brow if you know the system's broken," Davis said.
Under the current system, said Davis, who is black, blacks are cheated because they are more likely than whites to die before receiving their fair share of retirement benefits.
Not everyone listening to the speech supported Bush's plan. One protester who managed to make it into the Qwest Center began yelling and calling Bush a liar as he talked. He was promptly escorted from the building.
Nebraska was one of many stops on Bush's nationwide tour on Social Security reform. After his appearance here, Bush was to hold similar sales pitches in Arkansas and Florida, following stops Thursday in North Dakota and Montana.
Omaha resident Llana Smith, 56, who attended Friday's speech, said she supports the president's plan as she prepares to retire from her job as an administrative assistant for United Parcel Service. While Bush's plan wouldn't affect Smith's retirement, she said she is concerned that Democrats aren't trying to work anything out with the president.
A group of about 200 protesters gathered outside the Qwest Center to oppose Bush's plan for Social Security.
One opponent accused the Bush administration of not trying to save Social Security but of trying to find a new investment vehicle for Wall Street.
"What they want to do is reinvest that money into Wall Street and gamble it away," said Herman Eilers, a Democrat from Wessington Springs, S.D.
Friday's visit to Nebraska marks Bush's sixth trip to the state since he took office in 2001. His last came during the 2001 College World Series in Omaha, where he threw out the first pitch.

I disagree with this. If Bush wants to do this, then those that have exhausted their benefits should not receive any more money. Otherwise we will be in the same situtaion we are now, where more money is being paid out then taken in.
If a person dies and did not use up all that they have paid into the system it should go back into the pool for those that have exhausted all their benefits. Social security is not a retirement plan for future family memmbers.

It is also not a life insurance policy. Surviving family members should not be entitled to the money.

Often a typical misjudgement, Libra. I think sometimes the reason they don't post their 'links' to the statements being made...is it's just an opinion or it's from the Onion. Getting the 'full' story is often different that the way they present it to us.

And you notice that the two responses are from lefties...who are against 'choice'. Just give your money to the government....they'll know how to better spend it that you ever could. [not]

Well Linda, how do you think Social security will remain solvent under Bush's proposal if you keep passing down "unspent benefits" to future family members while still paying benefits to those that have used up all their benefits in their personal retirement accounts?
The money has to come from somehwere or do your prefer just telling those that have no money left in their retirement accounts "Sorry you are on your own". I hope your children don't fall into the later category.

logansdad - You really can't grasp the concept of 'self reliance' can you?
People need to know the choice they make today will affect their life at some point down the road. If they choose not to save for retirement...then maybe they're just going to have to keep working until they die. If they run out of funds before they die...then they're going to have to depend on someone else to take them in. It was their choice.

Wrong Linda. Unlike some people here I am not relying on social security to pay me a dime. I have been planning for my retirement for years and will continue to make sure I have enough saved so I can enjoy my retirement.
Why can't you simply answer the question I have asked four times already:
If these personal retirement plans run out of money, will the governement provide them with benefits like the current social security plan does?

lala says,"The article crowfarm posted was a negative side of this article and had us convinced that she was objecting (Mary Mornin). Well read it and you will see the good side to Mary Mornin.""
Lalaladodeedodeedo.....
WHERE in my post in the other thread did I portray this woman as objecting ?
NO WHERE!
So I had you "convinced" ? NO, you must've convinced yourself(or else you're awflly easy to convince.).....what post were YOU reading?
But at least you finally learned that convince isn't spelled "convenience"
Did I present the bad side of Mary Mornin.......NO! I presented NO side of Mary Mornin.

logansdad - This is exactly why I laugh at you everytime you accuse me of not answering your questions. I have. Maybe because you don't like them...and then ask another question, somehow in YOUR MIND that equates that 'I didn't answer'.
Why can't you simply answer the question I have asked four times already:
If these personal retirement plans run out of money, will the governement provide them with benefits like the current social security plan does?
Again....asked AND ANSWERED....more than one on this thread alone.
But I do notice you STILL haven't answered my question about why you are so against people have a CHOICE.

No you posted a story that didn't tell the true story of Mary Mornin.
Go back and read your negative article and see the difference between the two. Here the article you posted had us believing that she had 3 children. Nothing about adult children. Next she worked 3 jobs, that was right. You gave us a negative story about Mary Mornin which in the article I posted she wasn't negative at all. She was happy to know that she wouldn't lose her benefits that she worked so hard for.
You know crowfarm we can't all be as perfect as you. You are the epitome of perfection both in yours posts and in your writing skills. Are you sure you are not Ann Coulter in disguise, and I mean that in more than one way. If you don't like the way I spell or don't like the way I post put me on ignore. Your like a mother beating her kids everytime they do something wrong. Does it make you feel good.
posted on February 18, 2005 04:28:04 PM newBut I do notice you STILL haven't answered my question about why you are so against people have a CHOICE.
I am not against people having a choice. People can invest in their own personal retirement if they want. This should be in addition what they contribute to social security.
Now that you bring up the matter of choice.... Bush is willing to give people the choice of investing in personal accounts....what happens if they chose not to invest in the personal accounts but choose to remain in the current system. I guess the government will continue to pay them the benefits even if they have not fully contributed to the plan or exhausted all the benefits they paid into it. So If they choose to do this option the system will be no different than it is now.
Again....asked AND ANSWERED....more than one on this thread alone
No Linda you have not answered the question. You only think you have by side-stepping the question with your own comments like the following:
And you notice that the two responses are from lefties...who are against 'choice'. Just give your money to the government....they'll know how to better spend it that you ever could
or
You really can't grasp the concept of 'self reliance' can you?
because I really do not believe this is your answer to my original question:
If they run out of funds before they die...then they're going to have to depend on someone else to take them in.
If that is really your true feelings, I hope that you are financially well off and have some one to take care of you in your old age. But then again arent you the one that got to collect your social security early because your husband die?
