Generally, on the DVD player, red and white are right and left stereo sound, while the yellow is for video.
Since your TV only has two plugs, that's obviously not going to work. Even if your TV doesn't accept stereo (hence only one sound input) just plugging in the white and yellow cabls SHOULD work (although you'll only be getting half the sound).
Since you aren't getting anything at all from it, either those two plugs on the TV aren't what you think they are or maybe you have to switch "inputs" through your remote. My TV has plugs all over the back and I can select my "source" through the remote. Check your remote and see if you have an INPUT button somewhere.
Can you pull out the TV and see if the two plugs are labeled? Knowing for sure what those are would make things a lot simpler.
It wouldn't surprise me a bit to find those two plugs are for stereo OUTPUT to external speakers and not an input at all.

It's good to see you Maggie! How's your home? Do you have electricity? Do you have a lot to clean up? What about your family and neighbours? (This isn't a lie-detector test, btw.)

Maggie, it does make a difference with the built in VCR, you probably need to be on the "Line" channel (very first one, blue screen) and then play the DVD.

Just hook the white and yellow to the ones on the right and then put the channel on the "Line" and you should be ok.
Just seen the picture of the DVD, just match the white and yellow connectors.

So good to hear you're home. I'm sorry to hear about the damage to your home, though. However, as you noted, it could have been much worse for you. I understand all about roof damage! This past winter was so severe it did a number on ours. The 45-60 mph winds that came through here due to Rita and other hurricanes finished the job. We finally found a contractor and for a mere $5,000 we'll have a new roof. The problem is that it's a very large old house with a very steep roof! We managed to get the money together and now it's just a matter of time before work begins. Next will be gutters and windows. Ugh! Home ownership is not cheap!
Now is your opportunity to design your own porch!! I'd settle for nothing less than a wrap around with plenty of space for hanging out on warm summer nights!
