There seems to be a thread missing about how to find stuff on Vendio. What happened?

It's a sad state of affairs when a thread is removed because a link to Google Advanced Search was posted.

If one goes to the google homepage there is a link there called advanced search.

No great secret, no secret at all. If vendio wishes to insure the confidentiality of the BBS they only need to put a nobots tag on whatever page they don't want indexed.

Anyone who does not wish their words, thoughts etc. accessible need only refrain from posting to these threads.

I can't imagine why an educational thread would get taken down. After years of using the goog and it's many products, somehow I missed the advanced search altogether.

When Roadsmith requested that I delete my entire comment she also said that she had requested removal of the entire thread because of my response.

I want to point out that I had not provided a method of searching a Vendio users personal search history for information, services and products as was the case in the news article that she used to begin the thread. My link was simply to demonstrate that a Google record of users comments on non-private chat boards such as this one is easily available and usually covers a period of about two years.

I simply posted a link to the Google search with a brief description of how to fill in the blanks. I believe that Roadsmith's request was an overreaction on her part probably based on misunderstanding.

The surprising aspect is that a topic so trivial without personal insult or animosity was removed before an effort could be made to resolve the problem. She called me a stubborn cuss because I refused to remove my comment but I've heard much worse than that.

This is an excerpt from the article on CNET about AOL releasing search log data.

Week in review: The seedier side of search

AOL suffered a black eye this week thanks to its search business, but it also gave us an eyeful of surfers' bizarre search habits.

AOL apologized for releasing search log data on subscribers that had been intended for use with the company's newly launched research site. The randomly selected data, which focused on 658,000 subscribers and posted 10 days ago, was among the tools made available for use on AOL Research. The Internet giant has since removed the search logs from public view.

"This was a screw-up, and we're angry and upset about it. It was an innocent enough attempt to reach out to the academic community with new research tools, but it was obviously not appropriately vetted, and if it had been, it would have been stopped in an instant," AOL, a unit of Time Warner, said in a statement.

Although AOL had used identification numbers rather than names or user IDs when listing the search logs, that did not quell concerns of privacy advocates, who said that anyone among the 658,000 could easily be identified based on the searches each individual conducted.

The 21 million search queries also have exposed innumerable life stories, ranging from the mundane to the illicit and bizarre.

Meanwhile, Google users should have faith that their Web searches won't end up being public information like they have at AOL, according to Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

"We have systems in place that won't allow it to happen," Schmidt told reporters Wednesday after a keynote discussion at the Search Engine Strategies conference here. However, during the keynote discussion, Schmidt had hedged a bit, saying, "We are reasonably satisfied...that this kind of thing could not happen at Google," before adding, "Never say never."

From the CNET article:

Q: Do any search engines not store records of what their users do?

Yes. Ixquick.com, a start-up funded by Holland Ventures of Amsterdam, pledges to do precisely that.

The Netherlands-based company proudly says it doesn't keep records of its users' Internet addresses. In other words, it does save search terms, but the company says it's unable to link them to any person, unique ID number or Internet address.

"I'm a firm believer in the privacy cause," Ixquick.com CEO Robert Beens said in a recent interview with CNET News.com. "I can imagine a lot of people are keen on their privacy."

Beens said that "we delete the (Internet protocol) address of users. We have a program running which opens the log files and deletes the user IP addresses and overwrites them." And, Beens said, the company removed the unique ID from Ixquick.com's cookies.

Helen: My favorite quote from Maya Angelou: When people show you who they are, believe them.

I made a simple request: please delete your message. I've seen this happen many times on Vendio message boards, and the person has always complied.

What you did was to go into your post, change my user name to yours, then slyly include my user name in your message so it would still be clear to anyone that the information was mine.

You really were being stubborn, Helen! You just didn't want anyone telling you what to do. It was a matter of common courtesy, something frequently lacking on the Roundtable, and you wouldn't comply.

Dr. Phil would say, "How much fun do you think you are to live with?"

Well, Roadsmith, I suppose I was wrong in giving you the benefit of the doubt by trying to excuse your behavior as the result of a misunderstanding. I know exactly what was said in that thread and if necessary I will quote my message again because I doubt that my message had any bearing on the removal of the thread. There was absolutely no reason other than your strange objection to justify removing the thread.

You asked me to delete my entire post which was simply a link to Google Advanced Search with directions on how to fill in the blank. I saw no reason to delete my entire post so as a concession I agreed to exchange my name for your name.
By changing the name in the blank, the search result could be anyone's information. I can't believe that you are so ignorant of search features available on the internet.

A brief excerpt from the thread without mention of the Google Advanced Search.

Roadsmith said, "Thanks for the info, Helen, but *please* go in and erase your message. I sure don't want weirdos searching for my stuff.

Helen said, That's just silly, roadsmith. Do you want me to erase the link to google Advanced Search?

Roadsmith said, Helen, you and I tend to agree on politics, and we've never tangled over anything. I'm asking you as politely as I can to erase your entire message. I've also asked the moderator to delete the entire thread.

Helen said, I will substitute your name with my name if that will make you feel better. I'm really surprised that you are shocked to learn that whatever you write here is available to anyone with a computer.

Roadsmith said, Okay, Helen, now you've shown me (for the first time here) what a stubborn cuss you can be. As Stephen Colbert would say, "You're on notice."

Then I explained why I would not remove my post.

Helen said, If I had removed my entire post as you requested it would appear that I had posted something seriously offensive rather than the fact that I had simply posted a link to a Google search that is available and known to most anybody who searches for information on the internet.

My intention was just to offer some helpful information. If I had known before I posted that trivial comment that you would object I would have, in deference to you, ignored this thread.

There is no privacy on internet chat boards...not even so called "private" ones. Eventually the information leaks.

I suspect that since the thread was being watched because of your complaint that the thread was removed because of a remark from another poster. If you remember, you made the request to remove the thread Saturday and it wasn't removed until Sunday.

In addition, I want to point out that my link was directly to Google Advanced Search and not to the results of a search for your name or my name as you implied.

In view of your insulting remarks, I don't feel obligated to cater to your neurotic request.
This is the complete message to which you objected. I don't believe that it is the reason that the thread was removed.

Following the response from Profe who made the observation..."Google does it too, unless you've specifically told them not to or use their site thru a proxy. I can't imagine anyone being shocked about this."

Google Advanced Search

Right. If you use advanced google and type "Helenjw" in the blank..."with all the words" and then type vendio.com in the domain field and in the dropdown menu select 100 you will get about 800 results. That goes back a couple of years.

I don't know why Profe and I have fewer results than you, Roadsmith.

Edited at the request of Roadsmith to replace her name with mine.

That very simple message is no reason to remove a thread and furthermore, I don't believe that Vendio would remove a thread based on that innocuous remark which was intended to be instructive.
