prof - The numbers do indeed look very good for the democrats. It's just too bad that it took so long for some to see the light. Still, we do have those that will never see the light. They like living in the dark (not meant as an insult to anyone on this board). I was watching a Ted Strickland / Ken Blackwell debate at Strickland headquarters here and all I heard from Blackwell was a bunch of name calling. The funniest thing I heard was Strickland commenting that he's run out of paper for all the names he's been called by Ken Blackwell. LOL! I guess Blackwell thinks that will get votes from the people in Ohio. Blackwell is way down in the polls. Strickland is leading by anywhere from 17 to 22 points depending upon the poll!
This could very well be the democrat's year. They need to stay focused.

They need to do more than stay focused cheryl, they need to start getting real messages about their positions out to the public. They need to take some real firm stands on the issues that people are most concerned about and they need to get the word out to people that they have actually taken those stands. I have NO confidence that the Dems are going to make any kind of significant showing now or in 08 only on the basis of backlash vote. In the end, I expect a whole lot of people to vote from FEAR, like they did last time. Bush will manage to put the picture of himself and his cronies standing up for America banging sticks together to keep away the bad guys while the Dems twiddle and bleat about stuff and that picture, however slimy and untrue it is, will sway a significant number of votes.

Democrats will drain 'swamp,' Pelosi says
Congress - The House minority leader promises honest and open lawmaking in the capital
Friday, October 13, 2006
EDWARD WALSH
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Thursday that a Democratic majority would run the U.S. House in a much different manner than the Republicans have for the past 12 years, promising to adopt rules to foster "civility and bipartisanship" in political debates.
Pelosi, who is in line to become the first woman speaker of the House in U.S. history if her party wins a majority of House seats in the Nov. 7 elections, said Democrats are determined to "drain the swamp that is in Washington, D.C.
"We are pledging to restore the most honest and open Congress, instead of having the most closed and corrupt Congress, and to break the link between lobbyists and legislation," she said.
Pelosi appeared at the Multicultural Senior Center in Southeast Portland with the four Democrats in Oregon's five-member House delegation: Reps. Earl Blumenauer, Peter DeFazio, Darlene Hooley and David Wu. She also appeared at fundraising events for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Hooley, the only one of the four Democrats facing a well-funded GOP opponent.
Pelosi said House Democrats have adopted a six-part agenda of initiatives that they will undertake in the first 100 hours of the next Congress if they are the majority. The measures include an increase in the federal minimum wage, tax breaks for college tuition and giving the federal government authority to negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs for Medicare recipients.
Republicans have been invoking the specter of "Speaker Pelosi" to rally the GOP's conservative base in House races around the country. But Pelosi, whose district includes most of San Francisco, has studiously avoided suggesting that a Democratic House majority would take radical steps.
When a man in the audience suggested that the first thing that House Democrats should do is impeach President Bush, Pelosi quickly dismissed the suggestion.
"We don't have time for that," she said. "We're about the future, and we're going forward."
Asked whether House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., should resign in the wake of the scandal involving former Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., and sexually explicit electronic messages to a male former congressional page, Pelosi said she has called for a thorough investigation, including questioning under oath of the House Republican leadership.
"It's very important to establish the facts and then decide what to do," she said.
HEY AMERICA GET OUT AND VOTE AND YOU WILL BE PART OF A NEW DIRECTION AND START TAKING YOUR COUNTRY BACK.

While I still don't believe/support the idea that the democrats will be able to take the majority in the Senate....they may well take the House, I don't know. But I sure don't see them taking control of the Senate.
But maybe even that would be a good thing. Have Speaker Pelosi be in charge/control for the next two years....THAT alone will convince voters that we don't want a democratic president in '08. LOL
Besides IF they do as they've promised, raise our taxes, it's guaranteed they'll lose again in '08.
And the President still will retain power of VETO....and I hope if that does occur....he uses it like no president before has ever done.

Britain Army Chief Calls for Iraq Troop Pullout
By TARIQ PANJA, AP
LONDON (Oct. 13) - Britain's new army chief called for a withdrawal of British troops from Iraq, warning that the military's presence there only exacerbates security problems, according to an interview published Thursday.
Gen. Richard Dannatt described British Prime Minister Tony Blair's Iraq policies as "naive," declaring that while Iraqis might have welcomed coalition forces following the ouster of Saddam Hussein, the good will has since evaporated after years of violence.
The British military should "get ourselves out sometime soon because our presence exacerbates the security problems," Dannatt said in an interview with the Daily Mail released on the tabloid's Web site. "Whatever consent we may have had in the first place" from the Iraqi people "has largely turned to intolerance," he was quoted as saying.

My wife and I have talked face to face with hundreds if not thousands of people about(R)Sen.Prick Santorum from Pennsylvania.
We copied and handed out articles about how Prick Santorum is number 1 and number 2 for lobbyist money from oil companies, pharmaceutical and insurance companies.
Prick Santorum has received millions from big business and has voted in their favor.
We also showed how Prick Santorum charged Pittsburgh people with a $55,000 bill to send his kids to private Virginia schools until it became public.
We also showed how Prick Santorum received a 5 Million dollar "PRIVATE LOAN" from a PRIVATE BANK. A bank that is not open to the public a bank where you and I would not be allowed to join.

Ahh... the neocon swine has spoken.
"Yep....cutting our deficit down by 1/2 half with two plus years to go is JUST TERRIBLE. NOT."
Which imaginary deficit do you refer to?
"Giving citizens the medicare drug bill that only HELPS the seniors.....oh that's terrible too. NOT."
Yeah, the Republicans stiffed Seniors and the American taxpayer on the medicare drug bill. 1) The Republicans made sure that the Feds couldn't negotiate the prices on medications. 2) They created the most confusing, poorly regulated system to date. 3) If a Senior signs up for a plan that has specific drugs in the plan, and the company who manufacturers the drug decides they no longer wish to be part of the plan, the Senior gets screwed. They can't get their medication, and they can't change their plan. What a frickin' joke! Absolutely nothing but a joke, and to think Linda actually boasts about such a plan.
"Having a GREAT economy after 9-11, a recession and two wars....yep...that's just SO terrible. NOT."
What great economy? Perhaps for the upper 1% of Americans is this economy so great. Ask the middle class American worker if this is such a great economy? How much more money do they make now, than when Bush took office vs. the cost of fuel increases, medical costs, etc. Ask those people who have lost their jobs and still look, no longer can afford health insurance, etc. Yeah, such a great economy. Linduh, the typical neocon swine rolling in her own feces.
"Having the unemployment rate be so low....is even MORE terrible. LOL"
Again, Republican deception in numbers. Linduh fails to explain the fact that unemployment masks the real numbers of people who are still looking for jobs and have lost their unemployment, and how many people cannot find jobs paying at least the same as they were making before because those jobs are now in India.
"The stock market being so HIGH is just making everyone want to jump out of highrise windows over how much they're hurting. NOT!"
The one possible thing that cannot be denied is the fact that the stock market is doing better, however, if you factor in inflation, it still hasn't hit its high. Not only that, but most of those companies who are part of the Dow Jones have reaped the benefits of Corporate Welfare that the Republicans have given them, moved US jobs overseas, etc. So, this is a given... very much like lower interest rates during a recession.
"Plus getting all those democrats who voted TO GO TO WAR....have a lot of explaining to do since they not too long ago VOTED TO keep our troops there. Yep....maybe they'll vote out those DEMOCRATS. LOL LOL LOL
"
Who do they have explaining to do? Liberals can see the difference between good and bad legislation. We know full well how the Republicans play games with legislation, wasting taxpayer money by creating BS legislation in attempt to smear Democrats. Republican Bait and Switch is their mantra.
Take "Cut and Run". Oh, how the Republicans love using that phrase. But, let us look at the facts. This current administration had full American support when they went into Afghanistan. Every American wanted our military to anihilate the Taliban and Al Qaeda. But, just a year later, the Bushies cut an ran right out of Afghanistan, sending our troops on a pipe dream of candies and flowers into Iraq. Where did this get us? Well, you see it every single day on the news. If the Bush Administration hadn't "cut and run" from Afghanistan, and actually finished the job there we wouldn't have a Taliban insurgence again. In the meantime, more pressing was the real axis of evil, North Korea and Iran who have both advanced their Nuclear programs much further than before Bush took office. How nice... Jeopardize America's security so the Bush Aministration could waste American dollars on a war that has now lasted longer than WW2, a war based on lies, and a war that has killed tens of thousands of innocent people to remove a dictator. Boy, that sure is pretty intelligent tactics, eh? I'm sure Linduh feel much more secure knowing that Iran and N Korea will soon join the ranks of nuclear powers.

Then old foul mouthed rustygumbo tries to make it sound like our unemployment rate is just so bad. LOL LOL LOL Again, just proves the liberals haven't a CLUE.
He makes up the EXCUSE that many aren't on the lists anymore. THAT hasn't changed....it's ALWAYS been that way. ALWAYS....even under democratic leadership. There are just SOME who refuse to LOOK FOR A JOB.....so they remain unemployed. LOL Poor babies....won't even LOOK for a job. And ol' rusty wants us to feel so sorry for them that they don't have a job. LOL LOL Maybe IF they EVER get off their butts and actually TRY to find a job....they will.

Supporting FACTS from the Dept. of Labor - September:
Unemployment (Household Survey Data)
The number of unemployed persons (6.9 million) and the unemployment rate (4.6 percent) were essentially unchanged in September. Thus far in 2006, the jobless rate has ranged from 4.6 to 4.8 percent.
Over the month, the unemployment rates for most major worker groups--
adult women (4.2 percent),
teenagers (16.4 percent),
whites (4.0 percent),
blacks (9.2 percent), and
Hispanics (5.4 percent)--showed little or no change.
The jobless rate for adult men (3.8 percent) declined in September.
The unemployment rate for Asians was 2.8 percent, not seasonally adjusted. (See tables
A-1, A-2, and A-3.)
---
Total Employment and the Labor Force (Household Survey Data)
Total employment, at 144.9 million, was essentially unchanged in September. Over the month, both the employment-population ratio (63.1 percent) and the labor force participation rate (66.2 percent) held steady. Over the year, the employment-population ratio was up slightly, and the labor force participation rate was unchanged. (See table A-1.)
---
Persons Not in the Labor Force (Household Survey Data)
About 1.3 million persons (not seasonally adjusted) were marginally attached to the labor force in September, down from 1.4 million a year earlier. These individuals wanted and were available for work and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. They were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey.
Among the marginally attached, there were 325,000 discouraged workers in September, about unchanged from a year earlier. Discouraged workers were not currently looking for work specifically because they believed no jobs were available for them. The other 975,000 marginally attached had not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey for reasons such as school attendance or family responsibilities. (See table A-13.)

BELOW IS ANOTHER REASON WHY NO ONE CAN BELIEVE BUSHY AND HIS SUPPORTERS ABOUT THEIR WAR ON THE MIDDLE CLASS ECONOMY.
Soldiers Come Home-–No Job Guarantee--What's Wrong with This Picture?
Jane Flasch (Rochester, N.Y.) - Many soldiers have risked their lives serving in Iraq and Afghanistan only to return to home to find their jobs here have been filled by someone else.
Infantry Captain Rob Peterson spent almost a year in Iraq guarding convoys from insurgents near the Syrian border.
Peterson said, "You had bad guys from across the border trying to blow up convoys. That was their training before you got to Baghdad."
When his duty was over, Peterson returned home to face a different kind of pressure.
He said, "Here I am chomping at the bit to get a job. I have a wife and two children at home."
While the U.S.military does not release information about the numbers of full time men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan from Rochester, we do know the number of reservists and national guardsmen called up from the Rochester area is twice the national average.
One in five of them return home to find they no longer have a job.
John Batiste said, "Despite laws that guarantee work when soldiers and airmen return-- that's not always the case…a year is a long time…the job was taken by someone else."
Batiste is a retired general who served in Iraq. He is also the president of Klein steel.
Peterson now works for him as a distribution manager. It has been such a good match.
Batiste has become an advocate and member of the Veteran's Business Council. He said, "Our experience has been, if you can find the right vet with leadership training, it’s tremendous. They fit right and add a great deal immediately. It's a good place to look."
Spread the Word.
The unemployment rate for veterans is twice that of non veterans. The Veterans Business Council is run through The Veterans Outreach Center on South Avenue. So far it has 20 members.
Employers with job openings are asked to contact the center at (585) 546 - 1081.

Linduh, you proved my point! Your "facts" are only half of the story.
It is easy to use statistics from the Department of Labor to make your point, but the truth is that the Dept. of Labor statistics do NOT include people who were unable to find jobs after their unemployment ended. It only shows statistics for those who are eligible to receive unemployment at the current time. Once their eligibility runs out, they are no longer counted in these statistics because the federal government has no way of tracking those individuals. Anyone who has a sliver of common sense knows this, obviously common sense is something you never managed to acquire.
Of course there will always be people who are fully capable of working who choose not to. It does anger me to be panhandled by a person who is able bodied, but refuses to do anything other than ask others for a freebie. Your assumption that I want people to feel sorry for them is nothing but another one of your LIES. I can wholeheartedly agree with, " Maybe IF they EVER get off their butts and actually TRY to find a job....they will."
The problem isn't about the people who refuse to look for a job, but rather those who look for a job to no avail. Yes, there are many many people out there who's unemployment ran out, and are still very actively looking for a job. When you have such a large exodus of American jobs removed from the market and everyone is competing for the same job, one person gets it, while tens to hundreds don't. A classic example here in Portland was when I worked for a non-profit agency that was searching for a new Program Coordinator. This position typically would receive 10-20 applications, mostly from people who worked or were educated in Social Services or other non-profits. Now, because of the mass exodus of tech jobs that have been cut in Portland by companies like Intel, that same Program Coordinator job gets 50-200 applicants, most of which are over qualified, or not qualified in that field because there are no jobs in their sector. In fact, I remember one applicant had a PhD in Social Work. She applied for this job paying $25K because nothing was available. She was way over qualified for the job and didn't get it. This has been the norm here for 4+ years. The other thing that
But, if you want to compare the reality of the Bush economy vs. the reality of the Clinton economy, I think we all know the truth... most Americans were much better off when Clinton was in office.
Look at the net jobs created by each President since Ford was in office (http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/launchpad/5577/philo/employment.htm). GW has the very worst rating in just about every category he was measured in. GW, the least amount of annual jobs created, Zero months of strong growth, 36 continuous months of decline, etc. Hell, Carter did much better when it came to job growth than any of the Republicans have. To try and paint a rosy picture of the Bush economy is laughable. There is nothing rosy about it, unless you happen to be wearing rose colored glasses.

I might also mention that if you notice, Linduh completely ingored the rest of my responses to her so-called Republican accomplishments. The Republican controlled White House and Congress have done nothing but hurt the American Worker, the American Middle Class, the American Senior Citizen, and given handouts to the wealthy and corporate powers (those who need it the least). The Republicans have yet to put together a comprehensive plan that will get our troops home, and yet all the while, they snivel about Democrats who complain about the lack of accomplishments that Republicans have done.
As Linda has pointed out, she's not too worried about the elections. In fact, she claims that Democrats may win the House. That is all this country needs. Democrats in the House will ensure there WILL be accountiblity and hopefully full investigations into the corruption of the last 6 years of the Bush Administration. I can only hope for the impeachment of this President and Vice President, as their criminal activities have escaped punishment because they've been protected by the lack of accountibility that Republicans have provided them.
