If you are looking for a gift idea for the 12+ year old and they have a Nintendo DS, Brain Age is a great choice, stimulating rather than brain-numbing. Although marketed to adults to keep their minds sharp, it is equally appealing to kids. It is half the price (around $20) of other DS gsmes and it's one of the few that my son hasn't tired of after a few hours. For under-achievers, it's also a great esteem builder.
