My gas bill is always under 20 dollars but last month it was 238 so I called and they sent someone to read my meter and adjust it to 158 dollars.
It is still too high so I called and asked,they said it could be my water heater leaking water?but if it leaks water,I would know(it is in the attic with the furnace).
I have gas dryer ,gas stove and gas water heater,nothing has changed so why the big jump?
They are coming next week to check my appliances.
How do I know they are reading my meter and not my neighbor's meter?

No worries, think what you're saving on groceries what with the dollar stores and all, those 3 dollar chickens and such like. No 22 dollar cups of coffee for you. 158 bucks for gas is chicken feed.
On a more serious note: How do I know they are reading my meter and not my neighbor's meter?
You don't. You not only don't know it, there's no way in blue blazes you can prove it. Unless you can read your own meter and compare it to their figures. Here's how:

Look at your bills. Were the previous bunch "estimated"? If so, the last one could be an actual read that made up for a bunch of undercharges.

I have the bad habit of throwing away my utility bills,my bank statements as soon as I paid /reconcile them,so I dont have my prior month statement to compare .
But I have been living in this house for 5 years and the gas bill is never over 20 dollars??

I know ,cool weather has already arrived !
but going from 18 a month to 158 a month ,they are sending someone to check my appliances on Tuesday.

Well,a third gas man came today and picked up a different number,in line with the past months.
He also painted the meter,what good does it do??
