My attention-starved needy cat is always crying for more food or water. I solved the problem of his scooping out his water by partially filling a saucepan for him to drink from. I fill 2 shallow cassoulets with his dry food. His new prank is to push the cassoulets together, scooping all of the food from one into the other, and crying that he has an empty bowl.

Maybe he wants wet food in that extra dish.
If he is really smart and you don't respond, he may transfer the dry food to the water dish.

In my effort to be humorous, I hope that I haven't suceeded in ascribing a sentiment to this cat that he doesn't have. Hell, he may want fish in his dish.
I'll send another happy face his way just in case.

He drops a mouthful of food into his water dish all the time. Anything to get my attention.

He wants FRESH. Cats do not drink much water but when they do they want it fresh, which is why they are fascinated by running water. Same thing with food. My cat will jump up on the desk and put his right paw on my chest. That's the "fresh alarm". You go to the food bowl and it is not empty, but is devoid of choice bits. During mealtime the fish shapes and Xs and Ys get broken up. When it's down to the bottom with mostly these pieces, he won't eat them. You have to dump them and refill with the full size bits.

Squirrel, you're right, he wants fresh. When I fed him water from a cup, he wanted it filled 6 times a day. With the larger pan, I fill it twice a day.

My tomcat likes to take his toy mice and soak them in his water bowl and then drop them on your face when your asleep that means feed me. He also has a little power ranger that we find floating in the water dish. That means change my water.

So you think you have a problem, pixia!
"The Daily Coyote" is a blog which has become very popular about a woman who lives alone with a coyote who thinks he is a cat and like your cat can't leave his food in the bowl.
From Shreve....I've found I can't leave meat in his bowl for Charlie to eat at will - once he's eaten his fill, he'll take the remaining pieces and hide them all over the cabin - under the woodstove, behind my printer, even in the bed under the covers.
The Daily Coyote
Introduction to the story from LaTimes...
...The blog features the comments and photographs of Shreve Stockton, a 30-year-old woman living in a one-room cabin in an undisclosed "town of 300 people" in Wyoming...The focus of the blog is Charlie, a 9-month=old coyote that Stockton took in when he was orphaned shortly after birth. Feeding him goat's milk from syringes and then baby bottles (he promptly chewed the nipples off), Stockton has raised him from a tiny fluff ball that cried unless he could sleep in her bed to a long-snouted, giant-eared, 25-pound almost adult coyote that still sleeps in her bed. Oh, and her cat, Eli, sleeps there too.
Her photography is beautiful, and I enjoyed reading her blog. It will be interesting to read what happens when Charlie's country cousins start coming around looking for handouts. She may find that the cat is what's for dinner.....

...and I suppose it's possible that Charlie may someday reveal his wilder nature.
Those good photos are being seen by 30,000 people a day.

I've know of a couple of coyote/dog crosses over the years...ultimately none of them could be trusted and either ran off or had to be put down. The sad part is, I don't blame her for saving that pup, but there is no good that comes from man's interference with the course of nature and wild animals. Lets hope that little fellow stays home and continues to think he's a cat. If he takes a notion to run off and join his wild brethren he's toast. He hasn't learned any survival skills and won't last a season with the big dogs.

The situation in Nigeria is horrific.
Photographer - Pieter Hugo
"'We use a heavy stick to hit the hyenas on the head when they misbehave,' Abdullahi said. 'We knock them down on the ground. All of us hold the sticks in case the animals become aggressive."
"However, Abdullahi's daughter, six-year-old 'Mummy', played with the animals with no sign of fear. She even rode a hyena as if it were a miniature, slope-shouldered pony. 'She cannot be harmed,' said Abdullahi. 'It's the same thing with the snakes and monkeys. She has taken a potion of traditional herbs and has been bathed with it. So her safety from the animals is guaranteed for the rest of her life."
But as a Nigerian official said, 'These animals are wild. No matter how you handle them, an animal is always an animal. Tame an animal for ten years and one day it'll behave like an animal."
I have known people like that too.

Helen -
I loved your blog and pictures of Charlie. What a fantastic life you must lead, living in the wild and having such good animal friends.
Go for it, gal.

Neva-
Sometimes when I'm stuck in rush hour traffic in the Washington D.C., Maryland area I wish that I could live way out in the woods in a little cabin like that!
If I'm ever so lucky I'll give you the cat and the coyote who thinks he's a cat so that I may enjoy taking photos of my dog who is my best friend.

Neva, (niel35)
I hope you weren't confused by my response before your edits. I was just teasing about giving you the coyote and the cat.
I'm flattered that you thought that I could produce a blog as excellent as that one. But if you read a little farther up this page, you will find that I identified the blog's originator and linked it to a story in the LaTimes where I first learned about it.
Isn't it amazing how a thread about cats can become something entirely different?

Huh?
Oi! Geez! I'm still confused with the pushing together of one's "cassoulets" -- Ralphie insists that's still a misdemeanor in 5 counties in Alabama...

That sounds downright indecent and in Alabama doing such things with cassoulets is probably a felony. At least the cat had sense enough to just push his bowls around.
