My crazy cat loves to eat anything green, which is one reason why I can have few house plants. I had some washed, raw asparagus on the table, ready for cooking that I caught him nibbling the tops off of. Is asparagus safe for cats?

How interesting! You must have a fascinating cat. I've never heard that asparagus in any form (stalk or fern) is dangerous for pets, but why not google this and see?

Thanks, Roadsmith, I did search on google and got ambiguous results. I take it that it is not on the toxic list but isn't recommended. Will he have GI problems? The poor guy has suffered with his hip surgery, I would hate that leaving the asparagus out would cause him further problems. Edited to add: he ate more of the tops than I thought his stomach would hold, I had to throw the whole batch away.

As I recall, there is a gourmet cat food that has asparagus in it. I've purchased some for my cats.

I planted some wheat grass for my cats this Spring before it was warm enough for them to go outside. They really liked the stuff. I got a gazillion seeds so I will bring some for you when I come visit next month.

I find that in the summer cats (and dogs too) eat lawn grass when their tummies are upset - makes them vomit. Maybe Lion has some hairballs he wants to get rid of.

Neglus, that's something to look forward to - the wheatgrass, not the vomit.

Thanks, Bill - that makes me feel better. Early last week, Lion was enthralled by a clove of garlic that dropped on the floor. I thought it harmless but googled it anyway and was very upset to learn how toxic garlic is for cats. Luckily, he just batted it around and hadn't proceeded to the gumming stage yet.

Cats, being inherently smarter and more resourceful than even the craftiest dog, won't generally eat something that's bad for them; unlike fido, who'll eat Hershey bars till he croaks. I'd do two things:

1. Call the vet and ask. No vets here far as I know.

2. Keep an eye on him. I'll bet you already do.

I agree with prof, cats are finicky eaters and they know what they are eating.
I had a cat once and when I lived near a forest preserve,he will go out every night in the summer and come home early in the morning and perched on top of the garbage can.
When the alarm rings ,he will meow ,wanting to come inside the house.
He never seem to have any problem with his stomach until I moved back into the city and lived in a high rise condo.
He loves cooked shrimp!
They also love the raw fish used in sushi, you know they are fresh ,once I have a piece of abalone and it was a real treat for the cat.
I think if you give them some vaseline, they will vomit the fur ball?
