I was furious this morning when I saw the nonsense created by the McCain campaign instead of concentrating on real problems. Obama's reply this morning was brilliant, too bad that the news media is focusing on this instead of Obama's plan for education.

MSNBC has the video of Obama's speech this morning in which he replies to McCain's effort to use such distraction as a technique to avoid revealing his position on issues.

They are taking their game directly from the Bush playbook. It worked twice before. I'd like to think the American people are smart enough to not let it happen a third time, but I'm just not convinced it won't. Obama has begun to come on a bit stronger. He needs to come on stronger still and do it with fewer words.

I was furious too, Pixia--especially since McCain used that exact same phrase earlier this year when talking about Hillary Clinton's health care policy.
I think it is quite insulting to women that they are presenting Palin as a victim---of sexism, unfair questions, slurs. They must think it will be effective in getting votes (they may be right.) This is the big show. If she can't take it, she should not have accepted the VP candidacy.
The McCain camp complained about this non-issue on the same day they rolled out a despicable ad saying that Obama was in favor of legisation to teach kindergartners about sex before they can read. The issue was legislation to teach young children how to protect themselves from pedophiles. McCain & Co. seem to be focusing on non-issues so we won't notice they are not talking about any issues or CHANGE.
Edited to say-for those of you who think the media is liberal should read the headlines in the New York newspapers this morning.

It was appropriate and effective to address this topic in a speech focused on making education a priority in America.
The fact that so many people are so easily influenced by propaganda techniques is frightening.

Obama has it right when he calls it fake outrage.
This is the big show. If she can't take it, she should not have accepted the VP candidacy.
I agree. McCain's campaign is promoting Palin as someone who can take on the big boys and already they're rushing around acting as if they have to protect her over some silly little remark. They can't have it both ways.

I am glad to see Obama standing up to McCain. If McCain doesn't know what the line was referring to, how stupid does he think the American voter is.
McCain and Palin like to dish out the insults but don't like to take them. Kinda like some other conservatives that used to post here.
Obama has spent most of the campaign responding to likes from the McCain campaign. There is a good majority of voters who believe that he will raise taxes on the middle class when this is simply not true. It is these kind of lies that will be Obama's downfall. I am looking forward to the debates where he can confront McCain once and for all.

I am afraid we are just beginning to see Rove's smear tactics in operation. It seems McCain has sold his conscience to win this election (Remember Rove was the guy that spread the rumor that McCain's adopted Indian daughter Bridget was really a black love child in SC?).
I don't think there is a Democrat alive who can stoop as low as Rove and I doubt that Obama would allow it.

It is infuriating that the Rove tactics, repeating lies until they are believed, seem to work. I believe it is imperative that Obama stop responding directly to these attacks and let other Democrats dispel the lies and propaganda. He should stick to the message and force the McCain camp to do the same. One Democrat, forgot who, said every day that Obama is taken off message is a good day for McCain. I agree.

I think that Obama handled it very well today, especially since he was able to incorporate it into his speech focused on making education a priority. Maybe a quicker response would address the issue that you mention, Coach.
Leaving it to someone else is the mistake that John Kerry made when his stellar military record was trashed by Rove's slander machine.

I am not saying Obama should not show some outrage at the continuing lies we are hearing daily. He needs to show some feistiness (is there such a word?)We certainly don't want another Kerry fiasco. McCain is trying to run out the clock to avoid issues and I would hate to see Obama spending valuable campaign time addressing these lies, especially since there is at least one new one a day. He needs to talk issues and get his message out, especially to undecideds. The media is doing a good job exposing these lies.
We all probably know by now that McCain has used the lipstick on a pig thing several times himself, at least once about Hillary Clinton's Health plan. A former aide to McCain and Donald Rumsfeld, Torie Clarke, has a book out called "Lipstick on a Pig: Winning in the No-Spin Era. How ironic.

Unfortunately, the media serves Rove by broadcasting his propaganda over and over and for days, months and years, emphasizing the sleaze rather than correcting it. Since media is becoming more and more politically aligned with conservative policy we can't rely on them alone to correct the sleaze directed toward Obama.
Obama's decision to correct the spin was timely and effective.

Unfortunately, media are keeping these lie-filled stories from the McCain camp in the headlines. On the other hand, each time these stories are reported, the actual facts are usually reported as well. For example: With this silly lipstick on a pig story, a video of the actual speech is shown. You can hear for yourself that Obama was talking about McCain policy. Also, while reporting on this story, the media also shows or reports the many times McCain has used the same metaphor.
Considering what happened to Kerry, I am a bit worried about Swift-Boating rearing it's ugly head again. I just cannot believe that the voters fall for these tactics. It worked before and it could work again.

Have you watched Fox news?
I understand that you are focused on the time spent on broadcasting the sleeze message while other more important issues are being ignored or more correctly deliberately ignored... but there is also the problem of a deliberate effort to present the spin message that the Rove machine produces.
Another problem with TV in particular is that watching TV is a passive activity and even if both sides of the story are presented a number of people will get the wrong message. The fact that the polls are affected is evidence of that.

Been watching Rachel Maddow as a panelist for some time. Glad she now has her own show. Love listening to her make sense of it all. Not only is she smart, but she is clever with words and funny! Matt did not succeed in talking her down and she's still crazy over this silly issue. So far, McCain has succeeded is shelving important issues while he announces a new lie every day.

I'll never forget Ann _____ in Texas, at the Democratic convention a few years ago. I think she got the quote right, speaking of something about the Repub. candidate or their platform:
"You can pick lipstick on a pig, but it's still a hog."
edited to add: I'm blanking on her last name; governor of Texas, and will come up with it sometime after my brain has completed the "search."

The polls were "affected" 2 days before this incident. It would seem the "No woman would vote for Palin" was massively wrong.
Funny you should mention MSNBC following your Fox news whine. In the local paper was a story about NBC "having a problem" with MSNBC. It seems they are so blatantly biased in reporting that NBC had to yank some of the personnel. This was after Palin did the ABC interview.
Michael Moore was one of the architects of the Palin's daughter's baby is Palin's campaign along with US magazine's "Babies, Lies and Scandal" cover which is causing thousands of sub. cancellations. Even Oprah seems to be having a "problem".
As parodied on SNL and MADTv, the fawning over Obama is hilarious. The party's over.
You all have a distinct separation from reality:
"McCain is done"
"No woman would vote for Palin"
Equally funny is "McCain and 'his handlers'", and the "words they have him say".
McCain has decades of service. Obama was created by and fronted by an influential black member of the Il Democratic machine because he looked good in a suit. Yet somehow Obama has these "brilliant ideas". LOL.
You should check the back of that suit for the slit where the hand goes in.

NBC pulled Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews from anchoring election night for fear of appearing biased. Olbermann makes no bones about his liberal support. I do not see much bias with Chris Matthews, although he is like the Tasmanian Devil. I have to laugh at the constant complaint of liberal bias in the media. MSNBC has Pat (Attila the Hun) Buchanan as a regular. Joe Scarborough, host of their morning show, is a former Repub. Congressman. They have many Republican campaign strategists and politicians as contributors. Who is more biased than Fox? When was the last time Fox changed personnel in order to not appear to be biased?

well well, what do you know...
so, de-headinthesand - you did a great job of completely ignoring the issue.
is it that you think the comment really was meant as a jab towards Palin, and you back up what those guys are trying to say, or do you have half a brain of your own and see the hypocrisy in it, given Mc4moreyears own use of this statement DIRECTLY aimed at Hillary - not to mention the other 4 times he used that statement over the past few years?
I know I know... "what? LOOK OVER THERE< SOMETHING IS WRONG OVER THERE TO!!!"
you can ignore real issues all you want, but eventually you'll have to stop all of this stupid bickering and look at the REAL issues the candidates are talking about and make a decision based on who you think has the better plan.
er wait, thats how this system was supposed to work. now we decide based on who is anti or pro abortion or gay, even though neither would ever have the balls to actually enact a single law changing those stances in america.
What was the last president, from either side, where their stance on either of those issues made ANY difference at all in their term? - yet we basically make the candidates a black and white choice based on their thoughts and feelings on those issues, and not on the issues that they will actually be dealing with on a regular basis.
Hopefully for the repubicliceicans they can keep this ball and cup junk going on long enough to fool ya'll into 4 more years of the same old crap 70% of the country is sick of.... (yet apparently 30% of those that are sick of it still want more, masochists I suppose.)
I mean really, how many days has this stupid pig with lipstick discussion going to go on? (im not referring to Palin, shes pretty cute despite not having a clue what a VP does just a few months ago)

Thanks Helen and Profe. Not only is Obama leading in electoral votes as Profe showed, he is ahead slightly in Ohio, and we all know how important Ohio is. It is even in Virginia, which has not voted Democratic since 1964. The election is not over yet, Squirrel. It is going to be a hard road, especially since so many voters buy the smears and lies spewed by McCain campaign central.
