A study released today to the AHA showed that the cholesterol-reducing drug Crestor lowered the mortality rate of middle-aged test subjects by 20%! The test subjects were all healthy, had no known heart disease, had low cholesterol levels, but had elevated levels of a protein that has been linked to heart disease. Might also be a good time to invest in AstraZeneca's stock. Read the Reuter's article here:

My broker's degree is in Pharmacy and his wife is the head of medical writing (prepares the presentations for drug approvals for the FDA) for a huge company. If you read it in the newspapers:

1) It is very, very old news.
or
2) It's bs.

The study was first presented today and was well backed-up. Squirrel, did you even bother to click on the link? Your credentials are squat - no, make that snot! Edited to add: or wait until the news hits the Discovery channel, since your source of information emanates from popular TV shows you attribute to the Scientific American.

This was on GMA this morning. Turns out that while the percentages were high the actual NUMBER of people showing benefit was on a couple of hundred. There are side effects. So while the study is interesting, I wouldn't bet the farm on it just yet.

Perhaps your broker is holding out on you Squirrel!

Yesterday one of our news outlets made note that the trial study was funded by the company marketing the drug so I'm always a bit wary of the results then.

It is on a slightly different topic, but if you want to read about how the pharmaceutical industry distorts the science surrounding health, read Fat Politics by J. Eric Oliver.

BTW, I don't think that Pharma is the devil, but there is just too much money involved to expect many to act honorably.

Yeah, never trust what you read on Reuters.

Nope, it needs to come from Scientific American by way of the discovery channel. Or NewsMax, or WorldNet.

When is the last time you heard somebody say "my broker"?

In Joe-I-wish-I-were-a-plumber-speak Squirrel's pharmacy friend ranks zero.

"When is the last time you heard somebody say "my broker"?"

My friends never mention their broker.

I was casually acquainted with a broker though. We kept our boat tied to his backyard pier about ten years ago. At that time he wouldn't offer financial advice to anyone with less than 1.2 mil to invest. Except, that is, on one occasion when he told me how to save thirty five cents. He advised me that instead of mailing his slip fee, I could just drop the check in his mail slot and by doing so save thirty five cents a month!

He had other frugal habits and some ostentacious and costly ones too...a very interesting character.
