Guess the words were too big for him to remember for more than 2 seconds.

Oh bear -wrong again! It was Bush Appointee Chief Justice Roberts who flubbed - FYI Obama voted against the appointment.

WASHINGTON — Chief Justice John Roberts swore in Barack Obama as president of the United States on Tuesday with a slight stumble over the wording of the oath of office, a stumble Obama repeated.

Separated by a Bible used by Abraham Lincoln at his first inaugural, Roberts asked Obama: "Are you prepared to take the oath, Senator?"

The former Illinois senator indicated he was, and Roberts started reciting — and Obama repeating — the 35-word oath that is prescribed by the Constitution.

But at one point, Obama paused abruptly after Roberts reversed several words in the oath.

The oath includes the phrase "that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States" but Roberts didn't say "faithfully" until after saying "president of the United States."

Obama apparently realized that something was out of order.

Roberts then repeated the phrase correctly, putting "faithfully" in the right place after execute: "faithfully the office of president of the United States."

But Obama instead repeated Roberts' original, incorrect version: "... the office of president of the United States faithfully."

Later, as they shook hands before a lunch in the Capitol, Roberts chatted briefly with Obama and appeared to say that the mistake was his fault, not Obama's.

Bear, Bear, Bear---It took you this long to come up with a criticism of Obama and this is the best you can do? Even you must realize how silly it is to slam someone for mis-speaking who is well known as a wordsmith--a master of speech. So childish!

Hey Bear, here's one you can forward back to the morons who forwarded you the news that Obama flubbed the oath.

He was swearing on a copy of the KORAN

Bear and others who didn't get the memo-- the era for non-productive political pettiness is over. The country has to pull together and tackle some big jobs. If you're not willing to help, then get out of the way.

He won't get out of the way pixia, he'll continue to read and post without any critical thought at all the silly crap his "friends" forward him. It's our job to call him out and ridicule his vile spew. It'll be fun. Cheap and easy thrills...can't really call it "sport", as sport indicates a worthy adversary.

As part of the coverage I watched yesterday, one of the stations interviewed Lucie B Johnson about what it was like to be a kid in the White House. I can't see how whatever she would say as a White House teen would apply today but she did shed some light on her father. She talked about attending the signing of the Civil Rights bill and asking her father why he gave the pen (I think it was the pen) to Everett Dirkson and not to any of the great Civil Rights leaders who attended. LBJ said "Why Lucie, all those other folks were in favor of the bill from the beginning. It would not have passed had it not been for people who opposed it coming on board. It would not have passed without Everett Dirkson"

I get the feeling that Obama recognizes the importance of winning over the opposition in order to get things done and I think he is the guy who can do it. I look forward to a government that works for the people!

Send in the usual clowns:

From http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2009/01/20/obama_oath/index.html

Fox News: We're unpresidented!

On Fox News, Chris Wallace just speculated that President Obama might still legally be regular ol' Barack Obama, because his botched oath doesn't count.

Wallace was referring to the one slip in today's otherwise flawless ceremonies, which came at the most important moment: Chief Justice John Roberts said and President Obama repeated back to him: "I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear that I will execute the office of President of the United States faithfully." The oath's actual line (which is in the Constitution) goes, "I [Barack Hussein Obama] do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States."

Over on Fox, Wallace predicted this will go to the courts. Though, presumably, if it makes it to the Supreme Court, John Roberts will rule that he administered a legitimate oath. (Besides, the mistake was Roberts' fault anyway, not that any of this is actually the least bit significant.)

Though I'd ordinarily guess that even this is too silly to take off on the paranoid far-right, these days, who can be sure? As a friend of mine joked, "Maybe the real reason he botched the oath is that he rehearsed it in Arabic."

Hey, it turns out I flubbed my marriage vows (saying "to hold and have" rather than the correct order). I'M NOT MARRIED! No need for lawyers and alimony and all that stuff. Thank you Bear.

BTW, I'm just kidding, I still adore my wife and she puts up with me.

True Story Cash! My husband (Swiss German is first language) said : "To love her cherries" instead of "to love and to cherish". We didn't have time for a rehearsal. My father married us and he arrived late the day before the ceremony. I guess we should have practiced the vows!!! The whole church cracked up!

You droans can't admit anything can you? Obama screwed up the first line all by himself. No help needed.

Yes, after that Roberts goofed and Obama didn't correct it. Even after days and days of practice.

So to say that Obama didn't goof up, you are 100% wrong. Great post Bear!!!

Whatever or whomever caused this flub, we are saying WHO CARES? This is a non-issue in the scheme of things. With all our serious problems, why is Bear making a BFD out of this? 'Cause that's all he's got.

P.S. Being such a staunch supporter of Mangler Bush, Bear should have the sense to stay away from this subject.

Neglus,

Having parents for whom English was a distant 3rd language, I really had to laugh out loud.

Sometimes they're priceless. My father used to send me a few bugs when I was in college and running short on funds.

Bear & Stone,

Making believe GW Bush wasn't our President didn't work for me, as much as I couldn't stand the thought.
Get over it. There's work to do.

Stone - Roberts screwed up THREE times:
1) he was SUPPOSED to pause after he said "I Barrack Obama"...
2) He mixed up where "faithfully" was supposed to occur
3) He said the "Office TO the President of the United States " (should be "of".

Here is a You Tube of George W taking the Oath in 2005 and you can hear the pause taken my Renquist after the name. The Oath appears about 1/3 of the way in to the video.

Obama tried to handle it as gracefully as he could, I think. He also probably tried to decide if was valid as presented by Roberts or if it should be resaid.

Roberts caused the whole thing stonecold. Watching it again there is simply no other explanation. You're as wrong as bear, and as stated above, it doesn't really matter. If necessary, he can be re-sworn by any judge. Two other presidents in our history have done it.

In spite of the "facts" that:

He won't wear a flag pin
He's a Muslim, or as that frazzle haired racist old hag at the McCain speech said "an Arab"
He wasn't born in Hawaii and isn't a citizen
He didn't say his oath exactly right.

He's the President. Build yourself a bridge and get over it.

By the way, what's "droan"?

The part of the OP I forgot to respond to was "Guess the words were too big for him to remember for more than 2 seconds."

Yeah, I guess they don't use big words much at Columbia University and Harvard. Obama graduated Harvard Law School Magna Cum Laude and was President of the Harvard Law Review.

You must be a bitter man. Was it part of your upbringing to think that a man of color can't remember big words for more than 2 seconds? Good old Bush would make up big words when he couldn't remember one; would you feel more comfortable with Obama if he spoke less well?

Did Vendio really do that? Did the post use Bin Laden's first name instead of "Obama"? I got so used to ignoring the junior-high name calling that I missed it!
