Salt Lake Tribune, 2/8/2009

Just hours after former Sen. Tom Daschle dropped his bid to become the next Health and Human Services Secretary, Utah Sen. Bob Bennett called it all but "inevitable."
>>
>> Daschle had to pay $140,000 in back taxes and interest for not properly reporting a chauffeured car provided to him by a prominent Democratic donor.
>>
>> "He could not possibly have functioned effectively with this cloud over him," Bennett proclaimed in a lively chat with reporters. "That is more than most Americans make in a year."
>>
>> Good thing no president ever tried to nominate Bennett to a Cabinet post, because he has had his own problems with back taxes.
>>
>> In late 2005, Bennett and some business partners paid back about $320,000 in back property taxes that had accumulated over four years for their Anniversary Inns business, and that's in addition to $140,000 in tax liens for late sales and tourism room taxes.
>>
>> For the record, that's about three times "more than most Americans make in a year."

It's really too bad about Daschle. Gotcha politics. He was the perfect person for the job.

I agree, Prof. It really is a shame. What's even a bigger shame is that if we dig deep enough into someone's closet, a skeleton or two is bound to jump out. No one is going to be perfect and there's always going to be someone on the opposite side who will be more than willing to point those imperfections out.

I think most Americans would forgive Daschle and would be okay once he made things right. He's not the only American to not pay his taxes!

Bennett is the perfect example of a pot calling a kettle black.

It has to make you wonder how many more politicians out there have unpaid taxes. The IRS should be going after these guys.
