Hi, all: Was anyone watching Jeopardy yesterday (Friday)? We had an emergency hospital visit and I missed the last day of the finals. Can't find it in google, oddly.

Hope your emergency visit was not too serious, Roadsmith.

Patrick Tucker, a Political Science major at University of Notre Dame was the winner. One hundred thousand should pay for a couple of semesters.

Jeopardy Winner!

Thanks for the winner information, Helen. The emergency was my husband waking me up Wed. morning at 4 a.m. to say his nose was bleeding and it wouldn't stop. He was filling towels with blood, leaning over sinks and basins. I called 911; they tried to stop the bleeding but couldn't, after 15 minutes so took him by ambulance to the nearest hospital ER (20 miles away, winding highway). I followed in my car. They stopped the bleeding, finally, in ER with a plug that had all kinds of stuff in it to help. Blood pressure was 190 over 130, very very scary. They took the plug out on Friday, doctored his nose a bit, and gave him Keflex and a BP prescription. He's always had borderline BP and always had nose bleeds, but nothing like that one.

We're told it's common in older folks; our membranes thin, and, in this dry climate in our mountains, nose bleeds are common. They said he was lucky it was a vein in his nose, not in his brain, that blew.

He's been very weak but is eating well and getting his strength back gradually. He is now, believe it or not, on his first-ever prescription drugs, at 71.

The basins in our house were full of blood, and one was stopped up from the blood clots. It was messy and awful, but all's well that ends well. His BP is down to 125/70, which is fabulous.

Wow! Before the nose bleed, his blood pressure may have been even higher than 190/130!

Just a few years ago, my mother found an old country doctor in Mississippi who was still practicing the ancient Greek practice of "blood letting" to relieve hypertension. Nobody could convince her that she should get better medical advice so until she died, she and her friends were convinced that this wacky doctor's "treatment" was better than drugs.

Stop harassing him so much, Roadsmith!

This past year has been a stressful one, Helen, for both of us, although the results have been fabulous. We both worked on my husband's photo book about Idyllwild, which was published by Arcadia Publishing in April. There was a huge book-signing event here in town a couple of weeks ago, plus Barnes & Noble signings and other book stores in the area. The books are selling very well, and I'd agreed to take care of all mail orders. Well! It's precluded me from doing what I want to do on eBay and Amazon lately, but with all the proceeds of the book going to our historical society, we're very happy to see it succeed.

It's "Idyllwild and the High San Jacintos," in case anyone wants a peek. It's now on Amazon & eBay, too. Very professional book.

Our problem here, as eldest children of ministers, is that we are extremely conscientious and therefore fret over things we feel we're responsible for (and some things we aren't!). ~Adele
