Trying to get fully wireless internet access. Am being told that connecting via my cell will only allow 9600 baud! Have seen cellular modem cards (with antenna) and heard of satellite service, but with online time very limited, it is difficult to do research. Any ideas?

Hiya Zip

Yeah, I have an idea... let me (and others, if they wish) help do the research! Just tell me specifically what you're after and I'll look around.
Sound like a plan?

There was a thread a couple of days ago on the eBay Outlook about satellite service. Don't know if it helps:

Here's a link to a company that's been advertising heavily in my area. I think the cost is prohibitive, though, unless you can write it off somehow.

Thanks, guys. Would prefer something with less monthly expense. Interested in the cellular modem, but particularly service providers. Online much of the weekend. BBL

Well, along these lines, if anyone has some suggestions for international wireless internet access for me, I'd appreciate it.

I will be in Eastern Europe later this year, spending a month in an extremely rural area where standard internet access is a rarity and telephone service is quite expensive and can also be unreliable.

I was there last year (also for about a month) and had no direct internet access. (Yikes...withdrawal!) I did manage to send out two or three e-mails when I desperately needed to, and to receive a couple, through the "friend of a friend of a friend" system, but it was very rough. I don't know which was worse, being incommunicado or the attitude of the people there, who just didn't understand.

A friend there recommended a handheld (i.e. Palm) and wireless internet. I've started looking at handhelds, and also at notebooks and laptops, because I'm thinking a notebook or laptop might be more useful/practical in the long run. (I wouldn't really use a handheld around here, but a notebook or laptop would be useful.) Also, it seems as though it might be complicated to send e-mail via a handheld, although receiving e-mail doesn't seem to be a problem.

I'd only need international wireless for that month, so I'm not terribly worried about the expense, but I don't know where to get started looking.

Any thoughts on what type of device or where to obtain international wireless service?

Thanks in advance...

My son is deaf and is unable to communicate via telephone. He bought a Motorola Weblink. It's a hand held pager device using the internet.

Last night we had an emergency with my grandson. My son was able to keep me updated from the hospitol though e-mail. This little device has been such a covenience for us. It was so hard communicating with my son unless he was home online or by phone using his TDD. Now I can get him anytime anywhere and he answers right away.

He has the simple one and it does several different things. The price is $179 but had a rebate that brought it down to $99. The monthly service is $19.95. They have different models that do more and they have some international service. Just go to their web page for info. WebLinkWireless.com

Found Sierra's Aircard 300 for about $500. Monthly service $60-$75, various providers. Coverage areas limited. Satellite link not available for RVs. Dang! So, I'll have to do something justifying the expenditure.

Hi Zip, I finally cornered my husband to get some info. He works for At&T wireless and says to tell you that At&T provides wireless internet via mobile phone (called PocketNet) in many areas of the U.S. at no additional charge to a maximum of $14.99 per month - (for optional premium services) with unlimited time usage on all plans. It doesn't take away from your airtime minutes. These phones don't connect through your laptop. The price of the phone varies per market but is around $100.00.

Computer air cards data activation is available through At&T. Typical cost is approximately $50.00 a month for unlimited usage using CDPD technology similar to the Mobile Data Terminals that the police use in their cars. Using this is like using your computer at home. Speeds are about 3 times that of using a cell phone connection with your laptop.

New technology will be available the second half of 2001 that will quadruple that speed. He recommends that you contact an AT&T wireless office and ask for a local government or business account data rep to get the service. The local stores probably won't know much about it. Plus, you always get better prices, etc. by going through the business department rather than retail stores.

I have him over my shoulder giving me the info - so if it doesn't make sense it's his fault.

I'm running out the door but I'll check back in later and see if you have any questions.

Have a great day!

Cool! I had stopped by two AT&T stores and was told, No, only through the cell phone. Did check out weblink wireless. Their service appears to be messaging. Need my 'net fixes. Also looked at PocketNet, but found it too restrictive. I'll have a hard time adjusting down from the 17" monitor.

Also found cell modems cheaper at auction, naturally.

Hi Zip, You're right. I had forgotten how incredibly small the screen is on the PocketNet. Hubby had a demo I tried out for fun once... I'd get high blood pressure adjusting to that. I'm sorry the info wasn't what you needed. He's snoring on the recliner but I'll ask him tomorrow if he has any other ideas. I'll tell him he flunked.

He didn't flunk. The CDPD info is helpful. I'll probably go that way. Difficult to find info on it. They need any sales/marketing folk in CA?

Ubie, try alluding to writing implements

Hi again Zip, I'm sorry I've been away the last few days and just caught your post. I'm glad that the CDPC info helped. You can probably find more info on it at the AT&T website under the wireless division... just a guess. AT&T is always hiring - we're in Texas but it's true all over. Unfortunately, the reason that they're always hiring is because they are so disorganized that the employees get tired of it and leave for greener pastures. I think it's the one hand doesn't know what the other one is doing syndrome.

I'm curious... what could Ubie have said that was bad enough to get moderated? Writing implements is not a good hint.

He mentioned turgidity rather indelicately in an attempt to convey the extent of his excitement.
