Ok, so I'm not a big fan of hers, but I always thought she had some good ideas, and that her products were of quality.

I was wrong.

I received a new set of Martha Stewart Silverware for Christmas. (Actually, 2 sets - a setting for 8). The reason I really liked them was because they were REAL heavy and if there's anything I hate, it's flimsy silverware.

After using them for less than 2 weeks I'd like to show you what happened to them.

A few pieces (shown below) were in my sink with a wet rag on them. All that was in the sink was these few pieces of silverware, the wet rag and maybe one dish and there was a little water in the sink.

I went to wash the dishes and this is what I found:

The one on the right is shiny and the way they are supposed to look. The "silver plating" had completely corroded away and some had rust on them.

You can see how the finish came right off.

You can see how the silver plating was all chipped.

Pretty gross, huh?

When I brought them back to the store (with the person who bought them for me with her receipts) - I was told this was not the first set to be brought back like this!! They said they are having problems with the Martha Stewart Silverware. They gladly gave me my money back and I went somewhere else and bought a much higher quality set of REALsilverware.

Needless to say, I won't be buying any more of Martha Stewart's Kitchenware.

ExecutiveGirl, if I were you I'd go to Martha's web site, and where they have the clickable link where you contact them, I'd send off an e-mail including these photos along with your opinion of their quality and see what kind of response you get.

Direct your response to Martha herself and not to "Whom it may concern."

I bet you'd be surprised.

You're right, they look gross!

WOW, those are really nasty. I was on the Martha Steward email list for discounts and sales. But the prices were still way too high for items offered, so I canceled.

This women needs to stop. Doesn't she have enough money? Now she's offering inferior products. You would think everything with her name on it would be of high quality.

james: LOL... too true.....

chococake: Yes, I too thought that anything with her name on them would be of pretty good quality. Boy, was I wrong! Dead wrong. And to think I had an eye on some of her pots & pans sets...

brie: Thanks for that suggestion. I think I will have to do that.

On the package it didn't say it was "stainless steel" or what they were made of. But they had a 25 year guarantee (these didn't even last 2 weeks, let alone 25 years!!).

Can't wait to see what kind of response I get from the website....

I don't know about Martha Stewart and her Silverware but I wanted to show you the quality stuff I use...

ExecutiveGirl, just thought of something funny while imagining Martha's response.

"Ladies, we don't ever let our dirty dishes or silverware set in the sink in case company would happen to stop by. Immediately rinse the soiled silverware and neatly put them out of sight inside the dishwasher with knives and forks pointing downward."

lol

brie: True! LOL! I can picture that too, unfortunately!

Speaking of putting her silverware in the dishwasher - there is no mention on the package at all about using them in the dishwasher - and when I returned the silverware I was told one of the sets that was returned did this same thing after going through the dishwasher once.

Just the sound of her voice makes me twitch. There is a very funny book entitled "Is Martha Stewart Living?" by two guys who also appreciate her about as much as I do. And that flatware IS gross!

Man - here I thought only bachelors well aged leftovers could cause that.

Reminds me of a Loony tunes cartoon where they stir the drink and the spoon melts.

Did you read the packaging?? "Not to be used with food or food products - contact with water voids the warrantee - Use may cause drowsiness - Do not operate heavy equipment after use"

Barry: ROTFLMAO!!!! I guess I shouldn't be laughing because we use plastic cups at my house. I buy the jumbo size pack at Sam's Club and NEVER use regular glassware. Then if we eat something that isn't too hot, we break out the paper plates. We don't have a dishwasher and I hate to wash dishes so this saves me from having to do too many. Cheap? Yes. Convenient? Yes.

I don't care for Martha Stewart items myself. A lot of the stuff is overpriced because it has her name on it. You watch her show and she has all those beautiful dishes--antiques and not stuff you buy and she sells!

I've dug up flatware from the garden(don't ask me how it got there, I don't know. We rent) that looked better than that flatware.

Heck, we had better looking flatware in the Azores, where stainless steel rusts!

And if it can't sit in the sink for a day or so without corroding, then it wouldn't last around chez Cat.

That looks like electrolytic corrosion. Usually you get that if there is a dissimilar metal in the water - usually quite reactive like aluminum or magnesium. It might be down the drain even. On boats you hang a plug of metal in the water off the boat and IT corroudes saving the boat p[arts. Of course ypou have to know it is there and replace it when it is mostly eaten away. You have the same problem in plumbing. They make special coupling to attach steel water heaters to copper pipes or you have the iron eaten away quickly.

Too bad you returned it. You could have invited Martha to the house for dinner and set the table with it.

That same thing happened to my cheap ice cream scoop. Does anyone know exactly what that is where the finish changes like that?

Her name has not been associated with quality since a bizarre partnering with K-Mart.

Another problem is that the base is obviously steel. Good quality Silver plate is on a copper alloy base. It is hard to pickle steel to take a plate. Usually they flash it with copper and then plate the silver or other metal over the copper flash but I don't see that at all along the edge of the stripped area.

Maybe Executive Girl will give you that
silverware and you can hang it off the
boat instead of zinks!

Is that what it is called zinks? "It sinks without zinks" I can see the ad now.

I once had to service fire sprinkler systems at a university. There was a huge centrifugal pump to force water in the dry system when it was triggered. When we tested it one day the whole pump body shattered in a million pieces and flew all over. We were very happy nobody was hurt very bad. It had been installed wrong and the electrolytic corrosion ate all the iron away but there was so much carbon in the cast iron it was left behind and the shape was there- it just had no strength.
You could take one of the chunks and carve it with your pocket knive. It was just graphite
saturated with water. The whole thing had a thick tough paint job on it or it would have probably weeped and alerted us something was wrong.

yes...zinks...I know because my husband is
tight as a fiddle with money and he bitches
every year about zinks. The boat requires
one on each shaft and one on each rudder,
about 40 bucks worth. So when you mentioned
your boat, I knew right away what you were
talking about but I know nothing about the
science as you do...just money

Hi mcjane ~ The camera I use is a Sony Mavica FD73. I LOVE this camera! Bought it at Walmart for $498 but I hear you can now get one for $399 at other places.. has 10x zoom and this is one of those cameras that use the floppy disks - no cords to download pics.

ExecutiveGirl I'm really sold on that camera. There has been a lot said about it on other threads on AW, 99.9% good.
Do you use or need special lighting ?

mcjane: I don't use any special lighting at all. I just turn all the lights on in the room and the pics come out fine. It's a wonderful camera - I couldn't be more pleased with it!
